Chapter 348: Did You Kick His Ass?

Ruediger’s answer shocked both Madeline and Lariette. He remained calm after admitting he had personally warned Felicia about Matthew Alvord targeting her.

Lariette blinked, inadvertently wondering when Ruediger talked to Felicia about the Alvords. At the same time, awe flooded her heart because this meant he tried to be a few steps ahead of those scums.

Yes! This was how it should be!

"Maddie," Ruediger spoke after a brief silence, his eyes glancing at Lariette before falling on the phone in his hand, "It’s just one of the measures I took after Vincent suddenly wanted to meet me."

"...he did what? That bastard wanted to meet you? For what?"

Surprised by Ruediger’s claim, Madeline unconsciously raised her voice. Each of her words, including the incredulity, loudly rang in the living room.

Ruediger chuckled, already expecting Madeline to get mad and curse Vincent. Then, he explained more, beginning with how Vincent kept sending him e-mails and letters last week.

Lariette listened without interrupting, even holding back her laughter when Madeline’s temper flared more. Her friend cursed Vincent and Matthew with all the names existing under the sky.

"Did they bury their heads far up their asses? No longer has shame? They crawled back to you to demand help?!"

Madeline’s uncouth curses, too enraged by the Alvord father and son’s shamelessness. Her anger reached another peak when Ruediger mentioned Vincent personally going to Lariette’s school to get her help.

"Lari! Were you okay? Did he do anything to you? Did you kick his ass?"

Lariette and Ruediger exchanged helpless smiles before she spoke, trying to calm the infuriated Madeline. Evident concern was imbued in her voice.

"I was fine. He didn’t cause much scene, actually. I warned him not to approach Eddy anymore, but I didn’t expect they would target your mom instead."

Madeline replied nothing, only her breathing resonated from the end of the line, seemingly thinking of something or weighing the situation. Lariette and Ruediger didn’t push her to speak until she eventually responded.

"Rudy, you said you’ve talked to Mom about this, right? Then, I think I don’t have to worry much anymore. You’ll handle it, right?"

Ruediger hummed, "Aunt Felicia hasn’t given me new updates. I’ll talk to her soon. Maybe tomorrow. It’s already late for her."

"Ah, yeah," Madeline exhaled a sigh, "Mom might sleep already. Okay, I’ll trust you to handle this. Thanks, Rudy. And Lari, sorry for bothering you guys at night."

"It’s fine," Lariette quickly chirped, then she added, "Maddie, don’t think too much, okay? I believe your mom will be fine."

"Hahaha! Of course! Rudy’s here so I’m not afraid anymore."

Madeline’s laughter echoed in the living room, no longer having the traces of her initial sadness and anger. Then, she ended the phone call after saying good night to Lariette and Ruediger.

Lariette was actually quite surprised to hear how calm Madeline was before hanging up. Her deep faith in Ruediger was manifested through her voice as if she truly believed he could resolve this issue soon.

Was it because Ruediger had Nathaniel to back him up?

Or was there any other reason?

Lariette’s train of thought was cut when she felt Ruediger’s hand on her waist, easily enveloping her curve. Blinking, she tilted her chin up, staring back at him who wore a smirk on his lips.

"Still worried?" he asked, eyes flickering with mischief, "Nothing to worry about. Aunt Felicia will come out of this unscathed."

The confidence in Ruediger’s voice softened the smile on Lariette’s lips. She nodded once. Lifting one hand, she played with his cheek, her fingertips grazing his jawline.

"They made a stupid gamble by involving Aunt Felicia. It’s the perfect time for you to strike. Make them question their existence, okay?"

Aunt Felicia was Ruediger’s sole parent figure after his mother’s unfortunate early demise and his father’s misplaced blame. The Alvords dragged themselves to the guillotines by targeting her in this mess.

Humph! Did they think they were untouchable? They were too arrogant!

Lariette’s choice of words tickled Ruediger’s heart, then he laughed. Leaning in, he wrapped his arms around her figure and his chin rested on her shoulder.

"I won’t let them guilt trip me again. I know I’m never in the wrong. I’m not."

Ruediger’s voice was slightly muffled, but brimming with conviction. Lariette smiled while patting his back. His unyielding confidence widened the beautiful arc of her lips.

"That’s my Eddy. Let them be with their delusions. You only have to focus on being happy, okay? Remember our Christmas plan? We gonna decorate the tree together."

"Hehe, I won’t forget that," Ruediger chuckled, once again amused with Lariette, "We’ll put up a tree, decorate it, and put more decorations here. We’ll also discuss what kind of dishes we wanna have for Christmas, and also what to serve when we host Grandpa."

"Yes! That’s our priority!"

Ruediger laughed more. As he kept hugging Lariette, he listened to her rambling more about their future Christmas plans. Her pure excitement made him look forward to December so much more than in previous years.

But before that...

He had to deal with the Alvords first.

Since they had willingly fallen into his trap, shouldn’t he go and greet them? Best to do it as soon as possible lest they interrupt his sweet wintertime with his beloved.

"Lettie, should we go to bed now?" Ruediger said quietly, pulling away from Lariette, "You gonna have another busy day tomorrow."

"En, you’re right," Lariette groaned, "I wish the weekend would come faster."

"Hehe, they’ll be here in a few days."

Ruediger and Lariette left the living room, their steps quiet in the hallway. After brushing their teeth and preparing for bed, they settled on the mattress, huddling under the thick comforter.

"Night, Eddy," Lariette covered her mouth, almost yawning.

"Sweet dreams, Lettie."

Ruediger leaned in, kissing her forehead. Lariette responded by pecking his lips. Then, she drifted to sleep.

Later that night, Ruediger was still awake when the tired Lariette slept in his arms. He thought about contacting Felicia first thing in the morning.

But... there was something he worried about.

He most likely needed to fly to Norvonna and be there for a few days.
