Chapter 337: Chapter 337 Fear

"Excuse me—did you see three little children? One with blue hair, one tiny rock baby, one with seven tails—?"

The woman shook her head kindly. "No dear, I only saw a ghost boy spinning earlier."

Alina’s heart clenched so tight she could barely breathe. This is my fault. I should have kept them together. I should have held their hands. What if they are scared? What if they are lost? What if something happened?

Behind her, Boo began trembling. Drake hugged him instinctively, both looking terrified. Luna bit her lip, her small hands tightening at her sides. Sable clutched his new doll to his chest, frozen in fear.

And in the middle of that growing panic stood Dante.

He did not even flinch. He did not rush or shout. He simply stepped forward with a quiet, controlled stillness that made the water around him seem to settle. His expression turned cold and focused.

Alina did not even notice when he moved past her. She was already speaking desperately to another shopkeeper.

Dante closed his eyes and took one deep breath. Then he opened them again, his pupils narrowing slightly, and without warning he dashed toward one direction with absolute certainty.

Alina turned sharply, her voice steadier than the babies had ever heard it. "Everyone stay together."

Her tone was not angry, but it carried a seriousness that made every tiny creature freeze. Even Boo, who normally floated around like a distracted balloon, drifted down beside Drake at once. Rocky, Kelpie, and Felix’s absence was suddenly too real, and a nervous hush spread across the group.

Alina inhaled shakily, forcing her voice to remain steady for their sake. "Luna," she said gently but urgently.

Luna straightened immediately, her small wolf ears perked and her tail stiff with determination.

"Make sure all your classmates stay with you, okay? No one moves unless you say so."

Luna nodded seriously, looking older than she was. "I will, Teacher," she said, gathering Drake, Boo, Vlad Jr., Sable, and Lucien close. She even spread her arms a little, as if protecting her pack.

Drake grabbed Boo’s tail for support. Boo grabbed Drake’s arm in return. Vlad Jr. crossed his arms like a tiny noble but still leaned closer to the group. Sable hugged his new plush tightly, eyes wide. Lucien stood at the back, pretending to be calm but clearly tense.

"Everyone stay together. No wandering," Luna commanded with her tiny fierce voice.

"Yes, Luna," they chorused anxiously.

Alina’s heart squeezed at the sight of them trying so hard to behave.

But she had no time to comfort them. Panic pressed hard against her ribs as she hurried to another stall keeper, her steps uneven.

"Hello, sorry, have you seen three children? One small boy with blue hair, one rock baby, and a little fox boy with seven tails?" she asked frantically.

The stall owner blinked and shook her head. "No dear. I saw some merman children earlier, but none matching that."

Alina felt her pulse race faster. She pressed her hand over her chest, trying to keep her voice from breaking. Where could they have gone? How far could little legs take them? What if they wandered somewhere deeper? What if they are scared? What if they are hurt?

Behind her, the babies stayed glued together under Luna’s watchful eye, tiny faces full of worry.

Alina let out a shaky breath of relief when Dante’s shadows curled protectively around her and the babies. The dark tendrils wrapped around them like a silent warning, making everyone nearby turn to stare. Passersby slowed down, eyes widening at the dramatic sight.

She did not care about the attention. All she cared about was keeping the babies close and safe.

But when King Corvus arrived, her heart almost stopped completely.

He rushed through the lane with long, urgent strides, Lady Maris close behind him, and dozens of servants hurrying after them. His expression, usually calm and majestic, was tight with shock.

"Miss Alina," he demanded, his voice strained, "where is my little Tide?"

Alina’s breath stuttered. Her stomach twisted painfully.

She wanted to cry.

While she was choosing jewelry... when she looked away for just a moment... they must have wandered off. Her fingers trembled as she pressed them together, guilt rising like a wave.

"I... I do not know," she said, her voice small and shaking. "I asked everyone if they saw them. Kelpie and Rocky are missing. And Felix too."

Lady Maris gasped softly and covered her mouth. King Corvus did not shout or accuse her, but the shock in his eyes made Alina’s heart collapse.

She had failed them.

King Corvus lifted his hand sharply. "Search every corner of the fair. Every stall. Every passage. Leave nothing unchecked."

"Yes, Your Majesty!"

The servants scattered at once, their tails flashing through the water like silver arrows. Even shopkeepers began looking around in concern, sensing something serious had happened.

Lady Maris stepped closer and placed a gentle hand on Alina’s arm. "Breathe, Alina," she murmured softly. "This place is safe. They cannot disappear here. We will find them."

Alina nodded helplessly, tears burning behind her eyes. She refused to cry. Not in front of worried parents. Not in front of her students watching her every move.

Behind her, the babies clung to each other anxiously. Drake hid behind Vlad Jr. Boo trembled and whispered, "Teacher, they are not lost forever, right?" Sable hugged his plush doll tightly. Lucien’s eyes darted everywhere, worried but trying not to show it. Even Luna pressed against Alina’s leg, seeking comfort despite her brave front.

King Corvus turned back to her. "Miss Alina," he said quietly, "where is Lord Dante?"

Alina swallowed hard. "I... I do not know. He was here earlier. Then he vanished."

A cold shiver ran up Lady Maris’s spine. "He must have sensed something."

King Corvus nodded grimly. "If Lord Dante is already searching... then he has found their trail."

Alina’s breath caught.

She pressed a hand against her chest, trying to steady the pounding that refused to calm. Her heart felt too loud inside her, beating against her ribs in a frantic rhythm she couldn’t control.

She really hoped he had found them. Dante was strong, sharp, impossible to fool, but the ocean was vast, filled with twisting corners and shifting currents she did not understand. Anything could hide behind those bright stalls or slip through a narrow passage without being seen. And her babies were so small.

What if they were frightened somewhere?

What if Kelpie was crying for her?

What if Rocky had turned into a stone out of fear and no one noticed him lying there?

What if Felix had followed someone by mistake?
