Chapter 317: The last hope

British embassy office, 6.30 AM.

Patrick, who had not been able to sleep well since last night because of the many tasks waiting for him at the office, decided to come to the office early. Some of the security even got surprised when they saw Patrick coming.

"I’m not a ghost, why are you guys surprised like that?" Patrick joked quietly instead of greeting the two security men standing in front of the office entrance.

"It’s still very early, Mr. Davidson," said one of the security guards who answered Patrick.

Patrick smiled. "I still have a lot of work to finish as soon as possible, that’s why I chose to leave early so that all my assignments can be completed on time."

"You are too diligent, sir," another security guard praised Patrick.

Patrick chuckled. "Don’t praise me too much, i’m in"

"Please, sir."

Patrick stepped into the embassy office where he had worked for many years, in fact Patrick could have been a more promising ordinary office worker. However, because of his promise to Sandra several years ago, Patrick finally applied for a job at the British embassy in Spain. Lucky for years but never getting a recommendation to change assignments, Patrick himself also tried his best to stay in Spain as Sandra wanted.

At first, Patrick didn’t understand why Sandra asked him to keep working at the British embassy in Spain, but after Gina’s arrival almost two years ago, Patrick finally realized what made Sandra ask him to stay in Spain. Apparently Sandra had indirectly prepared Patrick in Spain to protect Gina if she came to Spain. Sandra demands Patrick’s promise to protect Gina.

After turning on the air conditioner and opening the rolling blind in the glass, Patrick landed his butt on the chair. The corner of his eye accidentally looked at the calendar he had circled since a few months ago.

"Oh, the 10th. It’s Gina’s birthday, I almost forgot," Patrick said aloud as he managed to remember the meaning of the red circle he made on May 10.

With a gleam on his face Patrick grabbed his cell phone and prepared to send birthday wishes to his goddaughter, just about to write a message for Gina when a number that wasn’t already on his phone list appeared.

Usually Patrick never paid attention to an incoming call from an anonymous number on his cell phone, but this time Patrick didn’t hesitate to take the call.

"Hello good morning, with Patrick Davidson. Can anyone..."

"Uncle."

Patrick immediately fell silent when he heard a very familiar voice in his ear, although the voice was faint but Patrick memorized it very well.

"My baby, Gina. Good morning dear, uncle was just about to write you a message. Happy birthday dear, congratulations on turning twenty years old. Hopefully as you get older, all your wishes that have not been used will come true soon, may your household well Massimo is always blessed with God’s blessings," Patrick said at length congratulating Gina without having the slightest suspicion.

Gina sighed, smiling when she got a birthday wish on her own birthday that she didn’t remember at all.

"Thank you, uncle," Gina answered quietly.

"What gift do you want from Uncle? Since you are now with Massimo, it would be very difficult if Uncle had to give a gift of the same value as Massimo gave you."

Gina smiled. "Uncle, do you remember where my mother’s grave is?"

"Of course uncle remember, that time you told Uncle where your mother is buried. What’s wrong, dear?"

"I miss my mother, uncle."

Patrick chuckled. "Why don’t we visit your mother’s grave this time for your birthday present? Uncle will talk to Massimo to ask his permission."

Gina’s tears fell when she heard Massimo’s name again spoken by his uncle. Her voice caught in her throat, Gina tried not to cry so her uncle wouldn’t hear her.

"How? Do you agree or not, honey?" Patrick asked again.

"Uncle," Gina called hoarsely. "I’m not asking for any gifts from uncle, I just want to ask uncle for help."

"Ask for help? What’s wrong, honey?"

"Please make a house for me next to my current mother’s house, uncle," Gina answered in a barely audible voice.

Because the sound of the vacuum cleaner being operated by an office boy was too loud, Patrick couldn’t hear Gina’s words clearly.

"What dear, what are you talking about? Uncle didn’t hear it."

Gina, who was already in the bathroom, smiled at the words of her godfather who sounded loving, remembering that there were still people who were sincere to her. Gina’s tears flowed back from her puffy and swollen eyes from crying last night.

"Give my regards to aunty Brigitta and my little brother, i’m sorry if this has been a bother to uncle and family," said Gina quietly holding back tears.

Patrick was taken aback, starting to realize that there was something wrong with what Gina had said earlier. "What are you doing, honey? Why does your voice sound different? Are you sick?"

"I’m fine, uncle. I’m actually happy right now because I’ll be seeing my mother soon."

Badump...

Patrick’s eyes were wide open. "Gina, what are you talking about? What happened? Where were you? Did Massimo hurt you? Tell uncle, honey."

"I’m fine, uncle. Really, you don’t have to worry about me," Gina said quietly, faintly behind Gina the sound of water could be heard.

"Gina, quickly tell uncle. What are you doing? What happened to you?"

"Goodbye uncle, Gina will definitely miss you . I love you uncle, thanks for everything..."

"No Gina, dear what happened to you? Tell uncle what Massimo has done...."

Patrick couldn’t continue what he was saying because Gina had already hung up, realizing something was wrong with his goddaughter, Patrick then dialed the number Gina had just used to call him. But how surprised he was when he realized the number that Gina had just used could not be reached.

Without further ado, Patrick then ran towards the door after grabbing his car keys which were on the table. Patrick felt that there was something wrong with Gina, so when he got to his car Patrick called Julian asking him to come to Massimo’s house immediately. However, because it was still too early, Julian’s number was not active.

"Fuck, this idiot really sucks," Patrick cursed loudly when he couldn’t reach Julian.

Not wanting to give up, Patrick then called Diego. Even though he is not familiar with Diego, Patrick hopes that this can be negotiated with Diego. The first and second calls were void, Diego did not receive the call.

Until finally, on the fourth try, Diego finally received Patrick’s call.

"Hello..."

"Diego, this is uncle Patrick, wake up quickly and ask your father to go to Massimo’s house. Something bad has happened to Gina," Patrick said loudly without stopping Diego’s words.

Diego, who was still sleepy, immediately opened his eyes wide. "What do you mean uncle?"

"Uncle doesn’t have much time to explain, let’s meet at Massimo’s house. Gina is in danger, Diego. Even though you don’t have a good relationship with Gina, please help your sister this time."

Diego’s jaw tightened. "Gina in danger? Okay uncle, I’ll catch up with you soon with Daddy."

"Thank you, Diego. See you there ...."

Without changing clothes, Diego immediately ran to the bathroom to wash his face and brush his teeth before finally running out of his room to his father’s room which was not far from his room.

"Gina, what’s wrong with you? Hold on, Gina," Diego said in his heart when he was knocking on the door of his stepfather and mother’s room which was still tightly closed.
