Zara moved swiftly through the forest, the moon casting faint silver light across the trees. Her mind lingered on the map she'd found at the Reapers' camp. The Core. Whatever it was, it had to be the key to their operation.

As dawn broke, she reached the edge of the treeline and found herself staring down at a fortified compound. Built into the ruins of an ancient cathedral, its spires loomed against the gray sky. Guards patrolled its perimeter, their weapons reflecting the sunlight. Zara pulled the binoculars from her belt, studying their movements.

Two sentries on each watchtower. Eight more near the gate.

"Subtle as ever," she muttered. The Reapers never built anything without teeth.

Zara's pulse quickened, but her focus sharpened. She had one goal: infiltrate the compound and learn what the Core truly was.

Sliding her handgun into her holster, she adjusted the straps of her harness and crept toward the outer walls. Her fitted sweater dress and black leather gear blended with the shadowy ruins, making her nearly invisible.

A patrol passed close by. Zara flattened against the wall, counting their steps until she heard them fade. In one smooth motion, she slipped over the outer barricade and landed in the compound's yard.

The air was tense. Zara's instincts screamed that something wasn't right. She crouched low, moving through broken stone arches and fallen columns. Voices echoed nearby.

"The Warden wants her dead," one of the guards growled. "Says she's been meddling too long."

"Doesn't matter," another replied. "Once the Core activates, nothing will stop us."

Zara froze. Activate?

She peered around the corner and spotted a pair of guards entering the cathedral. Its massive wooden doors creaked open, revealing a dark interior bathed in an eerie red glow.

"This is it," Zara whispered.

She slipped inside, her boots soundless against the stone. The cathedral was a haunting blend of old and new. Ancient carvings and stained glass windows contrasted with metal cables, pulsing machinery, and floodlights casting strange shadows.

In the center of the massive hall stood a device—a pulsating black monolith covered in red sigils, its hum vibrating through the ground. Around it, Reapers worked feverishly, connecting wires and monitoring control panels.

Zara's breath caught. This was no ordinary power source. It was something far more dangerous.

"It's almost ready," a voice boomed.

Zara ducked behind a pillar, her eyes narrowing as a tall figure emerged—the Warden. His presence was suffocating, his trench coat sweeping behind him as he examined the monolith.

"Tonight, the Core awakens," he declared. "And Zara Kincaid will be nothing but a memory."

Zara's grip tightened on her handgun. Not if I stop you first.

She turned to move, but her foot hit a loose shard of glass. It skidded across the floor, echoing through the chamber.

"Who's there?" a guard shouted.

Zara cursed under her breath. The shadows wouldn't hide her for long.
