Chapter 22: Roles of a Leader

On May 2, I arrived at school at the usual time and entered my classroom. I took my seat at the back and started gazing out the window waiting for homeroom to start. Just then, I was approached by Finn and Sarah, the class leaders. What could they want?

"Can we talk for a moment?" Sarah asked, sounding more polite than usual.

"Sure, what about?"

"It's just that you haven't done anything since the tournament, and our classmates are starting to feel a little anxious."

"What do you expect me to do?"

"Lead!" Finn spoke up. "You're our leader now. You should tell us what to do. You can't spend all day lazing around with that moron Jeffrey! If things continue like this, we'll fall behind the other classes. We have a special exercise coming up, and you haven't even told us what to do about it. Some of us are struggling to find partners in the other classes, and you don't even care."

It was true; I hadn't done anything since declaring myself leader of Class D. I had let them do whatever they wanted, thinking they wanted to be free and not worry about the other classes. Why were they pestering me now?

"Look, I'm fine with you being leader," Sarah said. "You're better than that jerk Rizor, for one, but you have to start acting like a leader."

"What's the point of having a leader if he's this useless? I'd rather have Rizor or someone else from Class A. I'm not obligated to follow this guy, and neither are my classmates."

"Are you crazy? Sure, he's not the best at leading people, but at least he's not acting like a dictator, and some of us want to follow him."

"Did you guys just come here to argue?" I interrupted their bickering.

"I came here to tell you that you're not fit to be our leader, and I won't accept you. I still have the majority of the class backing me on this. We don't need your help; from now on, I'll be the leader."

"You're free to challenge me whenever you want."

"Most of the class—"

"This isn't a democracy. You're free to lead, but under my orders. It doesn't matter if the rest of the class follows you if I'm the one controlling your actions. In fact, from now on, Finn, you are my errand boy. If you want to be the leader, you have to get rid of me first. Your first order is to leave me in peace."

"You think I won't fight back? You're nothing special. You beating Rizor was nothing but a fluke."

Finn muttered before walking off. Sarah stayed behind, looking like she wasn't finished talking.

"Is there something else?" I asked.

"Our classmates are having trouble partnering with students from the other classes. Ever since the incident with Rizor, they've been avoiding us."

"Okay."

Sarah grew irritated by my lack of response. I could sense she was trying to hold back what she really wanted to say, perhaps out of fear stemming from my actions with Rizor. What kind of girl is Sarah, anyway? I found myself wondering. She was beautiful, with long blonde hair that cascaded down to her waist, and her uniform skirt was so short that a single gust of wind could be detrimental. She also seemed smart; she started dating Finn right after we enrolled here.

"You were the one who told them to stay away from us. Look, as I said before, I think it's great that you're the leader of our class, but being a leader means you must help us."

"I have no experience leading anyone."

"That's fine. I'll help you. I'll be there to support you whenever you need me, but first, we need to find some partners for our classmates."

Maybe I was hasty to make an enemy of the other classes. What we needed most were allies. I think I know the perfect person to contact.

"Are you free after lunch?" I asked.

"I can be. Why?"

"Meet me at lunch, we can discuss somethings then."

"Oh, I... I'll be there."

After Sarah left, I took out my phone and messaged a certain someone, extending a gracious invitation for lunch. Shortly after, I received a reply.

Just as lunch started, before I could even move from my seat, Sarah approached me.

"You ready to go?" she asked with a cute smile, twirling her finger through her hair. I noticed she was standing closer than usual, our bodies just inches apart—close enough for me to catch the citrus aroma of her perfume.

"Yeah, let's go."

As we left, I could feel the eyes of our classmates staring intensely at us. I also noticed Finn giving me a death glare. Sarah didn't say a word as we walked pass him which I'm sure ticked him off even more.

When we arrived at the cafeteria, I went to order my lunch and then joined Sarah to find a spot to sit. We settled into a small corner of the cafeteria. Instead of sitting at the opposite end of the table, Sarah chose to sit closely beside me.

"A sandwich? Is that all you're having for lunch?" she asked, glancing at my simple meal.

Sarah had brought a bento box filled with a selection of cured meats, artisanal cheeses, olives, nuts, and whole grain crackers. Looking at her meal suddenly made me feel hungrier.

"That's not enough. Have some of mine," she insisted, practically jamming the fork down my throat before I could refuse. "Is it good?"

"Yeah, it is. Did you make it?"

"Yeah, I did," Sarah replied with a confident wink. "I'm glad you like it. I make lunches for my friends all the time. I even make them dinner sometimes; it's a pain in the ass."

"Tell me about it. I normally cook for Jeffrey and Amelia. It's a headache."

"You.... cook?! Wait, who's Amelia?"

"Amelia?... She's Jeffrey's sister."

"Oh... for a second, I thought she was your girlfriend..." she paused for a second, "Do you have a girlfriend?" she asked staring at me with a longing expression. Was she really that curious? "I'm asking for a friend, by the way."

A friend?

"No, I don't have a girlfriend."

"Really?! A popular guy like you?"

"Me? Popular?"

"Yeah, even before the incident with Rizor. You were a hot topic among the girls, but they started staying away from you after you began hanging out with Jeffrey. They figured you were a weirdo like him. Anyway, there's got to be at least one girl you like? Right?"

"Nope. All the girls I know are either violent or act like children."

Female attraction was a mystery to me. I certainly felt it physically, at least, but emotionally—was it even possible? Lucifer often spoke to me about love, particularly in relation to him and Lilith. Yet, in those conversations, it often seemed more about sex than love; that was what he was most interested in.

"Hahaha... you're funnier than I thought you'd be! You always look so serious; it's kind of intimidating. That's probably why people don't approach you often. I can help you talk to the others in class so you can make more friends."

"No thanks. I'm not really interested in making friends, and I find I'm more adept at making enemies."

"Really? Have you always been like this? What were you like in middle school?"

Just then, the person I had been waiting for showed up, accompanied by his female companions—Mia and Ava.

"Sorry I took so long. I had an errand I needed to take care of." Liam explained

"It's cool. Have a seat."

"What's going on?" Sarah asked, with a look of confusion.

"It's about the problem we discussed this morning. I think this is the best way to solve it."

Liam sat down at the table with Mia and Ava.

"So, what do you want to talk about?" he asked.

"I want to form an alliance."
