I Can Use Myriad Divine Abilities-Chapter 35: Recruitment
Zhang Yuan stopped at the sound.
He turned around and saw a man in a sturdy shirt catching up.
This man appeared to be in his twenties, almost thirty, with dark skin, a fit build, and bright eyes.
He clasped his fists in salute and said, "Brother Zhang Yuan, I’m Chen Zhize. I’d like to talk to you about something, if that’s convenient?"
Zhang Yuan asked curiously, "You know me?"
"Just got to know you."
Chen Zhize smiled and said, "I’m also here for the patrol test, just like you, didn’t make it to the third round!"
Zhang Yuan realized, "So what’s the matter?"
Chen Zhize gestured an invitation, "Let’s sit down and talk at that teahouse over there."
Zhang Yuan thought for a moment, and agreed.
He didn’t sense any malice from Chen Zhize and guessed that the reason he was approached likely had to do with the elimination from the patrol test.
A large teahouse was only a hundred steps away from the County Government Office, and Chen Zhize took Zhang Yuan there with familiarity and ordered a private room, then instructed the waiter to bring tea.
After the steaming fragrant tea and four types of snacks were served, Chen Zhize bluntly asked, "Brother Zhang Yuan, since you didn’t pass the patrol test, what are your plans?"
Zhang Yuan replied, "What would you suggest?"
Chen Zhize didn’t answer directly, but asked, "Do you know why you got the top grade in the strength test and still got eliminated?"
Zhang Yuan was silent for a moment and answered, "Probably because of my humble origins."
Initially, after being eliminated in the second-round interview, Zhang Yuan was quite bewildered and couldn’t fathom how his second-round test performance ended up so absurdly poor.
But afterward, he figured it out.
It seems the three patrol positions released by the County Government Office were likely predetermined for specific individuals!
Since he wasn’t one of those chosen individuals, being eliminated was perfectly normal.
"You know that too?"
Chen Zhize was quite surprised, clearly not expecting the young and humble Zhang Yuan to understand the intricacies.
"I guessed."
Zhang Yuan bitterly smiled, "But what I don’t understand is, they could have just directly recruited people into the government office, why go through all this trouble?"
"This is a long story."
Chen Zhize poured Zhang Yuan a cup of hot tea, stating, "Simply put, this is a regulation of the Daqian Dynasty that’s been in place for a long time..."
Through his narration, Zhang Yuan learned that, under normal circumstances, any recruitment involving lower-level officials, including martial positions, must use an open recruitment and multi-round test process.
This has been ongoing for nearly two hundred years.
It’s quite a long-standing history!
However, despite the good intentions behind these regulations, the actual implementation leaves room for exploitation.
Cases like Zhang Yuan’s, where someone receives top grades in the first round but is eliminated in the second, are very common.
Nothing surprising at all!
"Those in the know understand, most of the candidates have some idea."
Chen Zhize took a sip from his tea cup and continued, "Everyone shows their talents, but then there are also some..."
There are also some who don’t understand the rules and spend a little silver to learn a lesson!
In his heart, Zhang Yuan filled out the words left unsaid.
According to Chen Zhize, these three patrol positions are basically reserved for members from several local influential families, and the eventual winner’s abilities won’t be too poor.
In Zhang Yuan’s situation, he could only start as a government official.
After working hard for several years and making achievements, or gaining recognition from someone influential, there would be hope to become a constable!
"Forget it."
Feeling uninspired, Zhang Yuan shook his head and said, "This path isn’t suitable for me."
He suddenly thought of a problem.
That is, if he actually became a patrol officer, he would then have added constraints, making it more difficult to search for extraordinary Genetic Bodies or hunt for Source Materials than it is now.
Thinking this way, his mindset relaxed significantly.
Chen Zhize sensitively noticed the change in Zhang Yuan’s expression and suddenly asked, "Brother Zhang Yuan, do you know about the Furious Whale Gang?"
Zhang Yuan laughed incredulously, "How could I not know!"
The two major martial forces in Linhe County, the renowned Fierce Tiger Gang and Furious Whale Gang, are known by everyone!
Zhang Yuan even knew that Linhe’s Furious Whale Gang is actually a sub-branch, although it’s an external force, they still control the county’s waterfront and dock businesses.
Those operating boats, fishing, dredging sand, and working on docks, most are connected to the Furious Whale Gang.
The Furious Whale Gang’s power is enormous, even their small sub-branch in Linhe County is formidable.
The Fierce Tiger Gang and Furious Whale Gang are like local serpents and dragon invaders!
In fact, the Furious Whale Gang’s reputation is better than the Fierce Tiger Gang’s, and the former’s forces never enter the city, minimizing conflicts with the Fierce Tiger Gang.
They’ve always stayed out of each other’s way peacefully.
As for what’s happening in the shadows, that’s beyond what a rustic youth like Zhang Yuan can comprehend.
His heart was stirred, "Are you perhaps from the Furious Whale Gang?"
"Exactly!"
Chen Zhize laughed, "Brother Zhang Yuan is indeed clever, those government officials are blind like dogs, unable to recognize gold inlaid with jade!"
Zhang Yuan became somewhat embarrassed by the compliment, "You’re exaggerating."
"Just Brother Chen will do, no need to be so polite."
Chen Zhize shook his head and said, "Brother Zhang Yuan, to be honest, my purpose today for attending the patrol test was to recruit talent for our Furious Whale Gang, not letting gold be buried in the dust."
"With your talent and strength, you’re just lacking an opportunity to stand out, and such an opportunity..."
He patted his chest firmly, "I can assure you, our Furious Whale Gang can provide it!"
Zhang Yuan had to admit, the plain-looking Furious Whale Gang member in front of him had quite the eloquence.
If it were other teenagers, they’d probably be excited by now.
Truthfully, Zhang Yuan was somewhat tempted too.
Military, government office, gang, and martial arts school, out of four paths to learn martial arts, three were closed, leaving only the gang option.
Now that a member of the Furious Whale Gang has approached him, it’s considered an unexpected opportunity.
But having lived two lives, no matter how eloquent Chen Zhize was, he wouldn’t be easily swayed.
After thinking it over, Zhang Yuan asked, "If I join the Furious Whale Gang, what would I need to do, and what would I gain?"
He didn’t mind becoming part of a martial arts group.
But he needed to be clear about his rights and obligations!
Chen Zhize’s spirit was immediately uplifted.
He wasn’t lying to Zhang Yuan; he participated in the patrol test to recruit new blood for his gang.
And with Zhang Yuan scoring top grades in the strength test, he was undoubtedly the one Chen Zhize most favored!
Seeing Zhang Yuan’s interest, this Furious Whale Gang member carefully explained the benefits and responsibilities of joining the gang, including the rules of the gang.
No embellishments were added, no exaggerations made, giving an impression of full sincerity!
