Chapter 204: She Had Help

Aleman tilted his head slightly, narrowing his eyes beneath his futuristic helmet.

"You mean the Fruit of Corruption? Or the other legendary fruits?"

Wright shrugged. "All of them. But let’s focus on the Fruit of Corruption for now."

Aleman leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.

"Rare as hell."

Wright smirked. "And yet..." He tapped his finger against the table. "Can you count how many supernatural beings you’ve run into in just the last couple of months?"

Aleman froze as his mind flashed through the memories.

Oni operatives with superhuman abilities...

There was never a single one that didn’t seem to possess supernatural abilities.

Even some small-time criminals that had unnatural speed and endurance.

It wasn’t just one or two.

It was dozens.

The realization hit like a thunderclap.

Wright saw it in his posture... the way Aleman stiffened slightly.

"It doesn’t add up, does it?" Wright voiced with a low tone. "Something that’s supposed to be so rare... yet every damn week, someone new pops up with abilities."

Aleman exhaled slowly, piecing it together. "This has something to do with Oni, doesn’t it?"

Wright nodded.

"You remember the kid we took from the island? The one you protected?"

Aleman’s mind immediately went to Renji, the terrified teenager with the power to replicate objects.

His stomach tightened.

"What about him?"

Wright’s face darkened.

"He’s been replicating the Fruit of Corruption."

Aleman’s blood ran cold.

"What?"

"Yeah. The Oni had him locked up for months, making him mass-produce them. They’ve been using the fruits to strengthen their own people—and worse, they’ve been selling them on the black market."

Aleman’s fists clenched. It all made sense now.

The superhumans appearing more frequently.

The sudden influx of powers into the world.

With how rare it was to acquire any legendary fruit in Enders Light, only a handful of people should possess supernatural abilities in reality... and yet...

Now it all made perfect sense. The Oni were the ones responsible for the current status quo.

The Oni weren’t just recruiting, they were building an army.

And worse? They were distributing these abilities to whoever could afford them.

Aleman let out a sharp breath. "How many do we think are out there?"

Wright shook his head. "Hard to say. But from what we gathered, Oni’s been doing this for months now."

Aleman leaned back as his thoughts raced.

"That explains why their foot soldiers suddenly became stronger. That explains why even random criminals are appearing with super abilities."

Wright nodded.

"Exactly. But now that we have the kid, they should be stuck... being unable to create more."

Aleman’s fingers tapped against the table. He still seemed somewhat troubled even though his expression was hidden by the helmet.

"They won’t be able to further grow their forces now. Why do you still seem troubled?" Detective Wright inquired.

"The kid is an important aspect of their growth. Do you think they’ll just let him go because he is now under the protection of the law?" Alemam questioned with a disturbing tone.

"No criminal organisation will be stupid enough to try and go toe to toe with the law enforcement. I can assure you that the kid will be safe," Detective Wright stated.

"Don’t you think you’re being a little too arrogant there, Detective? This is no ordinary organisation. This is one with super powers that not even the law enforcement is equipped enough to handle. Should they come at you guys with full force, can you say without a silver of doubt that the kid will remain secure?"

Aleman’s question caused Wright to pause briefly. For a few moments, silence reigned.

"The supers may be powerful but they are not invincible. Your faith in law enforcement is a little too low, don’t you think?" Detective Wright voiced while rising to his feet.

"Oh, I don’t have any faith in law enforcement. Never did and never will. If you guys were so sure of yourselves, you would never have approached me with the idea to lead a task force of supers," Aleman shrugged casually.

"And what would you have me do about the present situation?" Wright sighed while turning around.

"I’ll take the boy under my wing, that way he’ll be better protected," Aleman responded.

"There are protocols, procedures... it’s not up to me... but I’ll put in a word," Wright voiced out while stepping towards the exit.

"One last thing..." he suddenly paused.

"We discovered a facility belonging to the Oni. Intelligence claim it was used as a supply chain," Wright suddenly threw a device to Aleman which he caught in mid air before it could hit his helmet.

It displayed a map and then upon zooming in, a massive facility on the outskirts of the city, tucked away in an industrial sector.

"It’s one of their big operation center. High-tech security, heavy presence of Oni operatives, and most likely where they’re keeping the latest batch of replicated fruits."

Aleman studied the blueprints and heat signatures.

The place was fortified... it wasn’t going to be a simple infiltration.

"Let me guess, you want to move in on it?"

Wright exhaled. "That’s the problem. We don’t have the manpower for a full-scale assault. Not without casualties."

Aleman frowned. "So what’s the plan? You want me to handle it alone?"

Wright chuckled dryly. "No, I’m not that suicidal. But..." He met Aleman’s gaze. "This is exactly why I need you to take that leadership role and assemble a team of supers. Because this? This is just the beginning."

Aleman leaned back in his chair, silently.

This wasn’t just about Oni anymore.

This was about an entire underground market of superhuman enhancements.

This was about a potential war brewing in the shadows.

And he was one of the few people who could stop it.

Aleman let out a slow breath.

"Alright, Wright. I’ll think about it."

Wright grinned.

"That’s all I needed to hear."

...

...

Minutes after Detective Wright left, August remained seated in his office at AM Coven, with their meeting still replaying in his head.

"Oni’s been replicating the Fruit of Corruption and distributing it."

August leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly.

Then, with a flick of his wrist, he pulled open his inventory interface.

There it was.

[ Fruit of Sin x1 ]

The small, ominous-looking fruit throbbed faintly, like a beating heart.

The first time he had consumed a legendary fruit, it had completely altered his reality, allowing him to extract items from the game and use them in real life.

It was supposed to be rare and the fruit of sin was even rarer than others but with this new revelation, an idea began forming in his mind.

"Would it be insensitive... to ask the kid to replicate it?"

The very thought sent a cold shiver down his spine.

On one hand, he could consume another one, further increasing his abilities.

On the other, he could make a fortune selling them to a select few individuals.

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

Would it be profitable? Absolutely.

However, even though he was a business man at heart, a part of him didn’t want to use the kid like a tool just as the Oni had used him.

’But this time it could be for a good cause though... and extra profits at the side... but ahem *cough cough* yes a good cause...’

August closed his inventory, setting the thought aside for later.

He had other things to handle before returning to the game.

As he stepped out of his office, Greg was already waiting for him.

"Everything alright? You looked deep in thought back there."

Aleman tilted his head slightly. "Just considering a... business opportunity."

Greg chuckled. "That sounds like the kind of thing Derrick would say. But yeah, I got the next shipment of potions scheduled for transport tomorrow. Should we increase the security escort this time?"

Aleman nodded.

"Yes. I don’t want another repeat of what happened last time. Assign two other super guards to accompany the shipment."

Greg gave him a thumbs-up. "Got it. Also, about that investment proposal from last week—some big names are still pushing to buy shares."

Aleman waved it off.

"We’re not selling shares. Not now, not ever. AM Coven stays under my control."

With that handled, Aleman checked the time.

It was time to return to the game.

Far from the bustling human cities, deep within the ancient woods of Sylvalis, the elven kingdom trembled under a new revelation.

A meeting was being held in the Grand Celestial Hall, where elven royalty and high elders gathered under the glow of ethereal blue lanterns.

At the head of the hall, Queen Isilfaris stood with silver hair cascading down her back as her golden eyes narrowed with concern.

"It has been confirmed. The monarch has escaped the Hollow Dusk."

A murmur swept through the council chamber.

Elder Vareth, a tall elf with ivy-like tattoos winding around his arms, slammed his staff against the ground.

"Impossible! That prison was meant to be eternal! Escape should be impossible."

A young scout stepped forward, bowing deeply.

"Your Majesty... we have reason to believe she had help."
