Chapter 29: Clearing the Military Base

Adrian aimed his FN-SCAR H through the open door of the Black Hawk.

The helicopter continued circling above the air base while the rotors thundered over the quiet countryside.

Below them, movement began spreading across the installation.

Zombies were pouring out from the buildings in a frenzied manner. They really look like zombies from World War Z. And he hates those types of zombies who run fast.

"Those things are running," Noah said from the door gun position.

Ryan leaned forward and squinted toward the ground.

"Yeah... I see them."

The infected were no longer staggering slowly like the ones they had seen in Manila.

These were sprinting.

They burst out from the barracks doors and maintenance buildings, some tripping over each other as they rushed toward the sound of the helicopter above them.

"Pilot, lower us a bit," Adrian said.

"Copy."

The Black Hawk descended slightly, bringing the runway into clearer view.

More infected were spilling out of a hangar.

Some still wore torn Philippine Air Force uniforms. A few had helmets or tactical vests hanging loosely on their bodies.

Jake lifted his binoculars.

"Dozens coming out of the barracks... more behind them."

Ryan gripped the handles of the door-mounted weapon.

"Alright."

He glanced toward Adrian.

"Say the word."

Adrian steadied his rifle against the frame of the helicopter door.

The infected below had already begun sprinting across the runway.

"Engage."

Ryan squeezed the trigger, and their primary weapons spat rounds after rounds on the zombies.

Notifications flooded Adrian’s system but he paid it no mind. He also glanced at the door gunner who was armed with an M134 minigun mounted to the side of the helicopter.

"Join us brother."

"Yes sir," the gunner complied.

The weapon began to spin, and the electric motor whined for a split second.

Then the minigun roared.

A stream of rounds poured out in a continuous line toward the runway below.

The ground erupted as bullets tore through the sprinting infected. Bodies dropped instantly, some tumbling forward mid-run as the rounds ripped through them.

Ryan swept his rifle toward the runners crossing the runway.

"Barracks side!" Jake called.

Adrian adjusted his aim and fired.

The SCAR-H kicked against his shoulder. One of the sprinting infected dropped immediately, its body sliding across the concrete.

Beside him, Ryan fired controlled bursts from his rifle, cutting down another pair that had broken ahead of the group.

Jake leaned slightly out of the helicopter door and fired three quick shots.

Each round found its mark.

Below them, the infected continued rushing toward the helicopter, drawn by the thunder of the rotors.

"More coming from the hangar!" Noah shouted.

Adrian shifted his rifle toward the large maintenance hangar where several figures were spilling out of the shadows.

He fired again.

Two zombies collapsed near the doorway.

At the same moment, the door gunner beside them brought the M134 minigun fully to life.

The barrels spun rapidly.

Then the weapon unleashed a violent stream of fire.

The minigun roared like a chainsaw made of gunfire.

Tracer rounds streaked across the runway and slammed into the charging infected. Bodies were torn apart as the rounds ripped through them.

Several zombies were thrown backward from the impacts.

Others collapsed mid-sprint.

Ryan glanced briefly at the gunner.

"Now that’s some serious firepower."

The gunner kept the weapon steady, sweeping it across the tarmac in controlled arcs.

The stream of bullets cut through the remaining runners pouring out of the barracks building.

Concrete chips flew across the runway.

Within seconds, the front wave of infected had been shredded.

Adrian kept firing in steady rhythm.

Another zombie dropped.

Then another.

Jake lowered his rifle slightly and scanned the base through the open door.

"Movement still coming from the maintenance sheds!"

Adrian looked in that direction.

The doors of another building had opened, and several more infected were stumbling out before breaking into full sprint.

"Pilot," Adrian said through the headset.

"Yes sir?"

"Bring us closer to those sheds."

"Copy."

The Black Hawk banked and moved across the base at low altitude.

The door gunner swung the minigun toward the sheds.

The barrels spun again.

The weapon roared.

A line of fire ripped across the concrete in front of the buildings.

The infected rushing out were torn apart almost instantly.

Within moments, the area around the maintenance sheds fell silent.

Ryan looked down at the runway.

Bodies were now scattered everywhere.

"Looks like we woke up the whole base."

Adrian kept his rifle trained on the ground.

"Good."

He fired one last shot at a crawling infected near the edge of the runway.

The body stopped moving.

"Let’s make sure none of them are left."

The Black Hawk continued circling above the air base.

The rotors beat against the morning air while the helicopter moved slowly along the length of the runway.

Adrian kept his rifle pointed downward, scanning the concrete and the surrounding buildings through his optic.

Bodies were scattered everywhere.

Most of the infected had fallen across the runway where the minigun had cut them down. Others lay near the entrances of the barracks and maintenance hangars.

But Adrian knew better than to assume it was over.

"Keep watching the buildings," he said.

Ryan nodded and shifted his position slightly at the open door.

Jake raised his binoculars again and scanned the far side of the base.

"Hangar row looks clear," he reported. "No movement."

Noah leaned out slightly and looked toward the control tower.

"Tower looks empty too."

The helicopter banked gently as the pilot completed another pass around the installation.

The minigun door gunner kept the weapon aimed downward, ready in case another wave appeared.

Adrian watched the barracks for several seconds.

Nothing moved.

"Pilot," he said.

"Yes sir?"

"Take us lower. One more sweep."

"Copy."

The Black Hawk descended again, now flying barely a few dozen meters above the ground.

They moved along the perimeter fence first.

Adrian checked the guard towers.

Empty.

Ryan scanned the vehicle motor pool next.

Several military trucks sat parked in neat rows.

None of them moved.

Jake shifted his binoculars toward the fuel depot.

"Fuel tanks look intact," he said.

Adrian nodded slightly.

That alone made the base valuable.

The helicopter continued along the final side of the installation before returning toward the runway.

Still nothing.

"Looks like that was the last of them."

Adrian studied the base for a few more seconds before lowering his rifle.

"Yeah."

He tapped the frame of the cockpit lightly.

"Pilot, bring us down."

"Yes sir."

The Black Hawk turned toward the far end of the runway.

Dust and loose debris began swirling across the tarmac as the helicopter descended.

The landing gear touched the concrete with a solid thump.

The rotors continued spinning as the aircraft settled at the edge of the airfield.

Ryan glanced outside at the quiet base.

"Well," he said.

Adrian stood and slung the SCAR-H across his chest.

"We just captured an airbase. Now we have to build this first from the ground up."

"What do you mean?" Ryan tilted his head to the side.

Adrian opened his system’s inventory. "I’m going all-out on this one."
