Chapter 106: Nightmares

Eliana was silent for a while and didn’t even know it until Kayla asked, "Won’t you say something?"

"Huh?"

Kayla let out a nervous chuckle and said, "You just went silent after I told you I am pregnant." "Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t even realize. First of all, congratulations." Eliana said, finally regaining herself.

"Thank you."

"Does Mitch know?"

"No, I’m planning to tell him when he asks me to marry him." Kayla replied with a smile. "That’s great. I’m happy for the both of you." Eliana said with a smile. Kayla sighed and said, "After I found out about the baby, I just needed someone to talk to, and I’m glad I met you."

"I’m glad you saw me as someone who could confide in him." Eliana said and took another bite of her cake, but for some reason, it tasted bitter in her mouth.

"You know, Eliana, I’m really happy about this baby. It’s a symbol of our love, but I’m also worried."

"Worried? Why?"

"Having a baby means Mitch will have to take two jobs or change his job to one of higher pay." Kayla sighed and said, "If I had known about my pregnancy sooner, then I wouldn’t have allowed my mother-in-law to use up her savings just to get us to this trip."

"Well, there is no use thinking about it, and besides, your mother-in-law just wanted you and Mitch to be happy. Having a baby is a thing of joy, so I’m sure Mitch wouldn’t mind working two jobs or even switching to one with better pay."

"I know he wouldn’t; I also know he is going to be the best father in the world."

"I’m sure he will." Eliana replied with a smile. Kayla placed a hand on her belly and smiled. There was pure joy on her face as she thought of her baby that would be arriving in just a few months. "Eliana, can I ask you a question?" "Yeah, you can."

"West Yeng City is a very expensive city to go on a vacation in. I mean, my mother-in-law had to give Mitch and me her last savings just to give us this break. I’m guessing it’s the same for you, right?"

"Well, not really. It was Zach who planned our vacation, and he also paid for everything."

"I’m not being judgy or anything, but don’t you think the things you bought at the mall were too expensive? I mean, your husband must have also spent a lot of money, maybe even going as far as to use his savings as well to give the both of you a vacation here, and you buying expensive items might make things become hard for you guys."

"Hold on, is that the reason you were asking me not to buy too much and why you wanted to change malls after checking their price tag?" Eliana asked, not knowing if she should laugh or not.

Kayla slowly nodded her head and said, "Your husband seems to love you a lot, and he doesn’t seem like the talking type, so he may not reprimand you, but you should also be considerate. Money can become one of the issues for couples to separate, and I don’t want you and Zach to have issues, so that is why I’m saying this, but forgive me if I cross my boundaries."

Eliana laughed softly and said, "Money can never be a thing of argument for me and Zach. Zach has enough money to last us for a ....." Eliana was interrupted by her phone ringing; she saw that it was Charlotte calling and said to Kayla, "Give me a moment; my own mother-in-law is calling."

Kayla nodded and watched as Eliana answered the call. As Eliana spoke to Charlotte, Kayla looked at Eliana and thought to herself how pretty the woman was; in fact, she felt that Eliana was exuding wealth, but since Eliana wasn’t arrogant like all the wealthy women she had met here, she didn’t think much of it.

"Are you with Zach?" Charlotte asked.

"No, I went out with a friend."

"He isn’t answering his calls, and I’m worried."

"Why are you worried? He was perfectly fine when I left."

Charlotte was quiet for a few seconds before she asked, "Eliana, do you remember what today is?"

"Today?"

"You don’t remember, do you? Today is the day Zach saw his father lying in his own blood."

"Oh shit." Eliana whispered. as her eyes widen in realization.

"Zach normally gets nightmares on this day, but last year he was fine, so I’m sure that is why you didn’t remember. I don’t know if it will be the same for this year, so I tried calling to check up on him, but he isn’t answering his call."

"I... I’m going back to the hotel now; I will call you when I’m with him."

"Okay, thank you, and please take care of him. I’m sure that last year the thought of little treasure must have overshadowed his nightmares about his dad, but I’m not sure how this year is going to be." Charlotte said, feeling worried for her son.

"You don’t have to worry; I will take care of him. I have to go now, bye." Eliana ended the call and heard Kayla ask,

"Is everything alright?"

"I have to go now; Zach isn’t feeling too well." "Okay, let’s meet some other time." Kayla said. Eliana nodded and quickly walked out of the cafe.

Kayla watched through the window as she got into a cab. She sighed and said, "I hope her husband gets better soon." Kayla finished her juice and paid for their orders before leaving the cafe as well.

....

Zach woke up in the pool of his sweat and sighed when he realized it was the same nightmare again. He saw that the time was just 12:15 pm and thought of calling his wife when the door to their suite opened and his wife rushed in.

"Zach!" Eliana shouted as she rushed to him; she immediately placed her hand on his forehead to check if he was having a fever, but thankfully he wasn’t, so why is he sweating so much?

"Did you have a nightmare?" Eliana asked. "Did my mom call you?" Zach asked instead of replying to her question.

"She did; she said she was trying to reach you but couldn’t and that she was worried about you. I should probably call her to inform her that I’m already with you."

"Eli, I don’t want to talk to her. Please."

Eliana sighed and hugged him, saying, "It’s fine. I won’t call her then, but I won’t leave you alone to your nightmares."

Zach chuckled and wrapped his hands around her. "I already know it won’t be possible to get rid of you, and I sincerely don’t mind."

Eliana looked at him and said, "You haven’t eaten, right?"

Zach shook his head.

"You should freshen up while I get you something to eat." Eliana said and was about to walk out when Zach dragged her back, making her sit on his lap. "Stay with me for a while." Zach rested his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes. It’s amazing how being close to her was capable of making him feel better within seconds.

Eliana ran her hands through his hair and asked, "What are your nightmares about?" Zach was silent for a while, and Eliana thought he wasn’t going to answer until she heard him say, "I see him standing in front of me with a gun to his head, and I see myself begging him not to do it. Whenever I see him, he looks at me with so much despair before finally pulling the trigger."

"But it’s just a nightmare. I’m sure if you had asked him not to do it, then he wouldn’t have done it."

"He would have still done it; he was selfish till the end." Zach said coldly.

"Zach."

"If he truly wanted to end his life, then why did he have to do it in the house? He knew Mom wasn’t at home, and if anyone were to find him, it would either be the servants or his kids. Why did he have to be found by me?" "You never should have seen your dad that way. He saw death as a way to escape and took it without even considering you or your brother. He doesn’t deserve to be in your dreams, Zach."

"I know, but sometimes..."

"Why don’t we rewrite it?"

"What?"

Eliana looked at him and said, "This day was once the worst day of your life, so why don’t we rewrite it? Give me a chance to make this day the best day of your life, and whenever this particular day comes again, we will continue to make new memories until the shadow that follows you on this day completely disappears."

Zach laughed and asked, "How do you plan to rewrite this day?"

There was a mischievous glint in Eliana’s eyes as she said, "I will take care of that, but first we have to feed you."

Zach released his hold on her as she stood up from his lap and asked, "Won’t you give me a kiss before going?" Eliana chuckled and leaned to kiss him. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Having you by my side already makes me feel better."

Eliana smiled and replied, "Then it’s a good thing that I’m always going to be by your side." "You promise?"

"I promise."

To be honest, the only nightmare that bothered Zach today was the one where he saw her leaving him. Since she has promised to always stay by his side, that means she would never leave him, right?
