Chapter 26: The Havoc Flux Syndrome

Xavier took a few more deep breaths before speaking.

"Yeah... I’m fine. I just spent a bit too much Aether, I guess?" Xavier replied finally having calmed down.

Is the other material Samuel mentioned the one that allowed me to use Sky Sunder—the Rune etched on the dagger? Xavier wondered, unsure.

"Hmm... I’ll think about it later. For now, I need to get out of this area. With all the commotion I caused, I’m 110% sure hordes of Monsters will gather here. But before that..."

Whooosh!

Puchi~!

"GROO!!"

The last remaining monster—the Level Two Ungraded Monster that initially attacked him but had fainted—was the one he killed just now.

"This little booger really thought it could deceive me by playing dead, huh?"

After realizing this, Xavier used the Hell’s Advocate dagger to finish it off quickly.

"One last thing to take care of," Xavier muttered, his gaze settling coldly on the blood-soaked corpses of the two monsters he had just slain. Their twisted forms lay still, oozing pungent fluids into the cracked earth, the smell of burnt flesh thick in the air.

His fingers flexed slightly, anticipation tingling down to his knuckles.

"Since most people can’t—and those who can are strictly forbidden to—pursue Transcendency, a forsaken(?) place like this is perfect for advancing one’s Tiers."

A small chuckle escaped his lips.

"And to take the next step...kuhu." He paused and let out a raspy breath before grinning — a grin devoid of warmth, his eyes narrowing like a predator preparing to feast.

"There’s no better way than to absorb the monster Cores," he said, voice laced with dark anticipation.

"Especially from these ugly little bastards."

He kicked one of the bodies with contempt.

"Unfortunately, Ungraded Monsters like these don’t usually leave behind usable Cores. Most of the time, their Cores shatter the moment they die, or dissolve into useless dust before you can even reach them."

He looked around. The battlefield was strewn with bodies — mangled, burned, crushed.

"But..." he added with a smirk, "...with over a dozen fresh kills, the odds are in my favor. Surely at least one of these freaks still has a Core intact."

Cracking his knuckles, Xavier stepped forward.

"Only one way to find out," he whispered, crouching beside the nearest corpse, his grin stretching wider. "Time to get my hands dirty."

He plunged his fingers into the flesh.

From a distance, atop a tree, a silhouette of a man with blonde hair could be seen.

"Unsurprisingly, he is capable of Transcendency—just like his father. Not only that, in a world where pursuing Transcendency is forbidden for all but a few, he still managed to reach Tier 0, Level 3. Not half bad. Although..."

Those eyes...

"It seems that this might be his true personality," the man muttered as his ocean-blue eyes narrowed while watching Xavier.

At night, when Xavier was sleeping like a log, Samuel was up and he was going through all the information regarding the world while he was turned off.

Of course he also researched Xavier. Among the few things he found about him, one of them was a doctor’s report about him.

The report went as follows:

[XYZ Hospital – Patient File

Name: Xavier Cromwell

DOB: 30th October, 10010 G.E

Age: 10 years

Sex: Male

Height: 151 cm

Weight: 39 kg

Guardian: Anna Cromwell

Medical Record Number: 4850R83R

Reason for Visit: Suspected psychological issues.

Doctor’s Opinion: The patient appears normal but undergoes a complete personality shift regarding certain topics—namely Transcendency, Nobles, and Religion. When discussing these subjects, the patient’s typically kind and gentle demeanor becomes cold and ruthless. Based on all tests and counseling sessions, my conclusion is that the patient may have a combination of Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder Type 2 or Cyclothymia. However, unlike most individuals with BPD—who often suffer from unstable relationships—the patient shows no such tendencies (according to the patient’s mother). Furthermore, the BD2 symptoms are only triggered when the aforementioned topics are brought up, and even then, not consistently. One unusual observation is a faint red hue in the patient’s eyes during these shifts. Given the uniqueness of this case, it’s too early to make a definitive diagnosis. Further counseling is recommended to reach a conclusive assessment.– Dr. Balthazar]

After reading the report, Samuel’s expression remained unreadable. Without a word, he retrieved more reports about Xavier—some from different doctors and hospitals. Yet they all echoed the same findings as the first: no definitive cure, only recommendations for further counseling.

"What...?"

’Strange, the reports started getting better after he reached 13 years. But-’

"...!"

Samuel’s eyebrows rose sharply as he examined another report. At the top, it was marked:

Concluded and Solved

’If the illness is what I think it is, that shouldn’t be...’

He opened the report and read:

[XYZ Hospital

Name: Xavier Cromwell

DOB: 30th October, 10010 G.E

Age: 13 years

Sex: Male

Height: 157 cm

Weight: 45 kg

Guardian: Anna Cromwell

Medical Record Number: 4850R83R

Reason for Visit: Psychological issues.

Doctor’s Opinion: The patient appears to be in perfect health. The exact cause is unknown. It may be due to the treatment and medications administered, including counseling and other therapies. After completing all the necessary evaluations, I conclude that the patient is healthy and may return to a normal life, just like any other child his age.

’Without a doubt... I’m sure of it now,’

’Master Xavier has...The Havoc Flux Syndrome.’

’From the knowledge available to me, the Havoc Flux Syndrome is a rare and poorly understood neurological and psychological disorder. It causes a person’s personality to shift unpredictably between two opposing emotional states. Most of the time, the affected individual is kind, gentle, and emotionally stable. But at irregular intervals, they undergo a transformation into a version of themselves that is erratic, cold, ruthless, aggressive—and sometimes, even sadistic. In many cases, their eyes take on a red hue during this state.’

’These episodes can last from mere seconds to several days, after which they revert to their normal selves—often with little or no memory of their behavior while altered. The shifts are most commonly triggered by emotional instability.’

’From what I’ve observed so far, Master Xavier was...’1
