I Received System to Become Dragonborn-Chapter 924: Inside The Hut
Chapter 924: Inside The Hut
The burly man lowered himself into one of the rickety wooden chairs near the fire. The chair creaked under his weight.
His eyes were cold and sharp, flicked from Yara to Varn, then lingered on both with a gaze that felt like a blade pressing to their skin. His thick brows furrowed, enhancing his naturally intimidating features.
A moment later, Darel sat down opposite him, his jaw tight and posture stiff.
The man folded his arms. "I respect the fact that you didn’t try to run."
None of them responded aloud, though all three felt the same thought churn quietly inside. "We couldn’t have run from you even if we tried!"
The burly man leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. "You’ve clearly been through something. I want to hear it. Everything. From the start."
There was a pause. Then Darel nodded slightly. "Alright."
He began speaking in a low voice. "After we entered the forest, everything changed fast. The weather turned colder than we expected. Then came the thick, white, and unnatural mist. You could barely see ten feet in front of you. Thankfully we got our amulet so we can still see."
Darel glanced at Yara and Varn, to let them continue.
"Not long after that," Yara continued, "we started seeing things in the shadows. Shapes that moved with strange movements. Then came the creatures. They all gray, pale, and fast. They also have different shapes that looks terrifying. They weren’t like anything we’ve seen before. They didn’t speak. Just attacked."
"They weren’t from this world, Sir," Varn added, his voice raspy. "I don’t know what kind of Magic the cult triggered, but they opened a path to somewhere else and let those creatueres in."
Darel nodded grimly. "The amulet the cult gave us helped a little. It formed a barrier of protection around us and kept us hidden for a short time and make the mist retreat back. But it didn’t stop the grey creatures. The monsters could still smell us or sense us somehow."
The burly man’s face didn’t change as he listened, but a slight twitch in his left eye betrayed something. Doubt? Disbelief? Or perhaps deeper understanding. Darel and the others didn’t know.
Darel continued. "There were ten of us in the party but those things cut us down. Some didn’t even scream, they just got killed and then we left them in the forest."
"I see," the man said at last. "So this failure happened not just because you were outmatched, but because the amulet—the one the cult claimed would protect you—failed to do so."
At that, the room fell silent.
Darel’s fingers tensed around his knee. Varn glanced at Yara, who avoided looking at either of them. None of them dared speak of them—the two Dragonbornaa. That terrifying blazing Magic force who tore through the battle like a storm and looked at them like insects.
Could he sense betrayal from across kingdoms? Could he come for them? They didn’t know but they won’t risk it.
Darel made the decision.
"Yes," he said, voice steady. "But also... the other party was stronger than we expected. They weren’t just some backwater team. They were high ranking adventurers, maybe even higher than me. We recognized Jan and his group—they’re known in Qomore. But the other group who came from Astoria were just as strong."
The burly man narrowed his eyes at Darel. It felt like he was trying to peel away the truth by sight alone. Darel met his gaze without flinching.
After a few seconds, the man leaned back slowly and nodded.
"I understand." He stood up. "Anything else you want to say?"
Darel shook his head. "No. That’s all."
Yara and Varn remained silent, keeping their expressions as calm as possible.
The burly man exhaled deeply. "Then this failure... isn’t as big as we thought. Word is the cultists who hired us are dead or gone. They won’t be coming for their refund. And we already received half the payment."
He looked down at them one more time. "You all can rest. You’ll work again once you’re ready."
With that, he turned and walked to the door. The wood groaned as he stepped out, then closed behind him.
The silence that followed was almost suffocating.
Darel sank back into his chair, every muscle going slack. Yara let out a shaky breath. Varn closed his eyes and muttered, "Shit..."
They had survived the monsters of the forest. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
And now... they had just survived the organization. Barely.
The silence lingered a moment longer. It was heavy like a wet cloak draped over their shoulders. Then Yara finally spoke.
"So... what now?" she asked with low and tired voice.
Darel rubbed a hand down his face. "We do what we’ve always done. Go back to the orgaanization and report in when we’re healed. We just take the mockery and jokes about our failur." He looked at them, his expression hollow but resolute. "Better that than being hunted."
"Hunted by the Dragonborn, you mean," Varn muttered.
Darel didn’t reply. He didn’t have to.
They all remembered it. Actually, they lingered few minutes longer around the edge of the forest.
They saw the blazing red light, the thunderous roar that split the air, the aura that felt like the sky itself wanted to collapse on them. That wasn’t a man. That wasn’t even a trained warrior or Mage. That was something else.
"It shouldn’t be possible to have that kind of power," Darel said quietly. "We felt the pressure of that ancient god’s Magic from the edge of the forest and yet they fought it. Not only that... they won. Without burning the forest to ash."
Varn shook his head slowly. "I thought we were going to see the whole region leveled, forest gone, and a lot of explotion of Magic. But it didn’t happen."
Yara frowned, thinking. As a Battle-Mage herself she could feel more than them. She said, "No explosion of light either. Just that heavy sensation and then... calm. Like something gave up its anger and went to sleep."
They were silent again, each lost in their thoughts.
"Whatever they are," Darel said at last, his voice low, "they’re not like us. Not even close. That power wasn’t human. Wasn’t even Elven. I never thought that Dragonborn have that much power."
They all fell quiet again.
None of them said it, but the same thought circled in their minds.
If beings like that exist, and they chose to fight for this world... then they were lucky.
