Chapter 156: Taste of Freedom

~ Eryx ~

With the North in the distance and the chaos left in those snowy peaked mountains, I watch my mate grow brighter with each passing step. The sunshine agrees with her. There’s more spark in her eyes, an innocence that seems to have returned as she sees my land for the first time.

Idalia is like an excited pup, and I can’t keep my eyes off her for more than a few seconds. I remain alert, though, especially as we venture closer to the palace. Nobody would dare touch what was mine but fleas gather at any new opportunity. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Unlike the North, we don’t abide by ridiculous and pompous traditions, but Weres do still try to sniff up my ass and tell me how lush it smells. I growled in response to my thoughts, and Idalia turned from the sea, holding some of her hair back from the wind and whipping it around her features.

We’d spent a few days longer on the coast so Idalia could enjoy the sights. I was in no rush to return to my father’s side, though I should keep more Weres from perishing. But how can I return to that madman when my woman, my light, is right here in front of me, enjoying the first bit of freedom she’s probably ever had.

The others continued to guard the perimeter while Kharis and Cohnal hunted fish nearby. They’d missed the meat and flavourful foods of Sun and Fury, and everything seemed rather bland in the North. With the land full of snow all year round, it was no wonder they couldn’t grow crops properly. Besides those that could hunt, I’d noted how hard life was there.

When things have settled, perhaps we can begin trading, though I am not sure what I would desire from there when we have so much here. It is why the North kept trying to invade for so many years. Our lands were rich and colourful. From the dry mountains of the South to the tropical beaches and vibrant forests and farmlands. It was only the perilous deserts and canyons that had stopped many of the Northern Weres from venturing far into Sun and Fury when they tried to claim the land as their own.

I watched my mate as she assessed me after hearing my growl and sensing my thoughts through the bond. She was learning a great deal about the wars between our kingdoms through glimpses of my memories, but I was trying to withhold it. It was a lot to take in, and I didn’t want to overwhelm her, especially after the attacks from the Fae, betrayals and her final fight with Deyanira.

My life, my mate, had so much power in her; she hadn’t really thought much about what had happened because of the sights of these new lands. The lands and sun have improved her complexion. Where Idalia had been turning a little pink from the sun, she was now surprisingly golden-tanned. I thought she might remain fair. With her tan came a few little freckles, revealing the sun’s kiss.

She was stunning, as pale as a pearl, and now radiant with a tan.

Idalia tilted her head and smiled mischievously at me, crooking her finger at me, and luring me like some temptress, a siren to join her in the shallow waters. I prowled forward, my strides long and quick as my wolf sensed the playfulness in my mate, and wanting the chase. Her eyes glimmered as she backed away, more into the water as she held my gaze, giggling, uncaring for her clothes getting wet.

This is why I couldn’t return to the palace so soon. Idalia’s smile and laughter. Those eyes are the brightest I’ve ever seen them here, and this mischievousness, this playfulness I can’t get enough of.

Her heart rate picked up, excited, her arousal still like that of her heat to me. Pure wildflowers and sunshine coasting my senses from the wind. My eyes glowed, and my chest rumbled. "Are you sure you want to play, Princess?" The water splashed at my ankles as I moved through it.

Idalia was more than waist deep. She was so tiny. Yet so much power was in that small frame.

"You sound scared, Alpha," she goaded me. Using the term Alpha only made me spring for her. She giggled and started skipping backwards in the water. A wave lifted her higher, halting her movements and I caught, eyes glowing, chest rumbling at the satisfaction of catching my mate.

"Me? Scared?" I growled into her throat, nipping and sucking the area. "Never."

Idalia’s hands went to my biceps, and she used the water to spring up and wrap her arms around my neck. My arms instinctively tightened, bringing her closer to me. I enveloped her, my large physique hiding her from the others patrolling the perimeter nearby. Salihn respectfully gave us privacy, turning her back to us and sorting through our bags.

In sync with her, my head moved from her neck and found her lips. She melted into me. "We haven’t been alone in a while..." She whispered. It had almost been a week since we’d lain in bed together.

It was utterly deplorable. We’d only been cuddling together at night, trying to be respectful for the others but the tether of our need had frayed a lot and that last piece just pinged out of place; the bond kept urging us to mate.

I tugged the waistband of my sirwal trousers down and walked further into the depths until the water covered up to my chest as she sank down on me with parted lips. A low moan escaped those pouty lips, and a rough guttural noise left mine as our brows came together, holding each other’s gazes as we started to move. She clung to me like a lifeline, and my hands covered her back, gripping her body stuck to mine as I impaled her slowly, watching her ride me.

Her head fell back on a moan, and she gasped as the skies had gradually turned a pinky-orange, the sun slowly dipping towards the horizon. Those crystal eyes watched it in amazement as sparks of pleasure shot through us. My lips found her neck as I enjoyed watching her, feeling her and smirking as she came so easily.

We were in there still as the sky grew purplish-pink and dark. Both were panting and not wanting to leave, but the waters grew a little colder, and the others were returning with the day’s meal. Idalia clung to me as our breaths slowed.

"If you’re done, dinner will be ready!" Salihn called out.

I growled a little at the interruption. Idalia giggled and hid her reddening cheeks. "They really are so alike," She murmurs, then kisses me softly. "Stop being grumpy. We could continue later... If you can be quiet," my cheeky mate says mischievously.

I grunted and bucked my hips once in response. "Sure you’re not talking about yourself."

Idalia’s breath hitched, but before she could act on it, Kharis called out this time while the orange firelight grew brighter behind me, and their bodies cast long shadows along the cliff where we sheltered. "Later then," I promise her with a low growl.
