Chapter 57: Monsters Deserve No Mercy (1)

Chapter 58

If the man running toward his burning village knew what the little baby was thinking, he would have been even more convinced that the child was a devil.

But he did not think about that.

He could not.

His entire focus was on reaching his village.

It cannot be them. Right?

His heart raced.

It cannot be the scavengers. Right?

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

No.

Please no.

He begged. He prayed to every god he knew. Even the ones he had only heard about in old folktales.

But his prayers were never meant to be answered.

He burst past the final line of trees and stepped into a massive clearing where his village once stood.

What greeted him was not the peaceful place he knew.

It was hell.

Instead of children laughing and running around, mutilated bodies lay scattered across the ground. Some children were already dead. Others were still alive, gravely wounded, crying beside the corpses of their parents.

Huts and wooden houses collapsed as fire spread from one end of the village to the other.

Sisco’s body trembled as unbearable pain and grief crushed his chest.

"No. No. No."

His scream tore out of him as he rushed forward.

Please be safe.

Please be safe.

Callack and Selene stared at the scene, their expressions darkening.

This was not just brutal.

This was cruel.

What kind of beast could do this?

They got their answer seconds later.

A screaming woman burst out of one of the few houses still standing. Her body was half naked. Her face twisted with terror and tears. She ran as if death itself was chasing her.

And it was.

A rough, muscular man followed her calmly. He was half nude, a knife dangling loosely in his hand. His eyes looked at the woman not as a person, but as prey.

"Hey, come here," he said casually. "Try to please me and I might not actually kill you."

His voice carried certainty. Like her fate was already sealed.

"Oh? Or do you want to end up like your husband?"

As if to prove his words, he licked the blade of his knife. It was stained with fresh blood.

Her husband’s blood.

The woman’s eyes widened as her husband’s final moments flashed through her mind.

Her legs gave out.

She collapsed onto the ground, trembling violently. Her mouth opened and closed uselessly as tears streamed down her face.

"You... you are nothing more than a monster wearing human skin," she screamed, hysteria taking over. "Just die. Die."

The bald man did not stop.

He kept walking until he stood right in front of her.

His confident grin and relaxed posture crushed what little hope she had left. Dread coiled deep in her chest.

"You..." she whispered weakly. "Just go and die."

She threw a punch.

It was weak. Desperate.

The man slapped it aside effortlessly, then backhanded her across the face. Her body slammed into the ground with brutal force. Blood sprayed from her mouth as he loomed over her like a predator ready to feast.

"Now behave," he said, grinning. "Please me, and maybe I will kill you with less pain."

He reached for her clothes.

Her eyes dimmed.

Hope died.

But before his hands could touch her chest, something flashed. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

A wet sound echoed.

Blood exploded across his face.

"Huh?"

The man blinked in confusion and horror as he looked down.

His hands were gone.

Both of them.

Cleanly severed.

He never even felt the blade.

He could not stay stunned for long.

A kick came swinging his way.

Full force.

Selene’s foot smashed into his face and sent him flying like a rocket, his body tearing straight through the building he had just walked out of.

Bam.

The structure collapsed on him.

The young woman, who had lost all hope moments ago, slowly turned her head. Her weak, trembling eyes landed on two figures standing before her. Their backs were broad. Their presence heavy.

For the first time, her fear eased.

She felt like she could trust them.

Like they could give her something she thought she had lost forever.

Hope.

Maybe even revenge.

The collapsed building trembled.

Debris shifted.

A figure rose from the ruins.

The man glared at Selene and Callack with a murderous expression.

"Do you two even know what you’ve done?" he snarled. "Do you know how much danger you’re in for crossing us? For crossing the scavengers?"

"Shut up," Selene said.

Her gaze held no emotion, but the rage beneath her voice was boiling. Seething.

"You lost."

The man tried to respond.

He could not.

He could not even move a finger.

Cold steel rested against his neck.

Callack’s voice came out calm. Too calm.

"Monsters deserve no mercy."

The blade moved.

Clean.

His head was severed and rolled across the ground, bouncing several times before finally stopping.

The young woman stared at the scene as if she was dreaming.

Not a nightmare.

A beautiful dream.

Someone had actually stood up to the scavengers. And they were strong.

"Please," she whispered weakly. "Kill them. Kill all of them."

Her eyes closed.

Selene rushed to her side, fingers pressing against her neck.

She exhaled in relief.

"She’s alive. Just collapsed from stress."

Callack stared at the headless corpse without emotion.

This was his second time killing a human.

And what was different from the first?

Nothing.

They were not human.

They were monsters.

Selene stood up slowly.

"Let’s clear this area first," she said.

Callack nodded.

Together, they moved.

The scavengers, whoever they were, were strong. Some might have even been cultivators. But they were not prepared to face people like Selene and Callack.

People who had survived endless danger. Who had traveled through dense beast filled lands. Who had lived through battles that should have killed them.

They were death itself to this group of savages.

The news spread fast.

By the time Callack and Selene finished clearing the area, the scavengers were gone.

Selene placed Rayden in a relatively safe place, far from the burning houses and blood soaked battlefield.

"Stay here. We’ll be back," she said, kissing his forehead.

The child did not look afraid.

As usual.

His eyes were calm. Too calm. Like everything was already under control.

"Ta ta," Rayden managed to say.

Selene smiled.

"Yes. Stay safe."

She rushed off, Callack right behind her.

The moment they left, Rayden’s adorable face twisted into something else.

A deadly grin.

Safe?

Not a chance.

He was only holding himself back because they were nearby.

If not, he would have already started killing.

He really wanted to know how those savages would sound when they burned alive.
