I Only Want To Kill-Chapter 75: Awakened League
Blaze and Alyson do not have a driver’s license yet, so Kana has to drive them.
Blaze’s household is poor for sure, but they still have an old car that is perfectly in use.
They eat a fulfilling breakfast together before going.
In the car, the three share some small talk together. Mostly about the current state of the city.
"What do you think will happen now that the Roof is destroyed?" Alyson says.
"Nothing much is going to change. There is a lot of filth left in this city." Blaze says.
"Yeah. But I think the criminals will be much more hesitant to do something as crazy as the Roof, don’t you think?" Kana says.
"That’s for sure. But there is still much work to be done, Mother." Blaze says.
"What are you planning to do, kiddo?"
Kana looks at her son’s eyes via the rearview mirror. His eyes immediately tense up with rage and coldness when she asks that.
"I’ll cleanse this city."
"I understand. You do whatever you want, kiddo. But remember, don’t do anything that is out of your reach, alright?
Pick your enemies wisely."
Kana says.
"Don’t worry, Mom. I am an S-rank Awakened, you know."
Both Alyson and Kana share a deep breath.
"S-rank? How do you know?" Kana says.
"Wait! Doesn’t this mean you’re the strongest in Akansa?"
There is no A-rank in this city, everyone knows that. So Blaze can easily be counted as the strongest.
"In a sense, yes. But there is more than just superpower."
This is an advanced society. A neutralization device like the Barrier is not a rare sight. If Blaze doesn’t have his items, he may have been killed at the Roof.
The Police Force has some really good high-tech weapons as well. The Electon that Isaac saw last night was only the weakest of them all.
"We’re here!"
The Awakened League, the tallest building inside Akansa with 27 total floors. This place is in the city center, near Blaze’s old high school.
It is a white, pristine building with an S symbol engraved in the front.
S for S-rank, the highest form of power in Ranas.
Below it are golden letters spelling out ’Awakened League’.
Kana puts her car into the parking lot. Then the three enter the building.
There are two security guards standing right at the door. Both are wearing black suits with black sunglasses on their eyes.
They step in front of the group when they try to enter.
"State your business."
"I’m here to register for a power badge."
"You?"
The guard looks Blaze up and down. It is rare for an old kid like Blaze to register his power.
All Awakened usually receive their power before ten.
However, Blaze’s clothes and demeanor do not give them confidence at all.
His pants are inches short and only go to his calf. His shirt is short and barely able to reach his waist.
Blaze still wears his old clothes, the ones for a 1.65-meter boy. This causes him to look very odd in front of everyone else.
Kana chuckles.
"We need to buy you some new clothes after this, Blaze."
Blaze scratches his head and smiles.
"Pardon our rudeness. However, things have been very tense lately because of a terrorist attack yesterday. So we can’t just let anyone through.
May I ask to see your power first?"
"Hey! A lot of people went in and out of the League! Why are you stopping us?
Alyson speaks up.
"It’s alright, Alyson. No need to cause a ruckus. They are just doing their job."
The guards are very skeptical, sure, but they are very respectful. Blaze sees no reason to crash out.
"Thanks for understanding, kid."
"Well. My power is physical-based." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Blaze holds his breath. A spherical aura envelopes him, and he darts behind the guards, leaving them no time to react.
Sweat runs on the guard’s forehead.
"What an insane speed. You must be an Enhancer then.
Please accept our apologies for the interruption. Come in!"
The guards stand aside and bow lightly.
Blaze nods to them and leads the women inside.
Enhancer, a term to categorize Awakened with physical power enhancement.
This, along with Manipulator and Controller, are the three most common superpower types in Ranas.
Inside the building, a vast empty hallway with waiting chairs placed at either side. In front is the working desk that is placed behind a transparent, reinforced glass.
The Awakened League looks exactly like some type of bank with all the countermeasures ready.
It is understandable to be fair, as some Awakened can be really pissed off when they receive a much lower assessment than they thought.
"Hi there! Welcome to Akansa Awakened League. My name is Nicole. How may I help you?"
The girl behind the counter says. Her eyes flash blue when she observes Blaze.
With a quick glimpse, she already examines most of Blaze’s physical prowess.
The body is naturally enhanced. This isn’t coming from training. His feet are light, having no trouble carrying that large frame. His power should be physical-based at most.
"Hi! I’m here to register for a power badge."
"Oh? This old?"
Nicole blurts out. She knows she has made a mistake, so she quickly covers it up.
"I’m sorry to ask. Let me prepare the paperwork for you. What is your name, sir?"
"Blaze Singer."
"Thank you, sir. Please stay in the waiting area until we call your name."
The three sit down on the waiting chairs.
A girl with a red jacket walks inside the building. She also comes to Nicole for help.
"Hi! I’m June Richmond. I lost my power badge because of the Voidgate recently. Can you issue me a new one?"
"Certainly, ma’am. Please stay in the waiting area. We will call you once the paperwork is ready."
She sits down on the opposite side of Blaze’s group.
Oh... That’s her.
Blaze remembers her. He encounters her for a brief moment in the Mirror Layer.
She was with Dominic, the good cop that died due to the Hollows.
What a tragedy... He died, and the corrupt cops live.
Dominic Renly, he was good with Blaze and his mom. Blaze suddenly thinks they should visit his family to check up on them.
Renly’s family is in the same situation as Blaze’s. He is the only Awakened in the house. Losing him means big trouble.
Blaze wouldn’t want any family to go through what he and his mother did. Maybe they can help Renly’s family to an extent.
Blaze stands up and approaches June.
"Hi. You must be Miss Richmond."
June looks at Blaze. His face is unfamiliar to her, but his eyes... She has a feeling she saw him somewhere before.
"I am, and you are?"
"I’m Blaze. That’s my mother, Kana, and my friend, Alyson.
Me and my mother are your aunt’s neighbors."
"Oh. You want to ask about her? Unfortunately, she isn’t around. She should return in early January or a bit later."
"Oh, yes. I know. I just want to come and say hi, make sure you are alright. The Voidgate was closed not long ago."
"Ah. Only minor injuries. Luckily I was saved."
"That’s fortunate. I knew a guy too. His name was Dominic Renly. He died in the incident."
"Renly?"
June’s expression is frozen, and sorrow takes over her face. She lets out a long exhale.
"You know him too? I was there when he died."
June clenches her fists, her shoulder trembles lightly.
"I wasn’t able to save him."
Blaze places a hand on June’s shoulder.
"It’s alright. It wasn’t your fault. It’s the Void."
"I wish I could do something for him..."
"I’m intending to check up on his family later. You want to come?"
"..."
Meeting the family of the guy that you couldn’t save... I don’t think I can face them. But I should meet them and give them closure.
June fights internally. She wishes she were stronger. If she was, Dominic might even be alive right now.
They were strangers then, but he risked his life to save her. She owes his family at least an apology.
"Yeah. If you don’t mind me accompanying you."
"Blaze Singer! June Richmond! Please step forward to the counter."
