I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 667: Chose the Wrong Person (2)
But why would Nathan Leafcastle say such a thing? There must be some misunderstanding. I just can’t believe it.
While Vera was still lost in thought, the car had already driven back to the Cooper family’s old mansion.
Tommy Taylor got out and helped her open the car door, quietly reminding her, "The old gentleman doesn’t know yet. I just told him that Mr. Kris is working overtime, so please don’t let it slip."
Grandpa Cooper was getting on in years, and people his age naturally couldn’t bear such a shock. Vera, of course, understood this.
"I know," Vera nodded lightly. "It’s late. You should head back. I’ll contact you tomorrow morning."
"Just call me if you need anything."
Tommy Taylor nodded. He watched her climb the steps, open the door, and go inside before driving off.
"Miss, you’re back?" Auntie Zhang, the servant, naturally had no idea what had happened. Seeing Vera return, she immediately welcomed her in with a smile. "Are you hungry? Shall I make you some supper?"
The Cooper family had always showered Vera with affection, and consequently, Auntie Zhang also took meticulous care of her.
"No, thank you. You should get some rest," Vera said.
Vera walked up the stairs. On the second floor, Henry Cooper had already heard her and came out of his room.
"Vera, why are you so late? Where’s that boy, Kris?"
"Grandpa," Vera quickly forced a smile. "Sorry, Grandpa. I was so busy I forgot to call. Kris is working overtime and won’t be back tonight."
"That rascal! His phone was off too. I was worried something had happened to him." Henry Cooper grumbled about his grandson, then turned to her with a gentle smile. "Girls shouldn’t overwork themselves; it’s not good for your health. Work never truly ends, so remember to come home early in the future... By the way, are you hungry? Would you like some supper or a snack? There’s that... what is it called... oh, the blueberry cake I bought this morning; Kris said it’s your favorite. It’s in the fridge."
"Thanks, Grandpa," Vera returned the old man’s smile. "I’m not hungry."
"Nonsense! It’s been ages! How can you not be hungry!" The old man walked to the head of the stairs. "Auntie Zhang, bring that cake for Vera—the purple one I bought this morning. And heat up a glass of milk for her."
"Alright," the servant responded from downstairs.
Henry Cooper turned back to her and patted her arm. "Go freshen up. Eat well before you sleep. Look how thin your arm is; it pains me to see it."
"Okay," Vera smiled in agreement. "I will. You should get to bed early too, Grandpa." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"I’m fine. Old folks don’t need as much sleep," Henry Cooper said, gesturing upstairs. "Go on now, get some good rest."
Agreeing, Vera turned and went upstairs. The moment she turned away, the smile vanished from her face, replaced by a profound solemnity.
Grandpa has always doted on Kris, and by extension, he showers me with affection too. If he were to find out his grandson was being held in a detention center, he would be utterly heartbroken.
Back in Kris Cooper’s room upstairs, Vera washed her face and sat on the small sofa, replaying the day’s events in her mind.
I must find some evidence to prove his innocence.
Closing her eyes, she earnestly replayed what had happened. When she recalled Liliana Davis rushing towards her, Vera’s eyes snapped open.
At that moment, Liliana Davis mentioned her father, and then Kris Cooper stopped her. Could it really be as Nathan Leafcastle said...?
