Chapter 729: Am I not Mom’s child?

Charlotte Smith stood at the door, watching as the old man hurriedly pushed the wheelchair away, gradually withdrawing her gaze.

George Stephens sat on the bed, the joy from earlier lost, his large eyes filled with loneliness as he looked at Charlotte.

Charlotte walked over and gently hugged him.

George buried his face in her embrace and quietly asked, "Am I not Mom’s child?"

He didn’t understand why Charlotte’s grandmother would say "He is a descendant of the Stephens family" when the other half of his blood wasn’t from the Smith family?

Charlotte shook her head, her voice soft: "No, that’s not true. George is Mom’s child."

George asked again, "Then today, can’t I stay here?"

Charlotte fell into a slight silence.

"I promise I won’t do anything, I’ll just sleep obediently."

"..."

"Mom."

Charlotte pressed her lips together, lifted George from the bed, and picked up the bag of snacks that George had personally selected.

George held onto Charlotte’s neck somewhat helplessly; he knew Charlotte was going to send him back to the Stephens family. He couldn’t help but feel a bit sad and buried his face in Charlotte’s embrace, secretly shedding a few tears.

Downstairs, the lights were dazzling.

Charlotte’s usually frugal grandmother had turned on all the lights in the hall.

Ryan Smith returned from the company in a hurry, followed by two assistants.

Charlotte’s grandmother eagerly instructed the butler to help take Ryan’s coat off for dry cleaning.

— The family seemed to have forgotten how they once mocked this illegitimate child when Ryan first returned to the Smith family.

When Charlotte came down holding George Stephens, Ryan glanced at her.

Upon seeing George in her arms, Ryan paused slightly, noticing her holding a desolate-looking George and walking out, he frivolously asked, "Where are you taking him?"

Charlotte glanced at him.

Charlotte’s grandmother, sitting in the wheelchair, glared at her fiercely.

Charlotte withdrew her gaze, speaking softly, "Just going out."

To this half-brother "sister" who had no presence whatsoever in the Smith family, Ryan only knew she had given birth to Edward Stephens’ child, which caused a four-year estrangement between Edward and Daisy Ginger.

She was like air, trained to be silent and invisible. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

He felt some pity for her, yet he was annoyed by her lack of fight.

But he also understood in his heart, for the women of this family, there weren’t many other paths.

If it weren’t for George Stephens, Charlotte would probably have been forcefully married off by her grandmother for some business alliance.

He said, "It’s already dark, you really shouldn’t go out."

Charlotte lowered her eyes and said softly, "Thank you."

And still went out with George Stephens.

Ryan wasn’t one to meddle, seeing her leave, he didn’t pursue the matter further, ignored his grandmother’s solicitous attention, and took steps two at a time directly upstairs.

Charlotte opened the car door and got George Stephens in.

Feeling down, George’s ears even drooped as he sat hugging his legs, asking, "Do we really have to go back?"

Charlotte started the car, but not in the direction of the Stephens family, she looked ahead and said, "We’ll go to the supermarket to buy some more food, and stay at a hotel tonight."

"Mom?" Hearing this, George’s eyes instantly brightened, and he looked up at Charlotte.

Charlotte gazed at him tenderly, watching him smile, and softly said, "But remember, playtime is playtime; you must study well tomorrow, okay?"
