Heart Over Sword-Chapter 252: Dragon (1)
Chapter 252: Dragon (1)
Evanna sheathed her sword and started readying a bow. Her hands trembled as the giant beast was almost close to the icy lake. Would it blow fire? None, besides Axel, had a shield.
"That will never cut through dragon scales," Garrett grunted, pulling his overly large seraph blade out.
Evanna knew he meant well, but she was unable to control her voice as she snapped back. "I didn’t intend to hit its scales." Garrett glanced at her then his lips twitched into a smile.
"Spread out!" Arawn commanded; everyone besides Evanna followed his command without complaint, figuring it was the best procedure.
The princess remained where she was, aiming her arrow and taking slow controlled breaths even as the dragon’s large claws looked as though they might grab her face and squish her. That was when she released the arrow, knocking another three simultaneously in the same direction.
The creature growled, its wings expanding to stop itself from landing as the arrows shot directly at its green-blue eyes. But it closed its eyes, the eyelid shielding it and bouncing the arrows off it. Then the magnificent being proceeded to land.
The beast’s weight crushed through the ice Arawn formed, breaking it and splintering it further. The ground shook, making everyone lose their balance. Axel slipped over, as did Ronan and even Evanna. She was the closest to the dragon, and its weight caused her to slip forwards and slide on her front closer to it.
She managed to hold onto her bow and used the speed of falling towards the beast to flip onto her back, manoeuvring another arrow into place and cocked it back. As the arrow released, her foot caught on cracked ice that dipped her forward. The dragon roared just as Evanna rolled to the side out of its range of cobalt blue fire.
"Evanna!" She heard the others calling her name. She was the closest and in the most danger.
"Distract it!" Arawn’s voice stood out the most among the others, barking orders as she scrambled out of the way of its claws that stomped towards her. The scaled limbs were bigger than her entire body. It could squish her in a matter of seconds!
Axel started banging his shield with his axe, shouting and grunting at the beast, distracting it from the closest prey. Evanna. It wasn’t working, though; the dragon’s blue-green eyes showed more intelligence than any normal beast; it looked at him like he was an idiot and returned to look at Evanna, reaching out its claws.
Arawn blasted the beast with ice, aiming for its slightly damaged eye, where Evanna released that final arrow as she slid towards it. He made sure to make the ice into sharp daggers. The dragon whined, its wide jaw widening, revealing its sharp, jagged teeth, before inhaling and releasing a blast of those blue flames in Arawn’s direction.
While it was distracted by Arawn, who formed an icy shield that continuously grew against the fire, the others raced towards it simultaneously. Fiza was the first to make it close to the beast, hopping onto its claws and climbing the beast with a grin. Garrett jumped and swung down the seraph blade towards the dragon’s right wing while Ronan and Axel went for its other wing.
Ger slid along the ice on his side and helped pull Evanna away from the dragon. The beast fought with the others, easily throwing them off and seeming to find them as nothing more than annoying ants. Ger ran with Evanna until they were safely behind Arawn’s makeshift shield.
"We can’t stay here. The others need us and-" The ice beneath them started to crack, Arawn fought to seal them up with his own ice, but the stomping of large, clawed feet kept coming closer.
"Evanna!" Ger pushed her towards Arawn, away from the icy shield, just as the dragon burst through it with its horned head. ƒreewebɳovel.com
"Who dares wear Dracobain near me.." The dragon’s voice rumbled, shaking the ice already thinning from the fire and the beast’s weight.
The white dragon turned its head towards Evanna and Arawn, who flipped onto their feet, readying to fight. "Arawn, make me some steps!" Evanna shouted over her shoulder as she already ran towards the beast.
Arawn didn’t have much choice and only guessed what she meant after glancing at Ger and remembering their little trick when they fought in Direwood forest. Calling his power, he created stepping stones for her to run up towards the beast. He didn’t want her anywhere near the creature!
But he could feel the power emanating from her. Ger was also charging towards it, distracting it, and Fiza somehow managed to get on its back while Ronan was forced to jump over the tail, and Axel was struggling to stay afloat on some broken ice, his body in the water.
Evanna continued to step up the icy steps Arawn created, raising her hands to her back and unsheathing both swords. She hoped they would not break. She’d already seen one of Axel’s throwing axes split in two.
"The dragon sword!" Arawn and Garrett shouted at her.
Of course! Halting her action, she unsheathed the glowing sword she’d started to forget about, even though it was heavier than her other swords. Jumping, she swung the sword down. But the dragon snapped its head in her direction, eyes narrowing at her flight and the sword as his claw crushed Ger beneath it.
The sight of Ger going underwater from the cracked ice and the way the dragon moved to grab her caused her breathing to catch. The creature smacked Evanna mid-air like she was a pesky bug but followed to where her body flew through the air. The sword slipped from her hold and sliced into the ice so it stood tall.
"Evanna!" Arawn shouted in rage and shock. It was the first time he feared for his girl.
The creature grabbed Evanna with one clawed hand and jumped, extending its wings for flight. Evanna could barely breathe from the way it tightened its hold on her. Gasping from the lack of air, almost crushed bones and the icy air sending her hood back and mask to fall away, Evanna struggled to get her dagger free from her boot, but she couldn’t quite reach it.
Wait. She was such an idiot.
"Silly humans and their greed. You will die a just death for wearing a dragon’s skin." Its voice was so deep and loud it made Evanna wince from being so close to the beast taking her higher into the skies.
"It was a gift," she gasped. Why was she talking to the dragon? She already knew what it wanted to do.
"A gift you proudly wear!" He roared, large blue-green eyes the size of her head glaring at her.
It was the first time she felt genuine fear. This was a beast Evanna had loved reading about but never did she ever want to face a dragon!
The creature squeezed tightly, halting her breathing, and she felt her bones beginning to shake from the pressure. Frowning in concentration, she focused on the dragon, searching its mind to unlock. The beast stopped flying, hovering in the clouds and extended its arm so she now faced it.
"You are no regular human.." Its hot breath fanned her face, its jagged teeth on show. "How foolish and arrogant to try and control me."
Evanna’s heart dropped, dread rippling across her skin in goose flesh as her face paled just before the dragon released her.
