Chapter 65: Infiltration of the Merchant Mansion

The following night.

"Surgical infiltration, right?" Arnold took a deep breath. "I’m not good at this stuff, you know..." He complained, looking at Edward beside him.

On the other side of the wall that blocked their view was Silas Merchant’s mansion.

"You’re an Anomaly Mage whose water looks like shadow, Arnold. You have to know how to do it." Edward replied jokingly.

Both were dressed in black from head to toe, like specialized killers.

"Just because I have shadow-type magic doesn’t mean I should know how to do it..." he protested.

"But you do know, right?"

Arnold stared at him. He wanted to protest once more with, "I know... but it’s not because I have shadow-type magic!"

Finally, he gave in and looked up. "I’ll rely on your information to know when to move above these walls. For the record, I don’t know if I’ll be able to calculate the height correctly."

Edward smiled. "I’ll trust you."

His little caterpillars were already in place in different locations. One was on Lander’s clothes, who was walking through the main entrance behind Clara and Miss Mery. Lander was acting as Clara’s mercenary to get inside.

The other was traveling with Aurora... through the air. That one was already infiltrated.

The other was watching the other side of the walls, near where they both were.

The night was dark. Edward looked up and watched the black clouds completely cover the moon. It was as if the world had aligned so that he could complete this mission without too much trouble.

The place where they were standing was one of the tree-lined sidewalks surrounding the mansion. It wasn’t easily visible without lighting, and they had made sure to break some lamps in this area the day before. So, with the moon hidden and the lamps far from their usual place, this was the perfect night for infiltration.

His ears picked up movement, and a slight snap of the fingers signaled the moment. Lander had crossed the mansion’s gate.

There was no one on the other side of the wall. The place was deserted. Aurora had also done her job.

It was time to go in.

He nodded to Arnold, who smiled. "Hold on to me. It might shake you up a bit."

Suddenly, Edward felt as if an aquatic energy enveloped him from head to toe. He felt his clothes soaking wet... but the real shock came when a drastic movement shook him.

AUUUH! Far away, he heard a howl like that of a wolf.

Arnold’s eyes changed from their characteristic yellow to a deep, dark shade.

He jumped, and a jet of dark energy shot from his hand toward the top of the wall. This energy then transformed into a perfect wolf’s claw, which clung firmly to the wall.

Then their bodies were swung upward by the force of the claw and subsequently thrown forward by inertia...

Edward could see the corner of the wall grazing his nose, sending a chill down his spine, before he began to fall.

He tried to glide to avoid the damage from the fall. However, Arnold did not let go.

The energy in Arnold’s hand and surrounding them receded and transformed into a humanoid wolf-like beast beneath them. It was about 2.5 meters tall and its arms were enormous.

It raised its arms and held them precisely before they fell to the ground. When there was no more force from the fall, it released them without remorse and let them fall nose-first onto the floor.

Edward frowned and brought a hand to his nose. It hurt, but it wasn’t serious. Instead...

"That’s your..." He wanted to ask him about his summoned beast, but Arnold simply shrugged.

"Come on. We don’t have much time. We still have to kill one idiot and rescue another... Sigh, everything would be easy if we had to kill them all." He complained with words that would send chills down anyone’s spine. Although Edward knew he was joking.

They both moved quickly inside.

"The area is clear," Aurora whispered when they arrived behind her. "The girl seems to be working well."

Edward nodded. He could hear her. She had made a good plan to return, which allowed her to clear the area of all guards, so the three of them began to run inside the mansion.

"I’ll send the caterpillars first, let’s move forward carefully," whispered Edward, before passing into the main hallway at the back of the mansion.

They walked through narrow corridors, following the map Clara had given them, which was already imprinted in their minds.

The mansion wasn’t too big inside, it wasn’t a castle, so getting to the basement entrance was easy.

From there, they only had to walk down a short flight of stairs, where they found a metal door reinforced with expensive minerals. It had no magic or any kind of defense mechanism, because who would want to enter the basement of a mansion?

Edward pressed himself against it and grabbed the padlock and other metal mechanisms that secured it. His butterfly glowed beneath his clothes, coiled in his right hand, and fire shot out of his hand. Immediately, the metal began to weaken, as if it were becoming malleable.

He pushed the door slowly so as not to make any noise due to the lack of grease on the hinges.

Suddenly, Edward froze when he heard voices on the other side.

"Why do we have to set these traps in this place? For God’s sake, only rats and cockroaches come here." A man complained, preparing something on the ground with a shovel.

"There’s nothing we can do. The master told us it was necessary to prevent that bastard Silas from escaping. Do you want to disobey the master’s orders?"

The first to speak made a sound with his mouth to express his dissatisfaction, but continued working.

The other man shook his head as he looked at him and continued working.

One was setting traps on the floor and the other on the walls... for one, this made no sense, for the other, they were necessary orders... 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

But suddenly, both of their vision darkened and their nostrils were immediately invaded by... water?

Both fell to the ground just five seconds later with no vital signs.

"Get in quickly. We have to get out of here," said Arnold, who had gone ahead to kill them. He didn’t even glance back at them for a second.

Edward tensed up when he heard him, but he didn’t have time to process what had happened. Aurora quickly pulled him into the basement.
