Chapter 671: Chapter 671: It Must Be a Coincidence (2)

"Dad!" Bailey Hansen also stepped forward. "What are you doing?"

"You’re not gonna tell me, huh? Fine!" Henry Cooper turned to Vera Wave, who was coming downstairs. "Vera, sweetie, you wouldn’t lie to Grandpa. Tell me, is Kris in trouble?"

The old man’s trusting gaze was fixed on her. She, not being one skilled at lying, was at a loss for words.

"He..."

"Never mind, I’ll tell you the truth!" Christoper Cooper stepped forward to help Vera out. "That boy drank a bit last night, got caught driving, and is still being held. We’re going to see Lucille to figure something out."

The old man, a veteran of the business world, was very perceptive and knew they couldn’t fool him. That’s why Christoper Cooper had come up with this excuse.

As expected, Henry Cooper fell for it. He furrowed his brows and cursed aloud, "That blasted boy! How many times have I told him? Don’t drink and drive, and don’t drive after drinking! How could he make such a basic mistake?"

Fearing the old man would get too worked up, Vera quickly supported his arm. "Grandpa, it’s all my fault. Please don’t be angry."

"Silly girl, how could this be your fault?" Henry Cooper smiled at her. "Grandpa isn’t angry. This isn’t your fault. Later, Grandpa will teach him a lesson for you."

"Dad," Bailey Hansen said softly, "we should get going then."

"Go, go." Henry Cooper waved his hand impatiently. "Whatever it takes, just get him out first."

Hearing that Kris was only caught for drunk driving, the old man’s worry lessened considerably. Drunk driving could be a serious offense, but as long as Kris was unharmed, that was what mattered most.

The three of them bid farewell to the old man, got into the car, and headed for the detention center. Bailey Hansen sighed softly. From the front passenger seat, Christoper Cooper turned to look at Vera.

"Vera, don’t take it to heart; it’s not your fault."

They had seen Kris the day before and knew roughly what had happened. Christoper was just worried that Vera might overthink things.

Meeting his gaze, Vera could read the concern in Christoper’s eyes, which stirred complex emotions within her.

Could such a man really be the one who caused her family’s bankruptcy?

"Yes, Vera!" Bailey Hansen reached over, took her slightly cold hand, and patted it gently. "Please don’t blame yourself. Christoper and I don’t blame you in the slightest. When something like this happens, the family pulls together to solve it. So please don’t overthink things."

Vera just choked on her words, unable to speak, and nodded silently.

A moment later, the car arrived at the detention center. As soon as they slowed down, reporters swarmed over and began taking pictures of the car.

Christoper Cooper frowned slightly and patted the driver’s shoulder. "Don’t stop the car; just drive straight in."

As the car drove into the compound, the reporters were blocked at the gate. Once the driver stopped, Bailey Hansen cursed in frustration.

"God knows where these guys got the news from; they sure have sharp noses!"

Christoper Cooper looked at Vera but said nothing.

Lucille had already made arrangements with the police. Without a doubt, this news had most likely been leaked by Nathan Leafcastle. The Leafcastle and Wave Clans were long-time family friends, and Vera was also a good friend of Nathan’s. Christoper didn’t want to point this out and make things awkward for her.

Vera was no fool and had, of course, suspected as much. She bit her lip and remained silent.

She felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning, she saw Christoper Cooper smiling kindly beside her.

"Let’s go in."
