Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 1318: Story : Fevered Love
Tess collapsed just before dawn. π§πβ―β―π€β―π£πβ΄πππ.ππ°π
One moment she was trudging forward through the sewer tunnel, the scorched wedding dress trailing behind her like a ghost. The next, her knees buckled, and she hit the wet concrete hard.
Milo rushed to her side. βTess? Heyβhey, stay with me.β
Her skin was blazing. Sweat poured down her forehead. Her breaths came fast, shallow.
βSheβs burning up,β Lara said, kneeling beside them. βInfection?β
βNo bites,β Milo said. βNothing open.β
βNot all fevers are bites,β Ryder muttered grimly. βSometimes itβs just the body saying βenough.ββ
They made camp in a maintenance alcove, far enough off the main path to avoid the hunting packs. Tess thrashed in her sleep, muttering things that made no sense.
Milo sat beside her, wiping her forehead with his sleeve. The others scavenged what supplies they could from old med kits and ration boxes, but nothing touched the fever.
βSheβs fading,β Lara whispered that evening. βWe need to be ready.β
βNo,β Milo said. βSheβs not going anywhere.β
That night, Tess woke in a haze. Her eyes fluttered open and focused on Milo, silhouetted by a dim lantern.
βYouβre still here?β
βAlways.β
βI feel like Iβm underwater,β she said, voice slurred. βLike my bones forgot how to float.β
βYouβve been fighting too long,β he replied softly.
βI donβt want to die,β she whispered.
βYou wonβt.β
βPromise?β
He hesitated. Then leaned in close, pressing his forehead to hers.
βI promise Iβll stay with you. No matter what.β
Her eyes were glassy, but she smiled.
βYouβre still warm,β she murmured.
Then, like a spark in the dark, she kissed him.
Not desperate. Not panicked.
Just... real.
Even as her skin burned.
Even as the world tilted and trembled around them.
It was a kiss that said: Iβm still here. Even if Iβm almost not.
By morning, the fever hadnβt broken.
But Tess had.
She slept quietly now. Her breathing slower. Calmer.
βSheβs past the worst of it,β Lara said, feeling her pulse. βStill weak, but stable.β
Milo sat beside her, eyes ringed with exhaustion and hope.
Ryder passed him a small bottle of water. βYou did good, kid.β
Milo didnβt reply. He just looked at Tess and whispered, βShe kissed me.β
Lara gave him a small smile. βLove doesnβt ask for the perfect time. It shows up when you need to remember why youβre still alive.β
Milo looked at the wall, then back at Tess.
βI think thatβs exactly what she gave me.β
They stayed in the alcove for one more day.
Long enough for Tess to whisper again. Long enough for Milo to sleep. Long enough for the world, just for a breath, to feel human.
And then, as the lantern flickered low, Milo gently took Tessβs hand, still warm in his.
And held on.
