I Level Up Dragons with My Evolution System-Chapter 50: An offer from Count Hazzard
Inside the training room, the man took off his hat and introduced himself formally.
"I am Marlon, one of Count Hazzard’s emissaries," he said, extending his hand.
Edward shook it out of politeness. "What do he have for me, His Majesty the Count?" he asked, puzzled.
There were only two things that made him familiar with this man: Hazzard’s enmity with Ashford and the fact that Count Hazzard owns the mines where his father works.
Other than that, he had never seen him before.
’Could this have something to do with my father?’ Suddenly, his heart felt slightly heavy.
"I would like to ask you first, do you know Abraham Lux?"
Edward felt even more pressure and frowned. "He’s my father," he replied. "Has something happened?"
"Oh, no, no." Marlon waved his hands quickly when he saw that Edward was overthinking things. "His father is a great miner, the best we have. If anything happened to him, we’d be in trouble for a while." He joked a little.
’Thank goodness...’ Edward felt a great weight lift from his heart.
"Good." Edward smiled.
"He’s been in the mines recently, working very hard. Even the count has considered raising his salary several times," Marlon said.
’Is my father in the mines?’ Edward had to keep that in mind; knowing where his father was was crucial. Now that he has grown stronger and can see his progress coming quickly, he will not let anything happen to him.
However, he didn’t say much. He just nodded respectfully. "Yes, my father is a hard worker. Thanks to him, I’ve made it this far." He didn’t want to bring up the subject of his father if it had nothing to do with him, because right now he has no idea where he really is.
Marlon stared at him for a brief moment before nodding with a chuckle.
"Anyway, I didn’t come here to talk about your father, although I wanted to confirm it for my own sake, since I know your father personally. When you see him, please give him my regards and tell him that I spoke well of him to the count. He will surely know who I am."
"I’ll remember that." Edward nodded. "If it’s not about my father, then what is it?" He changed the subject, as he already felt a little strange talking about his father, whom he hadn’t seen in over a month.
Finally, Marlon dropped the conversation about Abraham and decided to get to the main point.
"Young Edward, we truly admire your strength and skill with the sword. That day, I was impressed by what I saw, even more so because I understood that you still have a lot of growth ahead of you. I spoke to the count, and he also gave his approval, so I came to offer you official entry into one of the regiments that the count sponsors, as a full member. To the 99th Regiment. You must know about its reputation." Marlon said, extending his hand with a written letter.
Edward looked at the letter and frowned. It didn’t say much, but it was signed by the count himself. It was a formal invitation and at the same time an order to the 99th Regiment to accept him as a True Member without reason for opposition.
It didn’t mention the benefits, but anyone with information about these regiments would know.
Although Regiment 99 was not one of the 5 Celestial Regiments, it was not too far from being one.
It had several 5-Star members and numerous 4-Star members. It is a Regiment that only opens up for you to join when you reach the status of a 4-Star Student, which was amazing!
The resources they gave their members were in a completely different league!
It was as if one of the big companies in the City suddenly offered you a boss job with an extremely high salary, just because!
’It’s strange.’
Edward knew that his value shouldn’t be that high, so he wondered, what does this count want? Sending a letter with his own signature was much heavier than sending one of his Emissaries to offer him this deal, so something was wrong.
"You don’t need to answer right away," Marlon said, noticing his hesitation. "You can think about it this week and give me an answer on Monday. As long as you’re not in a regiment by then, we’ll offer you the resources of a True Member in Regiment 99, even though you’re a 3-Star student."
That was more than convenient. Giving him a whole week to respond to such a tempting proposal revealed how much they valued him... or that there was something else behind it. Edward leaned toward the latter.
Even so, he had nothing to think about.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Marlon." He shook his head. "Actually, I already have plans about which regiment to join based on my needs. I won’t lie to you that Regiment 99 is tempting, and even more so if I join as a True Member, but it’s not what I’m looking for."
Edward wrapped the letter up again and handed it back to him.
Marlon was stunned and stared at the letter. "Don’t you understand the value of the resources of the 99th Regiment, Student Edward?" he asked, in shock.
"You could have the opportunity to evolve some of your caterpillars!" he remarked.
"I understand very well the value of what you are offering me, but it is not what I am looking for. I’m sorry." Edward was respectful from start to finish, so he handed him the letter and decided to leave.
"Are you sure about what you’re doing?" Marlon asked before Edward walked out the door.
"Of course. I really appreciate you reaching out to me, even more so for that letter from the count, and I also appreciate your kindness. But I already have a plan for my life, and I don’t want to stray from it." Edward bowed politely before walking out the door.
Marlon squeezed the letter lightly after seeing him leave, and the corners of his lips rose in a slight smile. "Well, you decided," he whispered.
.
Edward simply couldn’t accept that proposal when he had just talked to Aurora about the plan to join the 101st Regiment. Besides, for him, someone who was moving up in rank, the 99th Regiment was too small.
He simply couldn’t accept it.
Edward finally made it to the shooting range... and was greeted by an irritating shout.
"Edward Lux, being the least talented, how come you’re the last to arrive? You should be the first! You have fewer points!" Kael Vorren roared as soon as he saw him arrive. He was a fat man with a belly bigger than himself and a nose almost as big as his greasy face.
He didn’t have a single muscle in his body, but his military uniform and the insignia that identified him as a First Lieutenant in the Armed Forces were the key to understanding that he was not just any teacher.
Although his repugnance does not come from being strict, it is the fact that he openly and unscrupulously despises all who are weak or untalented.
At a glance, Edward could see that he had the other less talented students huddled in a corner, heads bowed. Who knows how many insults he had hurled at them.
’Someday I’m going to punch that big nose of yours, you old bastard.’
