I Reincarnated as the World's Worst Healer-Chapter 75: The Guardian of the Inverted Tower (2)
A white rabbit with red eyes stood atop a giant pile of gold and precious jewels.
"Welcome, unfortunate players... Welcome to my lair and your grave."
The small animal spoke with a deep and terrifying voice as it looked at its guests, who had no idea how to react to the sight.
Lucian, the green-haired half-elf, stared at the rabbit-shaped being in disbelief. He tried to draw his black sword, one that had once belonged to a dark elf.
But Ebony, with a serious look, raised her hand and stopped him.
"We are here to claim a treasure. By right, we have earned a treasure from those you guard, Lord of the Burrows," the blonde girl said politely while bowing slightly.
"Oh, I see one of you actually has manners. I’m pleased to see a corpse that knows its place," the rabbit said as it hopped through the gold until it reached the group of friends, then continued speaking.
"But how do you know my name? No one has come to this place for centuries, at least no one who managed to leave. Tell me, little one, your name."
"I am Ebony Strange... I’ve heard of your wonderful legend, that’s why we came to this place. It’s an honor to stand before your fluffiness."
The rabbit tilted its head slightly upon hearing the girl. It seemed to recognize that particular and irritating way of speaking.
However, it had no time or interest in mortals, so after scratching its ear it looked back at the girl.
"You say you came for a treasure you earned, but as far as I know you didn’t descend even a single floor. None of my servants were here to oppose your path, so I doubt you’ve earned anything."
"So I’m afraid you won nothing. In fact, you cheated by taking advantage of the fact that this tower didn’t have enough floors to put up resistance."
Annoyed, the rabbit began inspecting the gold coins it held. Some had seals so ancient that no one could guess what country they belonged to. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"Well, we did defeat the boss of the first floor of the surface tower, sir," the blonde said in a sweet voice.
"Yeah, the tower above. I don’t give a damn about that one, it’s not mine, so it doesn’t count," the rabbit said as it began burrowing into the gold as if digging through it, disappearing into the sea of coins.
Daniel, seeing the rabbit disappear for a moment, thought about taking advantage of the opportunity and stealing a few coins, since their guardian wasn’t watching him.
But at that moment Ebony turned her gaze toward the fifteen-year-old boy and, with a deadly expression, stopped him. If they offended this ancient spirit, nothing and no one, not even an army, could save them.
"Well, it’s true we haven’t suffered enough, but a spirit of your caliber surely has a plan for situations like this," Ebony said kindly and politely.
"That’s true, I’m always prepared... But this time I don’t feel like thinking, I just want to kill you. It’s been a long time since I crushed the flesh of a living being. It’s boring staying here alone. A good fight would do me some good."
The rabbit spoke in a sinister voice as it began expanding its magic. It was so dense and powerful that for a moment everyone present understood their position.
From among the coins rose a three-meter-tall bipedal creature. It looked like a humanoid rabbit with gigantic horns, while its hands had turned into claws like those of a bear.
With a grin it revealed its teeth, all sharp like a shark’s, while its eyes began splitting until there were eight eyes across its face.
"I hope you understand, miss... But I don’t feel like following rules or protocols. I just want to have fun."
The magical energy filling the room was so dense and suffocating that Lucian and Daniel began sweating in fear. It didn’t even occur to them to defend themselves; their instincts had given them the unnatural option of simply accepting death.
But for Ebony it was different. In her previous life, she had cleared this level again and again. She knew that creature better than anyone.
"Then, dear spirit... let’s play," the blonde said calmly with a confident smile.
Her companions, upon hearing those words, wanted to scream a thousand insults and even punch the girl, but their legs wouldn’t move as the monstrous rabbit stretched a grin from ear to ear, twisting its flesh and showing all its teeth.
"PERFECT! Then try to survive longer than the last group."
"Nope," the blonde said, interrupting the furry monster’s excitement.
"...No?..." the Lord of the Burrows replied in disbelief.
"Yep, I said no. Not like that, spirit. No matter how powerful you are, you’re still bound by the rules of spirits. A game is a game, it’s not all violence. Games can be fun without acting like cavemen."
The girl’s polite yet cold words shook the rabbit’s expression. No one had spoken to it like that before, at least not in the last thousand years.
Suddenly the rabbit began to laugh as its form started to change until it became an ordinary rabbit again.
"Ha ha ha... How curious. You remind me of an arrogant fellow who entertained me more than a thousand years ago. Strange, perhaps he was your ancestor... Anyway, tell me little soul trapped in my jaws, what game do you propose to cure my boredom and save your life?"
Ebony, unafraid of the monster’s words, took a breath and looked at the pile of treasures in the room, pointing to one in particular.
"Let’s play chess. I assume you know it since you have a board."
"Chess?" her companions and even the rabbit said in unison.
A funeral silence immediately filled the room, because no one there knew what that game was, except for her and the rabbit.
"(Oh oh... I think I screwed up...)" she thought nervously as she looked at the rabbit, a drop of sweat running down her forehead.
"So that’s how it is... Interesting. I didn’t know there were still Visitors," the rabbit said as it hopped toward a chessboard hidden among the gold and silver.
"No no... I’m not—"
"Stop playing games, woman, or I’ll kill you. I’m not stupid, I know Visitors are illegal. But relax, I don’t care. Visitors are fun, they always have things to teach."
Ebony swallowed when she heard the reasonable words of a being so jealous and miserly that in her previous life it had always been in a foul mood.
"Hey girl, tell me what the hell you want. If it’s something stupid I’ll eat you. If you’re risking your lives, you must have come for something worthy of a legend."
"...That..." Ebony hesitated for a moment, but then gathered her courage and said:
"We came for a map of the Tower of the Northern Ancestors... because we want to search for the Eyes of God."
