Chapter 531: Chapter 531. Adaptability

Kailen sighed.

" A man can’t catch a break, huh.

Let’s hope this guy is not one of those chain villains in the novels I used to read way back on earth."

A chain villain was a term Kailen used for certain novel characters during when he read certain novels on earth. Chain villains were like this: if you killed them or humiliated them, their senior brother would come to avenge them.

If you killed that senior brother, another fellow behind that senior brother would come for revenge for the senior brother.

Very soon, you’d realize you are going against a whole gang just because you killed a single person.

Kailen was new to the academy. He didn’t want to start a commotion as soon as he got here. Also, he was not too strong at the moment.

He could not just start to throw his weight around whenever he liked. This academy was full of powerhouses. Who knew whether or not some intermediate stage Dao level lifeform was behind the bastard? Even if he were to get a mentor later, the mentors stayed out of student business. He would just be crushed.

He needed to be cautious and choose which provocations to react to carefully.

This was why he hoped the bastard who was trying to start trouble with him was not a chain villain.

Kailen’s eyes peered through the walls. The bastard was smiling, surrounded by an entourage: two men and a lady.

" Boss, even though he enrolled through a special slot, and those special slot enrollers are usually monsters, I think he’s still weak. A rank 1 beginner stage Dao level lifeform should not be difficult to handle for rank 7 beginner stage Dao level lifeforms like us," one of the males, a dwarf, sneered.

" Yeah, after today, we will have four more villas," one of the fellows, a female gnome, chuckled mischievously.

"Indeed. We can then let them live in their houses after we tame them, as long as they become our lackeys," another, a Treant with a buzz cut, added.

Kailen listened to the conversation. So this was what these bastards were up to, huh.

A glint of ruthlessness flashed through his eyes.

Kailen assessed the situation carefully.

" There are too many witnesses. Lots of people seem to want to observe the spectacle that will likely play out between me and them.

If I use spiritual power to kill them and they are chain villains, it will bring me unnecessary trouble," he mused further. "Everyone will be able to connect their death to me. News will travel to whatever senior brother or sister is behind them, and I may die before I know it. After all, since they are rank 7 beginner stage Dao level lifeforms, as long as they have another student backing them, that person will be at the intermediate stage Dao level, and I can’t handle someone like that. Let’s make an invisibility rune and mask our presence completely.

They will think I’ve bolted and definitely leave, having it in mind to come at another time."

A glint of ruthlessness flashed through Kailen’s eyes. "When they are at a place where there won’t be any witnesses, I will kill them."

The Time Dilation Artifact observed Kailen and nodded in satisfaction. This kid was becoming more and more likeable.

Kailen, oblivious to her thoughts, made an invisibility rune to mask his presence completely.

He observed. Outside the house, the eyes of the crowd squinted. Was the new student not coming out?

" Boss Hanson, I don’t sense his presence anymore," one of the lackeys, the dwarf lackey, said.

Hanson, the leader of the four, squinted his eyes. " I know. It seems the bastard used some strange means to bolt. Let’s head back. It’s not a big deal. After all, we’ve already tamed a couple of weaklings today. He will definitely return. We can come back tomorrow."

The group nodded. A glint of ruthlessness flashed through Hanson’s eyes. This new student thought he was outsmarting them. He didn’t know who he was messing with. Tomorrow, they will not come alone. They will come with their older brother. Let’s see if the new student and any other person they try to tame will use underhanded methods to run away then.

Kailen observed their facial expressions as they left. He could literally read Hanson’s thoughts from his emotional expressions thanks to emotional resonance.

" So they are chain villains, huh. Looks like I made the right call."

After they left, Kailen activated his elemental mirroring to track their movements.

If he used the law of space, they may sense the use of a law in the environs and react before he had the chance to kill them. He didn’t want to take that risk.

He followed them from a far distance in his invisible form quietly. They didn’t even sense a trace of his presence.

The group finally arrived before a teleportation gate that would lead to another locality in the district.

Kailen timed them very well. Just as they were about to enter the teleportation gate, Kailen’s spiritual power turned into invisible swords that pierced through their consciousness and erased their consciousness. The group of four had shocked and pained expressions on their faces as their eyes grew lifeless. They didn’t even know how they died.

Quickly, Kailen used shadow manipulation to make a shadow hand.

The shadow hand pushed their dead bodies through the teleportation gates. Their dead bodies fell out of the teleportation gates and fell down on the ground, at the locality they were returning to.

Soon, someone came across their dead bodies. The person casually walked away as if these kinds of things were a norm in the academy. An AI bot came across their dead bodies. It scanned the bodies, and the bodies disappeared.

By this time, Kailen had quietly gone back to his villa, leaving no traces of his actions behind.

At the same time, a few academy mentors who were old friends were watching something in a big living room.

They were all looking at a screen of what had just occurred between Kailen and the team of four, and Kailen’s method of dealing with them.

" It’s a pity that this kid cannot be mentored. He is really dangerous. To think he’d be this level-headed and dangerous. He has the mindset of a powerhouse. Is this person really 22 years old?"

"But this does not explain why the Principal and Vice Principal commanded us not to mentor him, right?"

" Yeah. I guess it has something to do with his backing."

"Absurd. Is he the first special slot enroller to have existed in the academy? Have we not mentored a couple of them in the past?"

" Well, from the information concerning the kid, he’s not like other special enrollers. They were all terrifying but this kid is something else... entirely. I suppose the principal and vice principal considered that, and assumed his backing is extremely terrifying and therefore, trying to mentor him will be an insult to that person."

" That makes a lot more sense now."

"Yeah. But I gotta say, this kid feels like he’s in his territory. He just arrived a few moments ago and he’s adapted quickly."

"Usually students have to struggle a bit to adapt to the environment even if they are geniuses."

" Indeed. What sort of gruesome environments has this kid found himself in, in the past?"

" If only it were possible to warn some of our mentees to not try and cause trouble for this kid. But due to the rune oaths, we cannot interfere in any way when it comes to how students handle each other."

" Indeed, we are only responsible for offering guidance concerning their abilities."

" Well, I suppose the academy will be more chaotic sooner or later than it already is, with the appearance of someone like this."

At the moment, Kailen headed towards his room . After taking a shower, he went to bed.
