Chapter 106: Chapter 90: The Sword King Bestows a Sword, a Mission Arrives

But just as quickly, the aura vanished.

The skinny old man stretched and said, "These are this month’s resources. The Weapons are inside. Go pick one for yourself."

Three bottles of Elixirs sat on the table, their specific functions labeled.

The Qi and Blood Pills were for replenishing Qi and blood, the Qi Gathering Pills were for aiding Cultivation, and the Rejuvenating Pills were for Healing injuries.

Shen Bai gave them a quick look. Each bottle contained a month’s supply.

Not too much, not too little—just enough.

Shen Bai didn’t waste any time. He nodded, took the Elixirs, and prepared to head inside.

Just then, the skinny old man suddenly moved.

A Longsword materialized in the skinny old man’s hand, and he thrust it straight at Shen Bai.

The Swordsmanship was simple and direct, without a hint of deceit or feint—it was utterly righteous and forthright.

Shen Bai felt the hairs on his body stand on end as a sense of danger washed over him.

The Longsword at his waist flew from its sheath, coated in blood-red Sword Qi, as he met the old man’s attack head-on.

CLANG!

The crisp sound echoed through the resource room.

Shen Bai felt a searing heat travel up his Longsword.

Without hesitating, his blood-red Sword Qi split from one into two, two into four, four into eight...

In no time, hundreds of strands of Sword Qi filled the room, all aimed at the skinny old man.

But just then, the old man suddenly retracted his Longsword.

A look of confusion appeared in Shen Bai’s eyes. "What is the meaning of this?"

He wasn’t a fool. Even if it was the skinny old man, he wouldn’t attack someone recklessly within the Observatory.

The skinny old man tossed the Longsword to him. "No need to go pick one. This is for you."

Shen Bai caught it instinctively, his eyes lighting up. "A fine sword!"

A cold glint, like that of ice, flashed from the Longsword’s blade.

This sword was of superior quality.

"The swords in there aren’t worthy of you. This one has fought alongside me in many battles. If you carry it, it won’t be forgotten," the skinny old man said with a yawn.

Shen Bai asked, "Why give it to me?"

The skinny old man chuckled. "Everyone in the Observatory knows I’ve been looking for a new master for this sword. They all want it, but none of them are worthy. I’ve heard about you, kid. A sword is a tool for killing, but it should be wielded with righteousness. Your blood-red Sword Qi may look demonic, but it contains a brilliant, upright aura. You won’t tarnish this sword’s reputation."

Shen Bai continued, "What is its name?"

The skinny old man waved his hand dismissively. "A sword is a sword. It’s yours now, so name it whatever you like."

Shen Bai stroked his chin. "Seeing as it has such a cold glint... let’s call it Little Coldy."

The room fell silent.

The skinny old man was speechless. After a moment, he held out his hand. "Give it back. I’m not giving it to you anymore."

Shen Bai chuckled. "I’m just kidding, Senior. How about Cold Moon?"

The skinny old man huffed. "Now that’s more like it."

Shen Bai shook his head.

Although it was their first meeting, the skinny old man had gifted him a sword, and Shen Bai could sense the goodwill behind the gesture.

"May I ask for Senior’s name?" Shen Bai asked.

The skinny old man slumped onto the table and yawned. "They all call me the Sword King of Fenglin State. They’ve called me that so long I’ve almost forgotten my own name. My surname is Mu. You can just call me Elder Mu."

Shen Bai said, "Thank you, Elder Mu."

Elder Mu shook his head. "Like I said, it’s a mutual benefit. You’ll let Cold Moon’s brilliance shine again, and I’m giving you Cold Moon. It’s not a gift, it’s a transaction. But you’re a capable kid. None of the Landlords in the Observatory are simple folk. That woman in the registration office... don’t you fall for her tricks. She has a particular liking for young lads like you."

Shen Bai shook his head. "Beauty is hardly as important as strength."

Elder Mu waved him away. "Go on, go on. I need to get back to sleep."

Now that he had what he came for, and with Elder Mu unwilling to talk further, Shen Bai didn’t linger.

After leaving the resource room, Shen Bai went to his temporary quarters and changed into the Observatory’s uniform.

In the room stood a full-length Copper Mirror.

Shen Bai stood before the Copper Mirror, dressed in black.

In the mirror’s reflection, the black-clad Shen Bai had sharp, sword-like brows and star-bright eyes. He was tall, with Cold Moon hanging at his waist, giving him an unapproachable air.

Shen Bai stroked his chin. ’I’m actually quite handsome.’

After admiring himself in the mirror, Shen Bai hung the Observatory’s token from his waist and left the room.

’Time to get my department assignment.’

The most important reason for joining the Observatory was the Evil Qi, something Shen Bai certainly hadn’t forgotten.

After leaving his room, Shen Bai headed straight for the registration office he had visited earlier.

The beautiful young woman was still at the registration office. Upon seeing Shen Bai, she immediately shot him a coquettish glance.

Shen Bai gave a deliberate cough and walked closer. "I’m here for my department assignment."

The woman propped her chin on her hand, striking a seductive pose. "My name is Long Yan."

Shen Bai nodded. "Greetings, Landlord Long. I’m here for my department assignment."

Long Yan rolled her eyes at him. "Such a boring little fellow. Your assignment is already settled. Just head over to the Ding Twenty-Third Division."

The Observatory was divided into four major branches: A, B, C, and D. Each branch was then subdivided into many divisions.

The D-level members were all State Governors, with three assigned to each division.

As for the Twenty-Third Division, it was newly established, comprised of the younger generation recently promoted from the various Government Offices.

Shen Bai acknowledged her and left the registration office.

Long Yan watched the Longsword at Shen Bai’s waist and giggled. "That old coot really thinks highly of this little guy..."

...

Unaware of what happened after he left, Shen Bai followed the signs to the location of the Ding Twenty-Third Division.

The moment he entered the room, Shen Bai scanned his surroundings.

Inside the spacious room were two young men wearing the same uniform.

As Shen Bai stepped inside, both young men turned their gazes toward him.

"So you’re the newcomer who stirred up a whole mess in Shengyun County? The one Lord Liu personally recruited?"

The young man in the lead stepped forward and cupped his fist. "My name is Huang Guang. He’s Kong Fang."

Huang Guang was tall and carried a long saber at his waist.

Kong Fang was slightly shorter and wore a pair of gauntlets on his fists.

Shen Bai cupped his fist in return and introduced himself. "We’ll be working together from now on. I look forward to your guidance."

Huang Guang and Kong Fang waved their hands in dismissal.

Kong Fang’s eyes lit up. "Brother Shen, tell us about what happened in Shengyun County! We’re dying to know."

Shen Bai considered it. ’I’ll be working here from now on, so it wouldn’t hurt to share a bit to build some rapport.’

He was just about to speak when he heard the sound of approaching footsteps.

An Observatory member dressed in black entered the room, holding a Scroll.

"Since the newcomer has arrived, it’s time to accept your first mission."
