Chapter 1318: Story 1318: Fevered Love

Tess collapsed just before dawn. π˜§π“‡β„―β„―π‘€β„―π˜£π“ƒβ„΄π“‹π‘’π‘™.π‘π˜°π‘š

One moment she was trudging forward through the sewer tunnel, the scorched wedding dress trailing behind her like a ghost. The next, her knees buckled, and she hit the wet concrete hard.

Milo rushed to her side. β€œTess? Heyβ€”hey, stay with me.”

Her skin was blazing. Sweat poured down her forehead. Her breaths came fast, shallow.

β€œShe’s burning up,” Lara said, kneeling beside them. β€œInfection?”

β€œNo bites,” Milo said. β€œNothing open.”

β€œNot all fevers are bites,” Ryder muttered grimly. β€œSometimes it’s just the body saying β€˜enough.’”

They made camp in a maintenance alcove, far enough off the main path to avoid the hunting packs. Tess thrashed in her sleep, muttering things that made no sense.

Milo sat beside her, wiping her forehead with his sleeve. The others scavenged what supplies they could from old med kits and ration boxes, but nothing touched the fever.

β€œShe’s fading,” Lara whispered that evening. β€œWe need to be ready.”

β€œNo,” Milo said. β€œShe’s not going anywhere.”

That night, Tess woke in a haze. Her eyes fluttered open and focused on Milo, silhouetted by a dim lantern.

β€œYou’re still here?”

β€œAlways.”

β€œI feel like I’m underwater,” she said, voice slurred. β€œLike my bones forgot how to float.”

β€œYou’ve been fighting too long,” he replied softly.

β€œI don’t want to die,” she whispered.

β€œYou won’t.”

β€œPromise?”

He hesitated. Then leaned in close, pressing his forehead to hers.

β€œI promise I’ll stay with you. No matter what.”

Her eyes were glassy, but she smiled.

β€œYou’re still warm,” she murmured.

Then, like a spark in the dark, she kissed him.

Not desperate. Not panicked.

Just... real.

Even as her skin burned.

Even as the world tilted and trembled around them.

It was a kiss that said: I’m still here. Even if I’m almost not.

By morning, the fever hadn’t broken.

But Tess had.

She slept quietly now. Her breathing slower. Calmer.

β€œShe’s past the worst of it,” Lara said, feeling her pulse. β€œStill weak, but stable.”

Milo sat beside her, eyes ringed with exhaustion and hope.

Ryder passed him a small bottle of water. β€œYou did good, kid.”

Milo didn’t reply. He just looked at Tess and whispered, β€œShe kissed me.”

Lara gave him a small smile. β€œLove doesn’t ask for the perfect time. It shows up when you need to remember why you’re still alive.”

Milo looked at the wall, then back at Tess.

β€œI think that’s exactly what she gave me.”

They stayed in the alcove for one more day.

Long enough for Tess to whisper again. Long enough for Milo to sleep. Long enough for the world, just for a breath, to feel human.

And then, as the lantern flickered low, Milo gently took Tess’s hand, still warm in his.

And held on.
