Chapter 47: Result

"Professor." Gideon rose from his seat. "I’m interested in that boy."

"Why don’t you go talk to him? I can tell you that he’s an interesting boy. He has a few secrets that might interest you too," Owen replied in a relaxed voice, leaning back in his chair and pouring himself some coffee into the cup he had been using.

"You’re not going to tell me those secrets, are you?" Gideon glanced at him sideways.

Owen shrugged, laughing. "I don’t even know them myself."

"That’s amazing." Gideon turned to look at Edward once more.

"Anyway, I don’t think it’ll take you long to figure them out. Some people seem to be moving against him..." Owen scoffed. "Well, it’s ever the same. No Lux can live peacefully in this world."

Gideon nodded slightly, understanding the meaning of Owen’s words. Still, he simply smiled.

"It wouldn’t be the first time my regiment has had a Lux, you know?" Gideon turned and headed for the door, intending to return to his place.

Owen didn’t look at him, but before the doorbell rang, he spoke: "Do you want to take him to your little nest now? You don’t have much time left."

Gideon grabbed the door handle and squeezed it. He spoke before turning it. "Let’s see if he’s really worthy first."

The sound of the door and Gideon’s footsteps receding echoed in Owen’s ears.

He looked up and glanced at Edward, but his gaze didn’t linger on him. It passed over Robert and ended with the principal. His mind was full of ideas, memories, and new intrusive thoughts.

Finally, he got up and set his coffee aside before leaving the room.

Ffuf-

Edward wiped the sweat from his forehead and exhaled. ’Now I can’t tell if this is the cold of the night or the cold of the cursed energy...’ He complained.

His sword was drenched in blood, as were his hands. He took out a handkerchief and, without caring about his surroundings, began to wipe the sword and his own hand. As he did so, his sleeve shook slightly...

’To think I was able to level up my earth caterpillar with these little ones.’ He laughed to himself.

His handkerchief passed through the sword and wiped away all the blood, dropping the excess onto the ground and leaving the rest on the handkerchief.

Finally, he stood up and looked toward where the last zombie was.

It was killed by a coalition of three 1-star students.

Edward turned his gaze toward the principal, who remained impassive. His closely cropped hair, combed back with a few gray strands adorning his head, moved in the night wind... or the cursed energy, while his arms were crossed over his chest.

After watching them catch their breath, the principal finally relaxed his arms and smiled.

"Does anyone have any questions?"

Yes. They all had questions.

But they all understood what they were seeing.

The world they thought was wonderful was not wonderful at all.

The principal laughed. "Why didn’t my ancestors say so? That’s the question you’re asking yourselves right now... The answer is simple."

"We, the Beast Masters, fight against the unknown... And that is terrifying. You don’t fear a powerful enemy. You fear an enemy you know nothing about."

"Fear of the unknown creates chaos. Chaos destroys empires. And the destruction of an empire... destroys eras. It destroys races."

The principal paused. He let the students understand his words. At the same time, he looked up at the sky.

"There are fewer stars..." He whispered heavily, but smiled. "But they are all brighter. The brilliance of the stars will guide us into the future... just like in that old story."

A barely audible whisper. The memory of tonight’s name...

The Night of the Stars.

The day they would rise to shine... or fade away forever.

Now the name made sense, though it weighed heavily on the students’ hearts.

That way of shining and fading... was cruel.

’It takes cruelty for us to appreciate, doesn’t it?’ Edward thought, remembering an old saying from Earth.

You only value what you lose. Every student now values the powerful even more, those who have managed to keep them innocent... until now.

"I will announce your results from today’s tests quickly and concisely," said the principal, taking out his notebook again and deciding to change the conversation. He believed that these students were mature enough to understand his unspoken words.

"Only five of you are strong enough to be placed in the 3-Star Student category. That will be your starting point. I don’t think I need to name them." 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Although the five did not look at each other, they knew who they were.

"Those who managed to kill two puppets in the initial test are 2-Star Students..." He counted the number. "There are ten of them, a considerable amount."

"Finally, students who managed to kill one puppet are officially one-star students. If you already were one... well, not much will change for you. If not, then congratulations. But there are 25 of you, a considerable number, so be proud and work hard, your efforts will take you to the top." He put away his notebook and proceeded to explain everything they had to do from now on and the exclusive rules.

Mandatory missions and the formation of groups. He explained in detail about joining a Regiment, but told them to think about it carefully.

Later, he told them that their salaries were going to go up... to catastrophic numbers.

At least Edward was shocked when he found out that, as a 3-Star student on his own, he was going to start earning 100,000 Yakins!

For God’s sake, 100,000!

And he wasn’t even in a regiment yet!

It was difficult to process those numbers...

The principal ended with a simple: Star Night is over.

And his words activated the Mother Stone, forcing it to react and transport all the students, both those who had been tested and those from the Student Council and other unauthorized VIPs, out of the dimension.

The coliseum soon fell silent, as most of the damage had been done.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Only the heels of the principal’s shoes echoed across the sand, and soon, that incessant sound was joined by others... those of the elders.

"A new school year begins," said the principal, and he laughed. "Shall we begin?"

The elders shrugged. "We have no choice."

The night was over for the students. For them, it had just begun.
