I Become Deathstroke-Chapter 569 - 531: Magic Ship
Elminster was truly old; he often fell into fantasies of days gone by, seeing friends who had passed away or places that had already been destroyed.
The ghost named ’Yesterday’ was something even the most powerful mages couldn’t escape.
He hadn’t personally adventured for a long time, so over the years in Shadowdale, he hosted countless adventurers.
Listening to their stories, giving them precious items, and then watching them set out on their journeys again, promising to meet again next time.
But the vast majority never got the chance to return.
Being an adventurer is a high-risk profession.
So the Elder Master turned his gaze to the Peng Luoke, those who traveled between different worlds; he found stories from other worlds to be noticeably more interesting.
There was a somewhat rusty mechanical body traveling mage who told him that in his world of origin, all life was machines; in his world, he was almost always fighting over parts or energy every day.
There was a traveling mage who was a barbarian, almost without language, and Elminster had to draw little figures in sand to communicate with him, and even treated him to apple pie.
Of course, not all traveling mages were friendly, and some attempted to rob the old man, but the Elder Master’s magic seemed instinctively at his fingertips; he beat them up and threw them beyond the Crystal Wall System, warning them not to return to Ferren.
Someone might wonder why Elminster knew about traveling mages, or how he met so many of them.
So one must speak of why Elminster was called the ’Great Sage of Shadowdale’ and not the Shadowdale Grandmaster.
It was the gift that the years had given him—a legend that couldn’t be finished in a few days and nights, involving many gods and people.
And now, Elminster watched the two new traveling mages, listening to the formidable warrior’s experiences.
Perhaps it was the early story of this warrior, when some ordinary people encountered various powerful undead in the underground dungeon.
A series of adventures where almost everywhere they went, they ran into powerful undead, yet the team had no priest.
"An exciting story, but... is your world so full of undead? Life must be difficult, right?"
He looked at Su Ming sympathetically.
"It’s alright; with guns and cannons, undead creatures aren’t hard to deal with."
Su Ming waved his hand, sitting on the window sill; while telling the story, he continuously observed the Elder Master’s micro-expressions, trying to analyze his thoughts.
But the Elder Master seemed genuinely there just to listen to the story.
During tense moments, he would slightly frown; when overcoming challenges, he would beam with joy; upon hearing about treasures gained and big money earned back home, he was as delighted as if he had earned the money himself.
There’s no denying, the Elder Master was a very qualified listener, and conversing with him was very pleasant.
Yet now, Su Ming could only confirm Elminster had no other intentions, but the Magic Goddess behind him was unpredictable.
Despite his thoughts, Su Ming maintained a full-faced smile while communicating with the Elder Master, even taking out his other handgun to show him.
"Some dwarf blacksmiths will forge firearms, but much larger than yours, and much rougher in craftsmanship."
The Elder Master was clearly familiar with firearms, and his fingers were very agile; his mind quick, he quickly discovered the function of the safety.
He randomly fired at something in the house, leading the servant to rush up from downstairs to investigate, shrinking at the staircase’s edge.
"My lord, please don’t conduct any dangerous experiments."
"It’s nothing, rest up, I just wanted to try out the new toy." The Elder Master, without lifting his head, ejected the magazine to inspect: "Hmm, precise structure, gunpowder and bullet form a single unit, a genius idea."
Su Ming smiled, took a sip from the bottle: "Want to hear my companion’s story? Her world just encountered an invasion by an evil traveling mage group."
Elminster became somewhat serious upon hearing this, returned the handgun, sat up straight in his rocking chair, knocked his pipe against his knee, his lips pursed due to facial strain, the angle of his beard indicating his displeasure.
"Beautiful lady, please tell me more; I swear on magic itself, if there’s anything I can help with, I’ll do my best."
He asked Ciri about the Wild Hunt’s invasion, simultaneously casting spells of Fluent Language and Artful Tongue Skill to gain the ability to communicate with Ciri.
Prophetic System magic often has a mysterious air, how to make someone understand a completely foreign language for ten minutes and then forget again, this logic is indescribable.
First, Ciri glanced at Su Ming, and after seeing a nod from him, she began telling her story from another perspective—the tale of her fleeing in the Infinite World.
Elminster’s expression remained serious; if Su Ming’s story was merely an ordinary adventure tale, then Ciri’s story concerned world-level issues.
A mad traveler mage group posed potential threats to the Ferren Continent.
Ciri didn’t elaborate much, only roughly mentioning the cause and process, finally explaining how her world repelled the invaders.
Yet Elminster’s focus was more on the method of crossing worlds by the Wild Hunt.
"Nagilfa, a ship forged from the nails of the dead... I seem to have seen something similar, don’t misunderstand, not nails, everyone has those. I mean, the magic ship, hmm, a magic ship crossing between Crystal Wall Systems, one came outside Deepwater City once."
Su Ming’s heart stirred—a magic ship, indeed, is also a method of crossing worlds, albeit a derived rule, not a specialty of Ferren.
Elminster clearly fell into reminiscences, recalling the winged ship he once saw outside Deepwater City during his younger days.
It was a completely green ship, surrounded by circular sails that looked like transparent insect wings.
On the ship were some people, a very ordinary mage, and a few peculiar adventurers.
Unfortunately, those people didn’t stay long; they just caught some fish on the sea, and then the ship dragged green magic radiance and instantly disappeared into the sky.
Because Elminster was standing on the cliff edge watching them, and they didn’t seem to intend to interact with the people of this world.
For a period, Elminster delved into knowledge of the Crystal Wall System, but he finally discovered that in the endless cosmos, the contained knowledge is also infinite, and beyond the Crystal Wall System, there are always unknown worlds.
Unless he transformed himself into a lich, seeking endless knowledge with a finite life would inevitably be fruitless.
But this did not hinder his interest in the magic ship; if he had the opportunity, he would also want one.
Therefore, he ventured to many Neserel period ruins, wanting to see if there were any similar records in the already annihilated Mage Empire.
After all, they invented the floating city technology, and it seemed as if taking one more step would allow one to traverse the Crystal Walls.
However, from Elminster’s years of research, this seemingly simple step was like a chasm.
The Mire Energy Core couldn’t achieve that extent, or rather, the elder master didn’t know how to accomplish it through Ferren’s magic technology.
He had no ideas, unless he could find a magic ship where he could go aboard and see for himself.
"Master?" Ciri crossed her arms, her face full of helplessness. She had been speaking for quite a while, but the elder master was lost in thought.
"Oh, sorry, young lady, old people always like to reminisce, hehe." The elder master wasn’t embarrassed in the slightest, casually changing the topic, "The person next to you clearly knows about the magic ship, but probably doesn’t know how to make one, right?"
Su Ming certainly knew about the magic ship; he had always been looking for a method to traverse different worlds with people or massive cargo.
He had long understood the preciousness of his world-traveling ability and knew that in a fantasy world setting, he and Ciri were both referred to as traveling mages, also known as Peng Luoke.
He also knew that here, Peng Luoke were inherently assumed to possess legendary destiny, essentially junior gods by nature.
But gods? Su Ming had seen plenty.
Su Ming traveled around ’buying land,’ yet he didn’t intend to play cards with anyone. The way traveling mages absorb power from different worlds and then manifest it can be a method for certain times but wasn’t Su Ming’s goal...
"I am indeed interested in magic ships, but as you said, I don’t know how to manufacture one, look at me, don’t I look like a brainless warrior?"
Su Ming spread his hands, showing the mage his heavy armor all over his body, and the door plate greatsword behind him.
Elminster coughed, as if choked by tobacco. A warrior, no doubt, and judging by the demeanor, a legendary warrior.
But brainless? Those without brains among the Peng Luoke had long since died out.
The elder master patted his chest to stop the coughing, looking at Su Ming appreciatively. This skill of speaking nonsense so brazenly was much like his own flair in his youth...
"For your world being invaded, young lady, I express my deep regret, but I’m afraid I can’t be of much help, as I’m not a traveling mage."
The elder master paused, turning to look at the small blue bird outside the window that was standing on a tree not far away, then continued, "But in Ferren, I’m not the only one studying the Crystal Wall issue. As far as I know, in the Forgotten Lands, the Zor’s school has extensive research on magic, and the City Lords of Shadow Soul City likely have some different perspectives, let alone those liches from the Neser era."
"If I find out how to make a magic ship and the materials needed, are you planning to go out and have a look too?" Su Ming raised an eyebrow.
Elminster thought for a moment, "I enjoy adventure; when I was young, I traveled across the continent and to many planes, including the Abyss and Purgatory. If there’s a chance, I’d truly like to see outside the Crystal Wall System, to know what our world looks like from the outside of the Crystal Wall System."
Su Ming pinched his chin, handing the elder master a cigar, "I can answer you now; it looks like the eyeball of a dragon."
.............
Su Ming picked up Ciri at the school gate, taking her on a tour of the campus, and only a few days had passed since he left.
In Ferren World, he spoke at length with the elder master, learning some useful knowledge, like the ecology of dragon species.
But the most valuable thing was the elder master gave him a large spatial bag and a pile of magic items.
Ferren specialties — magic scrolls and charging wands, low tier items usable even without the Magic Net.
After bringing those things back, Su Ming directly gave them to The Ancient One.
The Ancient One was very happy; she also loved unknown knowledge, though the entirely unfamiliar runes and arrays had energy flows that she couldn’t quite understand.
This was precisely what made them worth researching.
Watching Master Ancient eat spicy sticks while studying the Knocking Technique Scroll, Su Ming felt as though he was messing up Marvel.
But as long as The Ancient One didn’t plan to create a Magic Net to play around, she could do as she pleased.
Ciri had returned to the Wizard World previously to help Su Ming test a saddle bag, but sadly, the beautiful dream of storing items across worlds was proven impossible.
Fortunately, the spatial bag that Elminster gave could still be used in both Marvel and DC, making Su Ming feel that he hadn’t wasted so much effort talking.
The elder master seemed to be goading him to stay in Ferren for adventure, tempting him with magic ship knowledge, even hinting at helping him build a ship.
However, Su Ming did not want to deal with any mage council or a bunch of skeletons for now; he still wanted to go back home and farm.
