“Crazy murderer?”

Du Jing was this neighbourhood’s oldest tenant. She hadn’t encountered anything like this. Since Du Jing didn’t react, Tang Hanlu struggled to stand up, crawl to the door and make sure that the door was locked. Then, she could finally relax.

“Granny, do not leave this place! It is very dangerous outside! We’ll wait for the police to come!”

Tang Hanlu’s home was in this building, but she couldn’t feel a trace of warmth. Every floor chilled her to the core. This was not a residential building but a giant morgue. When she found Du Jing, her heart appeared to have found a sanctuary.

The room had welcoming decoration and calming light. It was like a cup of hot tea in the winter. It melted the frost on Tang Hanlu.

“Okay. We won’t leave.” Du Jing had Tang Hanlu sit on the couch. She poured a drink and placed it on the coffee table. “You must be so scared. Where is your family?”

“Your mother is still at work. She is very busy.” With the deformed children watching in envy, Tang Hanlu picked up the glass from the table. Her emotions were low. When she needed her family, her mother didn’t show up. The person who saved her was an elder she had not met before, Du Jing.

“Busy…” Du Jing glanced at the clock on the wall. It was almost midnight. The old woman shook her head. She took out a thick blanket and draped it over Tang Hanlu.

“Thank you.” The sweetness of the drink calmed the fear in her heart. Tang Hanlu’s eyes watered. She suddenly wanted to cry. It had not been easy for her to run up from the eighth floor.

“Don’t need to thank me. You remind me of myself when I was young.” Du Jing ruffled Tang Hanlu’s head. Her friendly eyes could see the wounds in people’s hearts. “You can stay here for as long as you want. No one will chase you away. You can treat this as your home.”

The deformed children studied Tang Hanlu curiously. They knew that they were scary-looking, so they gathered at the far end of the table.

“You can’t do this forever. You need to try to interact with the outside world.” Du Jing walked over to the kids helplessly. “The world is colourful and wonderful. You’ve suffered so much. I hope you can have a normal life and enjoy a normal childhood. Give the tenants who have harmed you a chance at repentance.”

The children sat at the table and didn’t dare to move. They were very careful. Instead, it was Tang Hanlu who responded to Du Jing, “Granny, do you mean the tenants here have harmed these children?”

“Yes. All the kids have innate deficiencies. I want to help them get used to a normal life. However, the previous building manager was against it. He tried to gather everyone to chase them out. He said these kids influenced the peace here.” Du Jing thought for a while. “The previous building manager had the surname Fu. He was arrogant and stubborn. I prefer the new manager. I think his surname is Han. He is a young man. What was his name… Why can’t I remember?” Du Jing massaged her temples. Once she tried to use her brain, wrinkles would appear on her face, aging her tremendously. “I’m getting too old. Stay here. I’ll go take my medicine.”

After the old lady left, Tang Hanlu sat at the table. The children stared at her, and she stared at them. Moments later, a little girl carefully approached her. She placed a little boat folded from an old newspaper before her. “Play. Fun. Give…”

“Thank you.” Tang Hanlu didn’t intend to interact with the kids. She was there to avoid danger. However, after spending some time there, she realised that despite their appearances, the children had very pure hearts.

Du Jing didn’t return. She took a long time. Tang Hanlu played with the kids. She started to get to know them. She learned that the kids had no names and only numbers. She gave them cute nicknames based on their personalities. Most of the kids loved to play Tang Hanlu, but there was one exception. A child’s wheelchair was parked by the window. A boy who had lost his legs and one eye watched Tang Hanly coolly.

His number was 0002. No matter how hard Tang Hanlu tried, the boy would only say one thing: “They will come back to find it. I hope you won’t regret it then.”

Tang Hanlu was a bit scared of the kid. She tried to move away from him, but the boy’s gaze stuck to her.

The clock chimed at midnight. At the same time, Tang Hanlu’s mother’s phone rang. It was her mother’s colleague, Lee Xinqian.

“Is mom coming to fetch me?” Tang Hanlu shoved the playing kids to the side. She answered the phone excitedly. Her mother’s voice didn’t appear. Instead, the man called Lee Xinqian warned her harshly.

“The criminal who kidnapped Ah Fang has appeared! His target is No. 2! Tell me now. What is around you?”

“What are you talking about?” Tang Hanlu was disappointed. She thought it was her mom.

“We can’t find you in the lab! Answer me! Which layer nightmare have you fallen to?” Lee Xinqian’s voice became distorted. A few seconds later, the call ended.

“Which layer nightmare?” Tang Hanlu’s mind wavered. Two forces fought around her.

The phone rang again. This time, it was Ghost, or No. 0, who called her mother. She answered the call, and the lights in the room dimmed. Tang Hanlu heard the voice clearly. “Go back to your room!”

The voice carried murderous intent and intense presence. Du Jing’s home was affected. The warm atmosphere was shattered. Bloodstains appeared on the walls. The children started to scream and cry. Some started to convulse. It was very dangerous. Du Jing hurried out of the bedroom. She carried the ill children. “This is bad. We need to hurry to the hospital!” 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

“No. There is a murderer outside!”

Blood spread through the room. Cracks appeared. The room became blurry. A giant force wanted to yank Tang Hanlu out, but it was stopped by an opposing force.

The two forces collided until Du Jing’s room door flew open.

With bloody palms, the young man outside the door had his head lowered, and his face paled. “Despite the distance, they can still affect me. Unmentionables are stronger than Dream Ghosts.”

“The crazed killer is here!” Tang Hanlu screamed.

Du Jing handed the sick kids to Tang Hanlu. She grabbed the mop. “Take the kids and leave. I’ll buy some time for you!”

Du Jing wanted to sacrifice herself to buy time. She charged at the young man. “Run! Take the kids and run!”

Tang Hanlu reacted. She didn’t bring any kids with her. While Du Jing tangled with the man, she ran out the door on her own.
