Chapter 802: Chapter 700: Qin Lan’s Reminder

In the laboratory, Chen Xin and Qin Lan were observing the laser weapon experiment together.

After being informed by researchers about the breakthrough in the laser weapon, Chen Xin arrived at the lab with Qin Lan, where the research team prepared this experiment to showcase their results to him.

In front of Chen Xin was the same laser weapon he had seen before, though it was evident that some improvements had been made.

Twenty meters ahead of it was a new combat subunit’s shell used as a target.

"Let’s begin. Show me the breakthroughs you’ve achieved." With that, Chen Xin gestured for the nearby researchers to start the test.

"Test of Experimental Laser Weapon No. 4, third damage test, target combat subunit shell, experiment objective: to test the laser weapon’s damage effect on alien organisms." The researcher, who was responsible for announcing the experiment the last time Chen Xin observed, spoke loudly: "The test begins!"

As he spoke, another researcher pressed the button on the control panel.

Unlike the previous scene observed by Chen Xin, this time the laser did not cause ablation upon hitting the target. Instead, within a second or two after the laser hit the shell, there was an explosion. However, it was small, only creating a hole and splitting the shell in two.

This made Chen Xin raise his eyebrows, slightly surprised as he looked at the researchers beside him: "How did you achieve this?"

"We changed our approach." Facing Chen Xin’s surprise, the project leader explained: "Previously, we used continuous laser to persistently irradiate the target, aiming to achieve material melting and damage through thermal effects. This was mainly our original research direction, using laser weapons against low and slow-moving targets.

But last time, Professor Chen, your words, especially the analogy of drying up the ocean, made us realize we needed to adjust our research direction. We are not dealing with small, slow-moving aircraft but with large, fast-moving alien creatures with strong defenses.

Therefore, we replaced the original continuous laser with a pulse laser. Initially, we intended to use high power density laser irradiation to achieve a laser cutting effect, but during testing, we found that pulse lasers can produce significant kinetic impacts at certain frequencies. So, we adjusted the machine to use this kinetic impact to damage the target.

This adjustment wasn’t easy, but fortunately, we had some research in this area before. After several experimental adjustments, we had the prototype you see now, Professor Chen, and so far, the results look promising."

After listening to the researchers’ explanation, Chen Xin nodded in understanding.

No wonder the team quickly developed a new experimental model. It turns out they had prior research in this area, and with a last-minute push, they produced this promising laser weapon in front of him.

Although Chen Xin felt this laser weapon still had some way to go before battlefield deployment, overall, it already showed great potential.

It just requires more time for research and improvement before it can be deployed into service.

"The results you’ve achieved this time are impressive, and this laser weapon is very promising. However, my suggestion is not to abandon your previous research." Chen Xin acknowledged the team’s achievements but felt there was no need to abandon their earlier research.

Even though the previous laser weapon seemed underpowered with insufficient damage during tests, it was still a research path worth pursuing.

"Rest assured, Professor, we haven’t abandoned the continuous laser research. It’s just that we don’t have enough manpower in our research group to work on both projects simultaneously, so we focused on pulse laser research for now." The project leader explained to Chen Xin that their previous research had not been unsuccessful and naturally wouldn’t be discarded.

Even if it lacks practical value, it will serve as technical accumulation, not to mention it’s also a promising research project.

Hearing this, Chen Xin nodded in satisfaction.

Although he had been stressed over the new weapon development, Qin Lan’s comfort and witnessing a successful experiment helped him alleviate the annoyance.

This left Chen Xin feeling relieved. Just as he was about to return to work, Qin Lan stopped him.

"Qin Lan, what’s up?" Chen Xin asked, puzzled why Qin Lan held him back.

"Aren’t you researching new weapons? This laser weapon is one of them!" Qin Lan whispered to Chen Xin, slightly excited, "I’ve fought in underground environments before, and this laser weapon is much more useful than live ammunition!"

Hearing Qin Lan’s words, Chen Xin was momentarily stunned but quickly understood.

Indeed, laser weapons are very suitable for underground spaces since they are non-physical weapons, eliminating the ricochet issue faced by live ammunition.

As for power issue or excessive power concerns, these were not problems for Chen Xin.

After all, laser weapons are energy weapons, allowing for adjustable power output, unlike missiles or bullets with fixed, uncontrollable explosive power.

Moreover, the laser weapon is not large and can fit into the Lynx assault vehicle that Chen Xin favored, creating a mobile laser firing platform to support troops in underground caves.

Thinking of this, Chen Xin also became excited, hugging Qin Lan and planting a kiss on her cheek before eagerly asking the researchers: "How quickly can you build another of these laser weapons?"

"Uh, well..." The researchers were somewhat taken aback by Chen Xin’s sudden excitement but promptly replied: "With sufficient raw materials, assembly and commissioning would take about three days. The technology is mature, so it just needs assembling. With 3D printing equipment now, producing these parts is convenient."

Hearing this, Chen Xin nodded in satisfaction and said, "Then please build another laser weapon... no, make it two. Include one like the previous version as well, giving you five days. Is that enough? Let me know if anything is missing, and I’ll resolve it."

"It’s enough," the researcher assured.
