Chapter 113: Chapter 113: Wanting to Transfer to Coronet

Gregory Winslow’s job offered great benefits and a long New Year holiday, so he wasn’t scheduled to return to work until after the fifteenth.

On the fourth day of the New Year, he knocked on his superior’s door, gifts in hand.

Francis Aldridge looked at him in complete surprise. After welcoming him inside, he asked, "What brings you here during the New Year holiday? Is something wrong at home?"

Francis Aldridge’s wife came over to pour them tea, and her ears perked up at his question.

’I hope he hasn’t come to borrow money during the New Year.’

’That would be terribly unlucky.’

Gregory Winslow just smiled and got straight to the point. "Sir, I’d like to request a transfer."

"A transfer?" Francis Aldridge sat up straight. "Why, all of a sudden? Aren’t you doing a perfectly good job here? Where do you want to go? Are you facing some kind of trouble at home?"

Seeing that he wasn’t there to borrow money, Francis Aldridge’s wife breathed a sigh of relief. With a smile and a polite word, she excused herself to the kitchen to get busy.

Gregory Winslow didn’t hide anything. "My daughter was accepted into a school in Coronet," he said openly. "Her grades have always been excellent. If it weren’t for..."

"She was always a shoo-in. So, I was thinking I should transfer to Coronet as well. That way, it’ll be easier to look after her."

"I’ve never asked for a favor in my entire life. You once told me, Sir, that if I ever asked, you would grant me one reasonable request. I want to transfer to Coronet. That isn’t too much to ask, is it?"

When he finished, Gregory Winslow looked at Francis Aldridge with a serious expression.

Francis Aldridge sighed in resignation. "You’ve really put me in a tough spot."

"Alright, I’ll ask around for you. But you know how it is with these positions—it’s a one-in, one-out system. A spot has to open up before you can fill it. I can’t make any promises, so you should be prepared for the possibility that it might not work out."

He knew Gregory Winslow was an absolute sucker for his daughter.

Ever since Grace Winslow was born, he’d seen Gregory show her off countless times.

Francis Aldridge and Gregory Winslow had known each other for many years. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Given Gregory Winslow’s skills and seniority, he could have been transferred long ago.

If he’d wanted to, he could have been transferred to the provincial capital by now. Why else would he be holed up in a small place like Prospera Town?

But for the sake of his wife and child, he’d willingly passed up several promotions to stay in Prospera Town as a minor department head.

"Alright, thank you for your trouble. I won’t stay and interrupt your dinner. I’ll be heading off now." Having gotten a clear answer, Gregory Winslow stood up to take his leave.

Melanie Lloyd came out from the kitchen and politely invited him to stay for dinner, but Gregory Winslow declined.

Francis Aldridge saw him to the door. "I’ll do what I can to help you. Try not to stress about it too much."

Gregory Winslow nodded, thanked Francis Aldridge profusely, and then departed.

By the time he got home, Grace Winslow and Irene Lynch were already bustling about.

The whole house was filled with the rich aroma of cooking.

The co-op wasn’t open yet, but more and more people were starting to sell things on the street.

Grace Winslow and Irene Lynch had gone out for a bit.

Since they hadn’t been able to buy any vegetables, they had decided to bike to the outskirts of town.

Their luck turned out to be pretty good. They caught two big, fat fish and picked a good amount of wild greens that had just started sprouting for the spring.

Now, the fish soup simmering in the pot was giving off a savory aroma that was enough to make your mouth water.

Nolan Winslow and Lily Callahan had also returned today.

They were carrying quite a few things when they walked in.

"Mom," Lily Callahan called toward the kitchen, "my mother had me bring some things for you. I left them in the living room, so you can put them away later. Make sure to eat them! I’m going to head home with Sutherlyn now."

Irene Lynch came out, wiping her hands. "You just got back. It’s probably a hassle to cook, so why don’t you come over for dinner later?"

Lily Callahan nodded in agreement, then left with Ryan Winslow and Nolan Winslow.

Grace Winslow peeked out for a look, a little puzzled. "Why did my sister-in-law look so pale? She seemed to be in a bad mood."

"It’s probably family trouble," Irene Lynch said, shaking her head.

After all, Lily Callahan’s father was still hospitalized in the city and hadn’t been discharged yet.

They had spent a lot of money during this time.

Lily’s belly was getting bigger by the day, the baby would be born soon, and she had plenty of her own expenses to worry about. Who knows what happened when she went back to her parents’ house this time.

Grace Winslow shook her head. "I’ll ask my brother about it later."

"You need to save your money. Don’t you still have to buy a house in Coronet?" Irene Lynch shot her a look. "Your brother is a grown man; he can handle his own problems. It makes no sense for his little sister to keep bailing him out."

Grace Winslow stuck out her tongue playfully and said no more.

Back at their own home, neither Lily Callahan nor Nolan Winslow looked happy.

Normally, Lily Callahan got along fairly well with her younger brother.

They’d had a falling-out last time over her father’s situation, but they had apologized to each other afterward.

They had gone back to her parents’ home for the New Year in high spirits.

But their visit was met with a cold reception.

Everyone knew Grace Winslow was good at making money.

With Mr. Callahan in the city hospital, they needed money for everything. Mrs. Callahan wanted Lily to ask Grace for a few hundred yuan more, so they could live and eat a bit more comfortably while they were in the city taking care of him.

But Lily Callahan flatly refused.

Whenever money got involved, the family would end up at each other’s throats.

In the end, they didn’t even have a proper meal together. After staying for just two days, Lily Callahan dragged Nolan Winslow back home.

Her abdomen was starting to feel uncomfortable, seized by waves of cramping pain.

This had been going on for two days.

She was pale, and after sitting down on the sofa back home, she felt the pain in her abdomen intensify.

"Sutherlyn, my stomach... it hurts so much," Lily Callahan called out to him with difficulty.

Nolan Winslow came out and saw how pale she was. He was startled and, without a second thought, rushed forward, scooped her into his arms, and ran for the door. "Ryan! Go over to Grandpa and Grandma’s for dinner in a bit! Tell them your mom might be going into labor! We’re heading to the hospital now!"

"No, don’t go to the hospital! We don’t need to go to the hospital! Why spend that money?" Lily Callahan said with great effort, grabbing Nolan Winslow’s arm.

Nolan’s face hardened. "Do you think we can’t afford it? The doctor said at the last checkup that the baby is in the wrong position, which is very dangerous. Are you trying to abandon me and Ryan by not going to the hospital?"

"Don’t you worry about the money. I’ll figure something out. Now just be good and let’s get you to the hospital."

He picked up his pace as he spoke.

The hospital wasn’t close, and in her condition, Lily couldn’t possibly ride a bicycle. Fortunately, they ran into a man from their town driving an ox-cart. Nolan Winslow gave him two yuan and asked for a ride to the hospital.

The man readily agreed.

After dropping them off, he even offered a few words of good luck.

Nolan Winslow had no time for pleasantries. He rushed into the hospital, still carrying her. "Doctor! Nurse! Please help my wife! I think she’s about to give birth!"

A doctor and nurse quickly arrived with a stretcher and wheeled her toward the maternity ward.

Nolan Winslow tried to follow, but a nurse stopped him. "Go pay the admission fee. If she’s really in labor, she’ll need to be admitted. Be quick about it, you’ll have to come back to fill out forms."

Not daring to waste a second, Nolan Winslow turned and ran to pay the fees.
