I Faked My Death—Now I Have to Tame the Crazy Men I Left Behind-Chapter 33 - 31: The Ex-Husband Has Arrived, Everyone Get Out of the Way
Seeing the name on the screen, Mia Grant looked utterly horrified and, without a word, flung her phone a good ten feet away.
’Just my luck!’
’How could it be Yates Donovan!’
’How could it possibly be Yates Donovan!’
’Her brain had practically shut down from her fever, so how did she still remember Yates Donovan’s number?’
’She barely knew the guy!’
Ten minutes later, Mia Grant was still shaken.
A maid, hearing the commotion, had just come in and retrieved the phone for her.
Mia Grant took a deep breath, cautiously peeked her eyes open, and unlocked her phone.
On the screen, Yates Donovan’s name was displayed prominently in the chat window.
Since she hadn’t replied, he had sent a question mark.
’He’s asking who I am.’
Hiss.
Mia Grant’s hand hovered over the "Block" button.
’If I just block him, Yates Donovan will definitely get suspicious.’
’She remembered that in the original novel, Yates Donovan was one of the most intelligent characters.’
’If Kian Keller specialized in overt strategies, Silas Grant was the master of covert intrigue.’
’Then Yates Donovan must be a combination of the two.’
’He was a complete enigma!’
’Impossible to figure out.’
With a sigh, Mia Grant typed back: [Sorry, I really did dial the wrong number. I thought you were my friend.]
Fish: [I wasn’t asking about that.]
Mia Grant copied him and sent a question mark.
Fish: [Didn’t we agree to introduce ourselves? I’m Yates Donovan.]
[Now, it’s your turn to introduce yourself.]
...
Dead silence.
Complete and utter silence.
’See? It’s just as she thought. There’s always a bigger fish... and beyond every lunatic, there’s an even crazier one.’
’And she was talking about Yates Donovan.’
Mia Grant randomly typed a name: [My name is Jacob Lee.]
Fish: [Oh, hello there, Jacob, sis.]
[Handshake.jpg]
Kitty: [...]
’Chatting with him felt like her vision was blacking out again and again.’
’Fuck, I’m speechless.’
Even though she knew how unhinged Yates Donovan was from reading the original novel, experiencing it firsthand still made her want to curse him out.
Fish: [Why’d you stop talking, Jacob, sis?]
Mia Grant’s fingers flew across the keyboard, typing and deleting a stream of curses until all that remained was an ellipsis.
Mia Grant scoffed and mimicked his tone: [Hello there, Yates, sis.]
[Why would you think the name Yates belongs to a girl?]
[Then how did you figure the name Jacob Lee belongs to a girl?] Mia threw the question back at him.
Fish: [A woman’s intuition.]
Mia Grant completely lost the will to talk to him. After another apology, she suggested they part ways and delete each other as contacts.
Fish: [It’s okay. Since we’ve already added each other, let’s just be friends.]
Kitty: [We don’t know each other well. I don’t think that’s necessary.]
Fish: [I even know your name is Jacob Lee. Doesn’t that mean we’re familiar?]
’Fine, fine, fine.’ Mia Grant sent back a smiling emoji, tossed her phone aside, and resolved to ignore him completely.
But on his end, Yates Donovan was persistent.
Her phone wouldn’t stop vibrating as messages continued to flood in.
"Hiss. How did I not realize he was such a chatterbox before!"
Mia Grant opened her phone and saw Yates Donovan asking for her address.
[Jacob, sis, where are you in the country?]
[When I get back to the country, we can meet up IRL~]
’That tilde was practically dancing off the screen. It seemed so sleazy.’
Mia Grant gave him the name of a random, remote city. Sifting through his nonsense, she found a key point and asked, [Are you living abroad?]
[On vacation.]
She seized the opportunity to ask: [So when are you coming back?]
[Maybe in the next day or two. There’s some urgent business, and I can’t find anyone to take care of it for me. I’ll have to go back and handle it myself.]
Mia Grant’s curiosity was piqued as she read on.
[My fiancée died. I’m going back to dig up her ashes, mix them into some coffee, and serve it to my arch-nemesis.]
Two seconds later, a system notification appeared: [The user has retracted a message.]
Kitty: [Dude, are you okay??????]
Fish: [Typo just now. My fiancé died. I’m going to bring him back.]
Mia Grant hastily retracted her message as well, gritting her teeth as she typed a new one: [You’re so devoted, Yates, sis.]
[Thumbs_up.jpg]
Fish: [But of course. I’m all about pure love.]
’Aaaah!’ Mia Grant screamed silently.
’I’m calling the police!!!’
’The other male leads’ issues were at least manageable. Compared to Yates Donovan, they were sane enough to be discharged from the asylum immediately!’
’Their craziness at least had an origin; you could make an attempt at treating the symptoms. But Yates Donovan’s insanity... it was just completely out of the blue!’
’He and the other male leads didn’t even seem to belong in the same story!’
’It felt like his body was on Earth, but his brain was in outer space.’
After just ten minutes of chatting with him, Mia Grant felt her own mental fortitude, once solid as a fortress, begin to crumble.
’She finally knew what her future career would be. Once she got out of this world, she was going to apply for a job at a psychiatric hospital.’
’She might only be eighteen, but with her experience, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to aim for the director’s position, would it!’
Ever since learning that Yates Donovan was coming to dig up her grave, Mia Grant hadn’t had a good night’s sleep for two days.
She knew he was coming, but she didn’t know the exact time he would strike.
If anyone else had said it, she would have assumed they were joking.
But this was Yates Donovan...
’She truly couldn’t comprehend such behavior, but one had to at least acknowledge the thought processes of a lunatic.’
’She just wondered if the ashes the Grant Family buried were the fake ones she had sent them...’
’She’d heard her ashes were scattered at sea, but she didn’t know if they’d kept any back!’
’It would be fine if they scattered all of them, but if there was even a little bit left, and Yates Donovan used it to make coffee for Kian Keller...’
Hiss.
’Maybe they should just make Kian Keller a cup of milk formula instead.’
’That canister of formula shouldn’t have expired yet, right?’
—
After two days of rest, Mia Grant had recovered. Silas Grant said he would take her back to school after breakfast.
"What are you thinking about?" She had been distracted for the past two days.
At first, Silas suspected she was worried about Kian Keller.
’Had Kian Keller contacted her?’
As a good older brother, he couldn’t just confiscate her devices the way Kian Keller would.
However, the men he’d sent to keep an eye on things reported that Kian Keller was still unconscious in the hospital.
The Keller family had also imposed a news blackout, so it was unlikely Mia knew about the car accident.
’Or was it because of the marriage alliance between Kian Keller and Serena Grant? No, that didn’t seem right either.’
’Her reaction to the news that day had been indifferent, and it hadn’t seemed like an act.’
"Ah." Mia Grant poked at the omelet on her plate, then asked hesitantly, "Brother, my... um... it’s about..."
"Hm?" Silas Grant set down his knife and fork, his gaze softening as he looked at her, silently encouraging her to take her time.
’It wasn’t that the topic was taboo, it just sounded incredibly strange when said aloud.’
"I wanted to ask... about my milk formula..."
Silas Grant’s expression was one of confusion.
Mia Grant cleared her throat. "I mean my ’ashes.’ Where are they buried?"
The question was so bizarre that the hand of a nearby maid, who was pouring tea, trembled violently.
’There was no helping it. Mia had left before her own funeral concluded, so she genuinely didn’t know the location.’
’She’d made up her mind. If Yates Donovan dared to dig up her grave, she’d have no qualms about calling the police!’
’She’d have the cops stake out the place in advance, and then... in for a penny, in for a pound...’
’Time to give his crazy act an extreme makeover: prison-style!’
