Ruka stood in front of the French window, hanging up the communication.
Leberli, sitting on the sofa behind him, asked, “What did they say?”
Ruka paced to the desk, threw the light computer onto it, and answered, “Carl used a special communication device to send a message back, saying that she is all good and with Zong Fang.”
‘Click—’
The sound of shattering glass rang out.
Leberli looked down at the fragments in his hand, took a deep breath, and veins bulged at his temple.
Abruptly, he stood up and headed straight for the door. “I’m going to bring her back.”
Ruka watched his departing figure silently.
His hand tapped the desktop, over and over, eyes lowered in thought.
Actually, there was more to Carl’s message: Beware of the Federation.
Ruka was well aware of Carl’s background; he was nurtured by the Federation, funded by the Federation, and served the Federation. Yet, this same Carl warned them to be cautious of the Federation—what on earth had they discovered on the Southern Battlefield?
He lit a cigarette with his lighter, the smoke causing him to frown, and with two fingers holding the cigarette, Ruka dialed Angsi’s voice message through the light computer.
“Colonel, what are your orders?”
“Have someone keep an eye on the Federation Central Building, remember, report back to me immediately with any activity.”
“Yes.”
Angsi was about to end the call, but Ruka stopped him.
“Is it possible to use our equipment to send a reply to Carl?”
“It’s theoretically possible,” Angsi replied, then after a pause, the other end of the light computer fell silent for a while, and he couldn’t help but ask, “Colonel, what do you want to reply to Carl?”
Ruka picked up the photo frame on his desk, containing a picture of Qiao Suisui taken by a servant when she was in his secondary palace, standing in a sea of flowers, smiling brilliantly.
The man’s fingertips caressed the smiling girl in the photo, and he said, his gaze lowered, “Nothing much, go on with your business.”
Angsi acknowledged and disconnected the call.
The hang-up tone continued to sound, but Ruka kept looking at the photo.
—————–
At this moment, Anubis stood silent in the dim basement of the Federation Central Building.
He clenched a small detonator in his hand, a device powerful enough to destroy the entire building. Pipes and wires hung on the walls around him, emitting a faint buzzing sound, mirroring the humming in his mind.
His father’s every word carried undeniable authority, “Place the detonator at the designated spot, and Bi, put away your useless compassion. We have no way out.”
He tried to protest again, his voice slightly trembling, his eyebrows furrowed, “Father, there are not only our targets in there, but also many ordinary Beastmen, do we really need to go this far?”
His father’s face was almost expressionless, his voice cold and resolute, “If you cannot do it, I will find someone else to complete it. Do not let your weakness hinder our plans.”
“I’ll do it.”
In the cramped hole, Anubis pulled himself out of the memories, his fingers lightly touching the mechanical keys of the detonator.
Finally, he crouched down, took out a detonator identical to the first from his backpack, connected the detonating cord, set up everything, and pressed the timer.
After all this, he put on a hat, zipped his coat up to the highest point, concealing most of his face, and silently left, like a fish entering the river, blending into the crowd with his head down.
…
Southern Battlefield.
Carl and Zong Fang were persuading Qiao Suisui to return to the Imperial Court.
“I’m waiting for Anubis to come. We had an agreement,” Qiao Suisui replied as she looked at the two men sitting opposite her, not knowing when they had formed a united front. The situation truly changed in the blink of an eye.
Carl pinched the tip of her nose, gritting his teeth as he said, “If he were coming, he would have been here by now. We’ve been here so many days, where is he? It’s only you who’s burning with passion, busying yourself for him. Now that we’ve understood the situation, shouldn’t you consider your own condition?”
“I’m fine,” said Qiao Suisui, puzzled.
Zong Fang pushed up his glasses and coolly analyzed for her, “How long do you plan to sustain yourself on nutrient liquid? There’s no food that you can eat here. It might be okay short-term, but over time, your body won’t allow it. Do you want me to give you nutrient injections?”
Qiao Suisui pursed her lips, speechless. She knew Carl and Zong Fang were worried about her, but if she couldn’t find evidence to prove Anubis’s innocence and the Rebel Army’s, even if she spoke the truth, no one would believe her.
“Then what about another trip to the experiment base? Even if we could just get some documents…”
Carl, with his arms crossed, glared at her, saying, “It’s collapsed. We saw it with our own eyes. How can we go?”
“Then… then what about going back to Death Bone Prison to look for the Black Box? Wei Shou is so anxious to find it, maybe there really is key evidence inside?”
At her words, Zong Fang’s brows furrowed as he asked, “What Black Box?”
So, Qiao Suisui detailed the entire process of their investigation. After listening, Zong Fang was silent for a moment, then he picked up a dinner knife and cut open his own forearm.
“Zong Fang, what are you doing!” Qiao Suisui quickly grabbed his hand, only to see him smile reassuringly at her and then use the knife tip to extract a chip from his flesh.
The wound on the forearm healed rapidly the second after the chip was removed, leaving behind only the remnants of undried blood within the blink of an eye.
“I think this is the Black Box they’re looking for.”
Zong Fang inserted the chip into an aluminum converter, connected it to the projector, and before hitting play, he glanced at Qiao Suisui. “Are you sure you’re ready to see this?”
Qiao Suisui nodded.
Zong Fang gently touched the top of her head, then pressed play.
The entire clip was less than a minute long, filled with explosions, screams, and various harrowing sounds of the environment. The scene was so gruesome, it could only be described as a ‘bloody mess’—a true hell on earth.
Qiao Suisui was so shocked she couldn’t speak, and even Carl had to look away, unable to bear it.
“Play it again,” she said.
Zong Fang played it from the beginning once more. This time, Qiao Suisui paid close attention to the frame showing the dropping of the bombs. A blurry black shadow flashed across the sky; she asked Zong Fang to pause and zoom in on it. After the image was enhanced and clarified, the shadow was unmistakably a warship, sporting a very clear Federation emblem.
“We’ve found it… found it! It’s the evidence!”
Qiao Suisui was so overwhelmed with emotion that she began to tremble, her eyes red as she clutched Zong Fang’s arm. “With this, we can prove the Federation’s war crimes.”
Zong Fang felt it was hard to dash her hopes, but some things were better told sooner rather than later.
He took a deep breath to compose himself, then held her in his lap, fingers threading through her hair, the smooth strands slipping through his fingers.
“Qiaoqiao, what if I told you that the source of all this evil came from my father’s handiwork, would you despise me?”
Qiao Suisui started, grabbing his hand as she asked, “Zong Fang, what do you know?”
“On the surface, my father is the Prime Minister of the Soter Republic; in reality, he is a confidante of the current Federation leader, as well as the manager of the Scavenger organization.”
Carl, taken aback, asked, “So I’ve been working for your dad?”
Zong Fang glanced at him and said, “The Scavengers were his creation, originally meant to chase down and exterminate the Rebel Army, to bury the truth forever. But over time, they slowly evolved into the leader’s hitmen, doing the dirty work.”
“Then those people I was ordered to assassinate in those missions were?”
