How Did I Become an F1 Driver?-Chapter 862 - 343: Qin Miao’s Classroom Is In Session
Don't underestimate the small time gap; it's just one corner. Accumulate these differences and after two corners, the time gap between Qin Miao and Zhou Guanyu could easily reach 0.1 seconds. By the end of a lap, the gap might expand to 0.5 seconds.
This highlights the difference in car understanding and feel between an average F1 driver and a top F1 driver.
"Also, why did you start practicing at Silverstone instead of Bahrain, the season opener?" asked Qin Miao curiously.
Zhou Guanyu settled into a lazy chair next to the simulator seat and, after hearing Qin Miao's question, stopped his recorder and explained, "I thought about it and realized the most familiar track in next season's calendar for me is Silverstone, so I decided to strengthen my strong points even more."
But Qin Miao said, "The key point is that what you're doing is not effective."
Before Zhou Guanyu could show any confusion, Qin Miao continued, "There's no need for you to practice at Silverstone right now. F1 isn't F2; you can't race in F1 with an F2 mindset.
F1 values driver speed, but ultimately it challenges each team's ability to develop the car.
So when F1 drivers use a simulator, besides helping the team collect data, the main goal is to familiarize themselves with the track.
You're already very familiar with Silverstone. At this point, don't think about anything else; just practice for next season's opener. If you score points in the opener, it will bring honor, won't it?"
Zhou Guanyu was listening carefully to Qin Miao's analysis at first.
After all, one-on-one guidance from an F1 world champion is something not everyone enjoys.
The best part is it's completely free, no expense at all.
But as he listened, Zhou Guanyu realized something was off: "Damn, you took advantage of me!"
Qin Miao said nothing, just glanced at Zhou Guanyu with a subtle look.
Zhou Guanyu immediately became compliant: "Please continue, please go on."
Qin Miao nodded with satisfaction and then continued to analyze some of Zhou Guanyu's shortcomings in detail.
Zhou Guanyu is actually quite a talented driver, with good long-distance and offensive capabilities.
But he's a bit of a slow starter.
Looking at Zhou Guanyu's data, Qin Miao noticed that Zhou needed some time to adapt at first, after which he could deliver speed that matched his true ability.
This is a bit of a problem for the team, as during practice sessions, Zhou Guanyu can't immediately showcase his full speed, meaning the team has to pause at least half a practice session, which is used for Zhou to get familiar with the track.
So after spending more than half an hour correcting some of Zhou Guanyu's details at Silverstone, Qin Miao said, "You still have a lot to improve on. My advice is to try different setups and under those different setups, try to reach the speed limit as quickly as possible."
"Why is that? And I noticed during your F1 races, except for those where track conditions change due to environment or rain, your practice speed is never faster than your qualifying speed," Zhou Guanyu asked curiously.
Qin Miao glanced at Zhou Guanyu: "That's because I've got Verstappen behind me, and Hamilton is also my competitor.
If you show your full potential too early, the others will see your speed. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Wait a minute, how's this guy so fast, watch the replay, oh! That's the way to take that corner, I'll try it next practice.
Then what if his qualifying speed reaches or even surpasses yours?"
Zhou Guanyu was taken aback, but thinking it over, he realized Qin Miao's words made a lot of sense.
No wonder Hamilton always seems to pull out a 0.3-second speed advantage from nowhere during Q3 of qualifying to secure the pole position.
