Chapter 3: Darkness and Odd element

The orb began to glow as Kairos carefully channeled his mana into it. For a moment, nothing seemed to happen, but then a moment later, a faint hum filled the room, and the light from the orb intensified.

It was red in color, and small red wisps of lightning could be seen dancing around the orb.

He didn’t know what element it was yet. It looked like some kind of lightning variant.

In this world, the line between nobles and commoners was carved deep into blood and heritage.

Nobles, even those with only a fragment of true bloodline, awakened two elements, one from their lineage and one fated to them.

Meanwhile, for commoners, even awakening a single element was considered a miracle.

Kairos focused more as the red wisps of lightning faded, and slowly, his mana started resonating with other elements within the orb.

Each person’s mana signature is different and has different frequencies that resonate with different kinds of elements.

As the red lightning began to fade, Kairos could feel a shift deep within him. His mana was still resonating with the orb.

The orb’s color started changing again. He focused, the red color of the orb started shifting and becoming darker and darker, transforming into a deep, almost pitch black shade. Intense heat radiated from it. Even the air around the orb seemed to fluctuate with waves of heat, creating a distorted, mirage-like effect.

The light stone started flickering, as if someone was turning it on and off continuously. All three people in the room were shocked. The atmosphere grew tense.

"It should be Gravity, right?" the Baroness thought, clutching her clothes, not fearing for the worst.

Meanwhile, his face also sank in. "Let’s hope it isn’t Darkness," he thought, flinching at the mere possibility.

The Baroness turned toward the old man, searching his face for answers. But even he looked stunned, leaning closer to the orb, studying it carefully.

After a long moment

"Congratulations," he said. "Young Master Kairos has awakened the Shadow element."

Multiple sighs of relief escaped from the room.

Their worst fear didn’t become a reality. Kairos was also relieved. Fortunately, his fate isn’t that twisted. What he feared most didn’t happen.

"DARKNESS."

The element of the sheer terror of humanity, a harbinger of misfortune. When the war broke out, "DARKNESS" was considered one of the most powerful elements of the world until the renowned dark elemental mages started behaving weirdly when the origin of new monsters appeared on the world ’Demons’.

And as the scholars expected, the ones with ’DARKNESS’ started changing. Their behavior twisted, and their actions completely irrational. They massacred their own comrades and joined the demons in their assault.

The phenomenon began being called "DEMON POSSESSION."

And from that point, those with "DARKNESS" elements, even those not possessed, were executed, and their relatives were put in prison and baptized, leaving no chances of demonic possession. In the process, they will lose all the power and the lands they held, along with their authority to wield mana, either sealed or completely crippled. Those unwilling to meet this end hurried to join up with the Dark forces.

Thus, seeing he hadn’t awakened that cursed element, the atmosphere relaxed, and everyone heaved a collective sigh of relief.

Also, the awakening process hasn’t ended. The baroness’s and the old man’s eyes shifted to the orb, which glowed with blue light and strange runes appearing on it.

"Master Kaelen?"

The old man’s face was solemn before he began speaking. "Your assumption is correct, Baroness. Young Master has awakened an element that hasn’t been registered. An odd element."

A sigh escaped from the Baroness. Still, she was happy. As for why she wasn’t rejoicing despite her son awakening a 3rd element, it was simple. Even Kairos knew it.

Odd elements, in simple words, are the new elements that haven’t been researched before. The world coexists with an unimaginable number of elements that are above human comprehension and beyond the reach of current human understanding and technology.

In the past, they were seen as a blessing, offering new paths for magic. However, as time passed, their complexity outpaced human comprehension, creating sigils for these elements became rare and often ineffective at the same time.

Leading to the ruler halting the development, saving resources for far better research.

Now, magicians focus on more common elements, as odd elements are considered nearly useless without sigils, making them a dead end in magical advancement.

"Young Master, it’s all right! You have your mother’s red lightning and your father’s shadow element."

"You’re also a self awakened," old man Kaelen spoke, putting a hand on his shoulder.

Kairos nodded. That’s true... with these elements, no, even if he didn’t have this rare element, with just mana, he would surpass his past life.

"Young Master, you really did a good job... drawing your mana signature," the old man spoke, looking at papers scattered on the ground.

A maid gathered them up before giving them to the Baroness.

Revealing one’s mana signature was almost a taboo, as rude as asking a woman her age.

Kairos could only watch in silence as his secrets were laid bare. Still, he reasoned, he would be living among these people now.

Depending on how things unfolded, their help might even prove useful. It wasn’t an ideal situation, but it wasn’t the worst outcome either.

And thinking again, he realized he also had to get the unknown sigil checked. And this old man seemed quite knowledgeable on that term.

The Baroness looked at the sigils, nodding to herself, before her eyes sparkled. She noticed something interesting.

Kairos watched it all. He also felt some anticipation, as without a doubt, those sigils will impact the way he leads this life. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

She looked at them one last time before passing them on to the old man.

"Oh incredible, Sigil of Tether." His words were cut short before his gaze fell onto something.

"Sigil of Nullification. Baroness, this is really the Sigil of Nullification!" he shouted out loud.

Kairos was already expecting such a reaction from those sigils, as that sigil is the sigil of the fourth circle.

It does what it sounds like. It gives nullification attributes to any given spell. Like, cast on a shield, it can make low-tier spells break down upon contact.

Also, coating this with a sword allows one to ignore the protective barrier monsters create from the 3rd stage.

’Dammit, check the other one.’

The two they mentioned, he already knew their usage. What he wanted to know was the last one!

The old man looked at the next page, glancing at it before frowning his eyes, then turned to the next page where the vague, unfinished sigils were, three of them, to be precise.

’Does that mean the other one isn’t recognizable?’ Kairos thought in some disappointment.

"Young Master, are these unfinished?"

Kairos nodded his head. "I tried remembering as much as I could."

"It’s ok, youngster. You’ve already done a lot. Let’s see if these old bones can recognize any or not."

The old man continued to turn the pages before finally, his eyes lit up.
