Chapter 39: I’ll be over there

The next morning, Ariel woke up feeling like her entire body had given up on her. She was that exhausted.

"I don’t think I’ll be able to leave my room today." She mumbled and turned to the side, remembering how much she cried the previous night. "He didn’t think of me as a weak girl, did he? I only cried because it was too painful to hold it in."

She hugged her pillow and then heard a knock on her door.

"Come in." She responded, though she didn’t so much feel like seeing anyone. "What is it?" She asked, without turning to see who it was.

"I wanted to see how you were doing." Ariel’s eyes widened as she heard Raymond’s voice.

She immediately turned to see him standing next to her. He wore a grey suit and had his hair parted at the right side, something you don’t see everyday.

"Sir Raymond, what are you doing here?" She asked, surprised.

"You didn’t come down for breakfast and it’s already noon." He said, checking his watch. "I wanted to let you sleep more but I also wanted to take you along with me." He said and she tilted her head.

"Are we going somewhere?"

"Yes, we are going to attend a charity gala together." He answered and just like that, they found their way to the venue.

Ariel didn’t even know when a dress was prepared for her. She wore a grey gown that seemed to be a couple set with Raymond’s suit and her hair was styled wavy.

Though it wasn’t her real hair, it still needed to be maintained.

"Is there anyone I should take note of?" Ariel suddenly asked and Raymond turned to look at her. "Do you want me to act in a certain way to attract attention or...?"

"For the mean time, I just need you to stick with me. The Stein’s will be present." Raymond answered and Ariel caught on to what the situation would look like.

Neither of them brought up the issues of the previous night and it seemed like it was going to stay like that. But for some reason, it felt like they had gotten a little bit closer than before.

’It’s good that he didn’t bring it up, because I don’t know how to react if he suddenly says something about the way I cried.’ She thought and touched her stomach.

Thanks to waking up late, she couldn’t have breakfast.

As if guessing her thoughts, Raymond said,

"There’ll be food to eat at the gala." He said and she looked at him. Her thoughts couldn’t help but wander. Since when did he care so much about her?

They got to the venue. The place was dimly lit but bright bright enough to see the faces of each dignified personnel that was present.

There were round tables and chairs but most people preferred standing as it would be better to move around and make connections that way.

Ariel certainly wasn’t paying attention to anyone and went to the food table to stuff her belly. There were caterers there to serve the guests.

"Remember what I told you." Raymond whispered to her and she nodded.

Sticking to him didn’t exactly mean being joined by the hips, she just had to be in his line of sight at all times.

"Hm, these shrimps taste good." She mumbled and turned to one of the caterers. "I’ll have one more plate." She said and they nodded.

The so-called charity gala was just a means for the rich to flaunt their wealth and also look good to the public. The one organizing such an event must really pocket a huge sum each time in order to support his cause, whatever that was.

"I’ll be over there." Ariel said, pointing at a table. She meant they were to bring the food to her table once it was ready and they nodded.

From where Ariel sat, she could hear talks about the Stein’s family. It seemed they were not yet present but they would attend for sure.

"Oh, look over there. Isn’t that the young miss from the Stein’s family?"

Ariel was compelled to look as well and the lady she saw looked really composed and dignified like someone who walked out of a royalty painting. She was pretty with a proud smile plastered on her face.

’Hm, she looks a bit familiar.’ Ariel wondered but shook it off and looked at her glass of champagne. She couldn’t help but wonder. ’The Stein family must really be a mess. What did they do to Sir Raymond?’

The brown haired Stein lady, out of everyone present, quickly spotted Ariel seated at a far corner.

’She came here?’ She wondered, keeping her smile up. ’This should be fun.’

Deep down, that composed and dignified lady had an hidden side that was as rotten as a ten day old chicken soup.

"Now that the five most influential families are present, let the charity gala begin." The host announced.

"Wow, it hasn’t began yet but I’m already tired." Ariel grumbled. "At least they served the food first."

Someone took the seat next to Ariel and she looked, it wasn’t Raymond. Her other side was also occupied but it still wasn’t Raymond.

The round table for five had been fully occupied but there was still no sign of Raymond.

’What’s this? Isn’t there a table sitting arrangement or something? Why are they taking someone else’s seat?’ She wondered, not feeling the least intimidated.

She looked back and found Raymond beaconing on her to come over to his side. She had apparently sat at the wrong table.

"My bad." She smiled and stood but the gentlemen at the table didn’t like that she was leaving and held on to her hand.

"Why not stay longer? We wanted to chat with you?" He said and Ariel chuckled, feeling amused.

"Really? But you stayed silent all the while I was seated." She said. "Don’t know if it was because you were shy or anything but it was cute." She smiled and took her leave.

"She called me cute." One of them said.

"You wish. I was the one who talked to her." The one who stopped her said.

"Hey, seriously, are you arguing over a nameless girl?" The third guy at the table asked and the two exchanged glance before grinning.

"What? Just because she doesn’t have a family name doesn’t mean she’s less attractive. I mean, look at those long legs and those swaying hips. It’s not every day you get to see such a dazzling lady sit next to you."

They all watched her leaving as she intentionally swayed her hips and flaunted her gorgeous body figure.

"I get your point." The third guy agreed.

"You guys should have a bit of shame, talking about a lady like that." The fourth guy said to them and shook his head but he couldn’t hide the smirk that displayed shamelessly on his lips. It couldn’t be denied that she was amazingly beautiful.
