I Found a Door to the Elven Realm-Chapter 23: Learning Skills from other Monsters?
The next day, Eren was killing Level 3 Slimes as usual.
He also heard the sounds of wolves from time to time today. But he didn’t care too much, as Emily was going to be on this side of the village this afternoon.
Since he didn’t have any attacking skills, if a wolf got in front of him, he would probably run away with all his might.
During a few hours of hunting, mostly slimes, the only thing that didn’t make sense to him was the way the corpses vanished. He didn’t know why, but when monsters hunted each other, the bodies didn’t disappear, while the ones he killed vanished in sparkles.
He wished he could eat magical rabbit meat.
Eren decided to sit and rest for a while under a tree.
He took a sip from the water bag hanging from his waist and took a deep breath as he leaned back against the tree.
After closing his eyes and muttering bad words about the cold weather, he opened them again and saw two wolves.
He knew these children, he had met them before. He was proud of himself that he didn’t jump with fright and smiled normally. But his heart beat extremely fast for a few seconds.
Before Eren could do anything, the talkative wolf girl came to him and greeted him. She looked like a big friendly dog with her tongue hanging out of her mouth and her tail wagging.
"Hirrr. Good to see you, Dwarf. How are you?"
"I am good. But I need to find a place to hunt. It is now impossible to level up by killing these Slimes."
After some hesitation, Eren started playing with the fur of this huge pup.
"Actually, it’s our little secret, but you can come hunting with us if you want." The other wolf, quieter, came closer this time. As much as he didn’t seem to care, he was close enough for Eren to let him pat his head. The silent wolf lowered its head and wagged its happy tail as it was loved.
They really acted like dogs and Eren could see how ancient humans domesticated wolves now. "Both are just children in need of love. Without each other, they would be very lonely. They are abandoned by their families."
Eren knew that the wolves in this world were of the beast class and that they would actually have no problem living alone. In fact, wolves were probably the most dangerous, if not the strongest, species in this forest for low-level territory like this one.
After all, the other monsters might have been very powerful, but they were few in number and they all lived in their own regions. But wolves were a breed that constantly reproduced and could fight in packs. Baby wolves said that whenever the mothers of the pack wanted, the wolves in the whole forest would come together and fight.
"Let’s go then."
Eren didn’t know where these two little wolves were taking him. Moreover, he was going into the forest again, and he forgot to inform Emily again.
After walking for half an hour, the group of two wolves and a self-claimed dwarf entered a small flower garden. It was a place entirely surrounded by weeds, vines and tall trees, but inside was full of flowers.
"Hırr".
[I thought it would be nice to sleep here. Then we went inside and found a strange cave. There are some very tasty creatures in it]
Eren didn’t even look at her mouth to understand her. The magical language of Beastin was a full experience. It felt fantastic to know that you are capable of talking with animals.
"Tasteful creatures?" He didn’t know what it could be.
The talkative wolf wanted very much to describe the image in her head. But she was still very young and couldn’t explain what she had seen in the cave.
But thanks to the sense she conveyed while communicating, Eren was able to understand that the cave wasn’t dangerous.
"Let’s go in then."
The trio entered the area where the flowers were most intense and saw a small alcove between a huge ivy and a tree. As he descended by the thick roots of the tree, Eren involuntarily thought that this place might not have formed naturally.
The thought frightened him a little. He hoped that the creature that had dug here had already gone away or died.
It was a tunnel wide enough for a human and two wolves to descend at the same time. If a creature dug this place, it must have been something massive like a truck, at three to four meters tall.
As he descended a little further, a strange sizzling sound came from afar. It was so high-pitched that Eren looked forward to seeing this animal. But as they went a little deeper, everything became dark.
Looking at the wolves still walking, Eren hastily stopped them.
"Can you see in the dark?"
"Hurrr.." [Of course. Can’t you see?]
Eren was going to instinctively shake his head, but he restrained himself and said "no".
[Do you want me to teach?]
Eren couldn’t quite understand what it meant because the sentence he heard was an automatic language translation created by the feelings of wolves.
He thought the wolf wanted to explain something to him first. But the next time the wolf asked, the part of his head that knew the Beastin Language got it right this time.
"Can you teach me a skill? Beasts can do that?" Even the possibility was exciting.
The wolves looked at each other in the darkness. Then they remembered Eren’s story: an orphan cast out by his family. After the tragic past he’d described, it made sense that he knew so little about monsters.
To these baby beasts, his ignorance didn’t look suspicious but on the contrary, it looked heartbreaking.
Eren was both delighted and excited. According to Emily’s theory, Evon Universe saw him as a beast and a human at the same time. If he was leveling up like monsters, maybe he was allowed to do things that monster species and beasts could do.
The quieter male pup raised its head, asking Eren to touch it. Then it warned with a low howl.
[Unless you’re a master at the skill, there are limits to sharing it. When they are shared, they pass to the learner at their lowest level. Our mothers gave us the skills before kicking us outside.]
Eren nodded and ignored the sad implications behind the message for now. From a different side, it looked logical to some degree. It would be absurd if a creature could bestow its strongest ability at max level to hundreds of its children.
The Evon Universe, unlike the absurd stuff in movies and books, was bound by a very stable and carefully crafted chain of rules. There was no easy way to get stronger in the system.
Eren’s case was a strange exception. If he was like other elves, he wouldn’t be able to kill that first level 3 slime and would be killed by it. There was no other chance.
The black wolf waiting next to him demanded that Eren bow. Then it placed its own head on Eren’s forehead and waited for a few seconds.
Eren looked carefully and saw a strange glint in the wolf’s eyes. The same Evon System color of panel, sky blue was shining in the cornea.
Probably the wolf was selecting something on its panel right now. Maybe the system didn’t ask the wolves questions like "do you approve?" It should be simpler and more natural for animals or smarter beasts. Even if it was slightly different, the system still worked for all creatures.
[Warning! Wolf 961 wants to teach you a skill. Do you agree?]
For the first time, Eren had a clue about the number of wolves in the forest. And knowing that tens of new ones like these two were released into the forest every month wasn’t nice. There must be at least a thousand wolves capable of hunting level 5-10 monsters around the Elven village!
He answered immediately.
"I agree."
Eren felt a small tingling in his head. Then he heard the classic system voice in his head and smiled.
[Congratulations! You learned the Wolf Eyes]
As soon as the tingling in his head subsided, the darkness began to subside for Eren.
It was a feeling as if he had been in a dark environment for hours and his eyes were completely accustomed to this all-devouring black color. But not only in the dark, but in general his view range and the details he could understand increased.
Eren didn’t know that elves, or any non-monster species couldn’t interact with creatures in this way. It wasn’t suppose to happen.
Emily told him that creatures evolved and acquired abilities differently. But she only knew as much as her mother had told her.
Eren whispered "skills" and saw what had just been added to the skill panel.
[Wolf Eyes - Passive Skill (First Evolution League)]
-Allows a wolf to see better. Make the fast-moving things in slower sight.
Side Effects: Users may have trouble with their own perception of time and space while looking at fast moving objects.
Evolutionary Conditions: Eat two Moist-Kurz flowers soaked in blood of any Level 20 Wolf Type Beast]
He was expecting a skill like Dark Vision or something similar. But having an impressive skill that developed his eyes in fast moving combat was much better.
"Thank you. Let’s take a look at those creatures you mentioned."
Eren followed the two innocent wolves waving their tails happily, and they finally found the source of the high-pitched sounds. There were countless bat-like creatures on the walls and ceiling of the cave inside.
They were black in color and hung on the wall and ceiling just like the bats on Earth. But everything else was different. These were hairier and larger. Their strange arms wrapped tightly around their bodies.
But the biggest difference was probably the fact that they didn’t have wings.
Bats without wings...
"Can they even fly?" Eren spoke to the wolves with a low growl.
[No.] The female wolf replied with an excited jump.
The low-voiced wolf had hardly spoken since they had entered this cave. Seeing Eren look at him and about to talk, he snarled. [If we talk too much, they will wake up!]
They waited and watched the sleeping creatures in silence for a short time.
Eren guessed that the creatures in this cave had gone through a different process of evolution from the Earth’s bats. Also, their lack of flying abilities was a bit strange.
But he was excited and didn’t care about the details. As he lifted the knife in his hand and held it tightly, he barked at the wolves in an extremely low voice. "Let’s hunt."
[YES!]
[Hunt!]
