Chapter 28 - 28: The Wolf Cub

Blaze follows William into a small alley.

Inside, a huge white egg is floating slightly above the ground.

The egg has some blue patterns running across its surface. Beneath its shell, a soft silver glow pulses gently and steadily like the beat of a heart.

This is no normal egg, as none is as big as a human adult.

"What is that?"

Blaze says.

"Right! I also had the same question the first time I saw it, Master.

What do you think it is?"

William says.

Blaze approaches the egg cautiously.

The egg seems harmless at least, but you can never be too careful in the Void. Blaze holds the Destruction Wand in front, ready to blast the weird object to the underworld if it even twitches.

But no, nothing happens, and it floats in place without any movement.

Blaze tries to touch it with his finger.

Warm, soft, and smooth. It's alive for sure.

"Should we kill it, Master?"

William says.

Blaze doesn't answer. He is too pondering that same question.

With the power of the Lantern, Blaze can suck out any soul and enslave it. He doesn't even need to store it in the Inventory nowadays as it is bound to his soul.

The best way to check what this thing is but not kill it is maybe to suck out its soul first.

Faint yellow light covers Blaze's palm. He puts his hand on the egg, and quickly, the yellow light enters the eggshell.

Blaze can feel something in there. He pulls his hand back, and with it, a yellow soul of a wolf cub.

"What the?"

Although it is obviously a baby with its unopened eyes and underdeveloped features, its size is too large for any wolf.

The soul of the wolf cub is at least 170 centimeters long, dangling on the hand of Blaze.

Blaze rolls his eyes.

This is definitely not a normal animal.

A giant wolf in the Void. There is no other explanation that it is a monster of the void.

Blaze has seen Hollows and three entirely different from each other Crises. This wolf right here is likely to be a Crisis.

Now, Blaze has to decide what he wants to do with it.

It is harmless, and killing it will be effortless.

But Blaze doesn't really want to do it. As harmful as it can be when it hatches, right now it is still but an infant.

I wonder...

His irises turn yellow, and the energy around his palm radiates intensely.

Usually, when Blaze enslaves other people, there will be a huge struggle and pain coming from the victim.

But now, the symbol gently engraves itself on the wolf cub's forehead. It does not resist or look to be in pain at all.

Hah! So the last 0.01% of the optional objective is this little guy here.

"You can go back now."

Blaze says. William hands him the backpack before disappearing into the Clone Storage.

Blaze uses the Grappling Hook to get on top of the roof of the building. His body slowly becomes transparent, a sign that he is teleporting back to the real world.

He unequips the Tattered Cloak, returning to his true humanoid form.

With the new Inventory slot, Blaze has just enough space to receive the mission reward.

There's nothing left to do now except wait for the teleportation.

Blaze sits down on the roof, watching the sunrise at the horizon afar.

It was an eventful night. He buried his stepfather in the yard. Killed an unimaginable number of Hollows and also finished all three of the Crises.

He even enslaved one.

Blaze is tired, but his eyes are filled with determination. He still has work to do.

Alyson is still waiting for him in the real world. He will need to get to her as soon as possible when he gets back.

And also kill all those deranged scumbags that kidnap the innocent.

"Nadyr Brozovic... I am coming for you."

The figure of the boy in sport clothing slowly fades from the Mirror world, leaving nothing but destruction behind his path.

The Liberty Sons and the majority of the Awakeners are at the Voidgate. They are leaving the Void when the body starts becoming transparent as well.

Preston looks at his translucent hand and doesn't know what to think about this.

"It seems like the last Crisis was killed as well."

"No way. Who killed it? Where? How? We don't even hear any fighting."

Batrick says.

"It probably is that creature."

Anya says.

Preston nods and says: "I think so too. It has become strong enough to kill a Crisis without too much noise."

"Why does a creature like it come to the Mirror layer?"

Dastan says.

"I don't know. But it is best to report this to the Giants. They'll decide what to do with this information."

Preston says.

Leon, the tight-lipped one in the group, also speaks up: "This city seems wrong, Captain. There's just something really, really wrong with it. I can feel it."

"I agree, Leon. It is the city of Angels in the end. It got this title for a reason." Preston says.

Anya lets out a long breath. The City of Angels, where all Awakened come to have a fun time. Akansa is notoriously known for its prostitution. There must be a reason that it was able to develop this much and this quickly.

One needs to think for a little bit and can come to the conclusion: "Where do all the girls come from?"

Anya didn't think much about it before. But now, she has some ideas.

"Are we going to do anything about it, Captain?" Anya says.

Preston's expression darkens. His heart tells him yes, they must do something about it. But they have responsibility, people that they care about.

People that will fall into harm if they decide to step into this hornet's nest.

Sometimes, you have to look away even if your heart tells you the opposite.

"We can't do anything, Anya.

Liberty Sons? It is only a joke title amongst the mercenaries. We are nothing more than washed-up C-rank Awakeners. Those that were abandoned by the Federation, Vox, and the Order.

We can't change this world, Anya.

We will only kill ourselves in a pointless attempt.

Pretend like you don't know anything."

"But, Captain..."

"Enough! Know your place, Anya.

I am nothing more than a walking battery. Batrick is a measly wall. Dastan is no faster than a high school student. Leon can't even kill a Crisis.

And you, you have no combat power.

What do you want to do, Anya? What do you think you can do?"

Anya lowers her head in shame. She knows what Preston's saying is true.

"Just reported the anomalies. If the Giants want to, they will take care of it."

"And if they don't?" Batrick says.

"Then that means it is their doing." Preston grits each word.

All the people inside the Void slowly disappear, returning to where they are supposed to be.
