Chapter 658: Chapter 658: I’m So Scared

Thirteen stories high, Liliana Davis was certain to die.

Vera Wave sensed something and immediately turned to run downstairs.

"Vera!" Kris Cooper hurriedly followed.

The two dashed down the stairs, one after the other. Vera sprinted to Liliana’s body, and upon seeing her condition, she turned deathly pale and froze on the spot.

Staring at Liliana, whose head had been smashed open, the image of her father flickered again before Vera’s eyes...

It felt as if her body had plunged into an icy cavern; she trembled uncontrollably.

"Don’t look!" Kris Cooper pulled her over, pressing her head to his chest. He then guided the rigid Vera aside, soothingly patting her back. "Don’t be scared, I’m here."

As he spoke, he dialed the emergency number.

An ambulance arrived quickly, followed by a police car. Their sirens wailed through the construction site’s courtyard, creating an unsettling sense of anxiety.

Medical staff approached and examined Liliana. They immediately shook their heads; with such devastating injuries, not even a miracle could have saved her.

The police officer who got out of the car gestured to his subordinates, then walked towards Kris Cooper and Vera.

"Were you the one who called it in?"

Kris Cooper turned his head, and the officer recognized him instantly. "Mr. Cooper?"

The man was none other than Michael Freenan, the deputy team leader of the criminal investigation squad whom Kris had previously consulted.

"It was me." Kris Cooper nodded at him, glancing worriedly at Vera, who was still trembling in his arms. "I need to get her to the car first; she’s terrified."

Michael Freenan’s gaze fell on Vera in Kris’s arms, and he nodded slightly in understanding.

"Alright," Kris Cooper acknowledged Michael’s gesture. "I’ll be out in a moment." He gave a nod in return, then supported Vera as they walked out of the construction site. After settling her into the passenger seat, he leaned over, holding her and comforting her.

"There, there, it’s okay... Don’t be scared, I’m here... Vera, don’t be scared..."

Soothed by his words, Vera, who had been as still as a statue, gradually came back to her senses and hugged him tightly around the waist.

"Honey, I’m so scared."

Her father had committed suicide. After receiving the news, she had rushed over, only to find him lying by the roadside. For a long time after that, she had nightmares every night. What had just happened was like that nightmare replaying; her mind couldn’t bear it.

When Michael Freenan emerged from the courtyard, the scene that greeted him was Vera clinging to Kris Cooper, muttering softly.

He walked to one side with a frown, waited for a while, and then gently coughed.

"Sweetheart, wait for me a moment," Kris said, patting Vera’s shoulder. He stroked her head comfortingly, closed the car door for her, and then walked over to Michael Freenan’s side.

Michael Freenan glanced at Vera in the car before looking back at Kris. "Mr. Cooper, what exactly happened?"

"It was an accident." Kris Cooper sighed lightly, then briefly recounted the events. Of course, he omitted the specific details of his conversation with Liliana Davis.

After listening to his account, Michael Freenan paused thoughtfully for a moment.

"Mr. Cooper, this matter involves a life. I’ll need to ask you and Miss Wave to come with me to the station and give a statement."

Kris Cooper nodded gently. "No problem, but she’s quite shaken."

Michael Freenan pondered for a moment. "Let’s return to the station first. Once she’s calmer, we can question her."

"Alright." Kris Cooper readily agreed. Considering Liliana Davis’s death, it was impossible for him and Vera to remain uninvolved.
