Chapter 33: Boundless

From the top of the tree I was standing on, I lunged at the beast, bringing my claws down on it with speed and power. Dust rose from the crater I created as I narrowly missed the creature and struck the ground. Sensing the opportunity, the beast swung its needle-like fingers at me. When I dodged, it followed up with a kick that sent me flying, knocking down trees as I tumbled to the ground.

The attack completely caught me off guard. I never expected such human-like movements from a monster. Wasting no time, it charged at me again, barreling its pointed, deer-like horns toward me in an effort to impale me. Grabbing onto one of its horns, I broke off a large enough piece and used it to stab the beast right in its chest. It let out a loud scream, confirming that it could feel pain.

I flipped the creature onto its back, and grabbing the deer skull, I ripped its head off as it cried out in apparent agony.

Clap, clap, clap.

A round of applause came from above. Looking up, I saw Leto flying with a pair of white wings on his back.

"Was this thing yours?" I asked.

"Good job getting rid of it. I was actually planning to take care of it myself."

"What even is this thing, anyway?"

"So you don't know?" Leto gracefully descended from the sky and landed in front of me. "Meet Maya Tachibana," he said, directing my attention to the body of the fallen beast.

Maya Tachibana? I recognized the name—the dead girl. She was the girl they found dead at our school.

"Wait, that doesn't make any sense. Didn't they find the body of the girl? How could this thing be her?"

"Correction: they found a husk. Notice how this creature doesn't have any skin. This creature is called a Wendigo. They are created when a human is exposed to intense hunger. Do you know anyone associated with hunger?"

Hunger? It took me a second to understand what he was saying, but then it hit me like a bolt of lightning.

"Famine. One of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. He's the one responsible for this?"

"The moment I saw this creature, I knew who we were up against."

"'We'? Who's 'we'? I'm not a part of this," I said.

"You are now, since you killed that thing. He won't only be coming after me, you know."

"So this thing was after you?"

"Yep. You said it yourself: you hate being cornered, so I knew you would get involved." Dammit, I played right into his hands. "We need to find out who he is. I'm 100% sure he's a student at this school. The question is who?"

"Stop saying 'we.' I want nothing to do with this!"

"Are you really that scared?"

"Yes, of course I'm scared! Who wouldn't be? We're talking about one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I wouldn't stand a chance. You would need an army of angels to take him down."

"Idiot, I'm not planning on fighting. I just want to figure out who he is and convince him to leave. I can't believe you're dumb enough to think you can run from this. His presence here means that this entire world isn't safe."

"So why not contact Michael and the other angels?"

"I can't! If I could, I would have done that already. That's why I'm telling you to help me. This isn't a question."

"You know, the way I see it, you're the problem right now, not Famine. I couldn't care less why he's here as long as it doesn't affect me. But you? You're the real problem."

"Say whatever you want, but the fact remains: you have no choice but to help me. I'm going back to Ava; we can't leave her alone for too long. We're going to the campsite at B2. Make sure you arrive there by 7 pm, or we'll all be punished," Leto said before flying off.

I've made up my mind. Before the special training regimen is finished, I'm going to kill that angel—for good this time. He's become too much of a nuisance. I couldn't care less about Famine; as long as I stay away from him, I should be fine. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse aren't something I should involve myself in. If he wants to mess around and turn people into Wendigos, then there's nothing I can do about it.

I don't know much about Famine, but if he's anything like Death, then I wouldn't stand a chance against him.

Checking the watch on my wrist, I saw that I had completed 47 kilometers out of the required 50. That meant I had chased this thing for over 40 kilometers, and to make matters worse, B2 was roughly 100 kilometers from where I was. It was currently 11 a.m., which meant I had 9 hours to get there. In total, that meant I was traveling three times the distance required for the day.

With no time to waste, I started toward B2. About two hours into my journey, I ran into a group consisting of the three class leaders. Two of them, Julius and Katherine, blatantly ignored me. As for Liam, he marched over with a worried look on his face. I had no clue what this would be about.

"Are you alright? Where's Ava?" he asked.

"I don't know. We got separated; she's probably with Leto."

"What! How could you not know? You should be protecting her right now! She's a specialist, which means there will be students after her!" he said, gripping me by the collar.

I was getting sick of people telling me what to do. I didn't have to do anything. I grabbed his hand that was holding my collar.

"Let go. I'm really not in the mood right now."

"How could you be so careless as to leave her? I should have never let her be in the same group as you."

I pried his hand off me and pushed him away, continuing on my way to my destination and leaving them behind.

"If anything happens to her, this alliance between us is over!!" he shouted.

"What alliance? I'm not bound by anything—not anymore." I said without even looking back at them.
