Chapter 650: The one thing you can’t escape is your own heart

Perhaps, what one cannot escape from is one’s own heart.

Daisy Ginger hung up the phone and looked down at Erin Ginger.

Erin stood beside her, with a face astonishingly similar to Edward Stephens, his cold expression tinged with a bit of unease.

Daisy bent down, holding Erin’s small body in her arms, and slowly closed her eyes.

She didn’t know why, but her heart felt somewhat heavy.

Feeling powerless against herself.

"Mommy..."

Erin softly called out to her, Daisy looked up at the child and gently said, "Let’s go back upstairs."

*

Ryan Smith seemed somewhat surprised when he saw her returning with Erin.

He was standing at the doorway smoking, and as soon as he saw her, he put out the cigarette and walked up to her.

Daisy asked in a low voice, "How is he now?"

"Just came out of the operating room, no major issues," Ryan paused and looked at her, "He’s in the ward getting a blood transfusion now, the doctors and nurses are inside. You can go in a bit later."

"..." Daisy didn’t speak, she quietly lowered her gaze and led Erin to a long bench to sit down.

The woman’s poised and detached posture made others hesitant to approach; her face, under the bright light of the corridor, was like an icy sculpture, devoid of any warmth.

She didn’t look like a friend visiting a patient but rather like someone coming to seek revenge.

Ryan didn’t dare expect too much from her now; her return was already a big favor. He was truly afraid that if Edward woke up and Daisy had already left Chicago with Erin, it would be enough to send Edward back to the operating room coughing up blood.

About ten minutes later, the doctors and nurses filed out. Ryan stepped forward to ask a few questions, then sighed in relief, turned back, and said to Daisy, "We can go in now."

Daisy said nothing, just stood up from the bench, holding Erin’s hand as they followed Ryan into the ward.

The ward had a faint bitter smell of medicine, with sunlight streaming in through the transparent floor-to-ceiling windows, casting the entire room in a bright, transparent hue.

Because of the quiet, this warmly decorated room somehow felt colder.

The man lay on the hospital bed, a needle inserted into the back of his hand, pale from blood loss, his slender bones clearly visible. He had his eyes closed and was unaware people had entered the room, his long, dark lashes casting a smoky blue shadow on his lower eyelids.

Emaciated, pallidly ill.

Ryan walked over to Daisy and said softly, "You stay here and watch him, I have to go back. Call me if you need anything."

Daisy’s gaze withdrew from Edward’s face, she lowered her eyes and responded softly before going over to sit on the sofa opposite the bed with Erin.

Ryan had a ton of things to handle and really had no time to stay. As he left the room and closed the door, he couldn’t help but glance at Daisy.

She sat there, delicate and quiet, beautiful as a flower.

He wondered how happy Edward would be when he wakes up and sees her.

Ryan slowly closed the door, exhaled, and as he walked down the corridor, his face turned a bit colder thinking about the tasks ahead.

*

Ryan reached downstairs and had just sat in the car when a call came in.

He picked it up casually, "Hello?"

"It’s me." Charlotte Smith’s gentle voice came through the phone, "Where are you now? I want to talk to you."

Ryan replied, "If there’s anything, just say it over the phone."
