Chapter 236: River Guardian

She resurfaced coughing and sputtering with hair plastered to her face. She broke through the surface of the water and breathed in as much air as possible into her lungs. Even though she was under the water for a few seconds, she almost lost her life! Coughing, she wiped her face and pushed her hair off.

"I AM ALIVE!" She shouted when she saw the two mers trying to reach her with all their might.

And that was when she saw it.

Because the cliff collapsed, it had diverted part of the river to one side, and water was already beginning to surge down the broken channel—toward the end of the forest.

When she saw that the water was drifting down on its own. Seeing this, her eyes lit up with manic joy!

"Is this what you call being favoured by the gods?"

On the bank, Yuan Ni was staring at the sight in amazement. He muttered, "She...did she just alter the terrain?" It was really surprising that she actually performed a large-scale terrain alteration.

Ruan Zeqiu dropped to one knee and stared at the channel that was flowing down the cliff. "It...it’s flowing down all the way to the tribe."

The python, however, was not impressed with its prey escaping its grasp. It rose from the debris, with one of its eyes bleeding. Fury was radiating from every scale on its body. The water rushed down faster, and the snake coiled as it started to slither down. The ground trembled with every move.

Ruan Chanchan was still waist-deep in the river when she felt something move behind her. And as soon as she raised her head and looked up, she froze. Because the python wasn’t looking at her. It was looking behind her. Suddenly, Ruan Chanchan’s heart lurched, and she turned to look behind her, just as water surged and the ground underneath shook.

Something massive shifted beneath the river, and this time, not only Ruan Chanchan but even the python took a step behind. Their hearts dropped simultaneously.

"Oh..." she whispered in a dreadful voice. "This is something new."

The river split, and something massive started to rise.

Water surged upward like it had taken personal offence at the audacity of those who had split it up. The water slowly rose as it started to split violently around a massive, rising shape. Ruan Chanchan was thrown backwards, landing flat on her backside with all the dignity of a damn potato. Even the python was sent back like it was some kind of little worm.

Ruan Chanchan raised her head and looked at the python, while the python raised its head and turned to look at her.

The two of them continued staring at one another before slowly, very slowly, turning to look at the front.

"Why...why?" She raised her head and looked at the heavens. "Why do I end up getting into trouble every time I go near water bodies? Tell me...is this some kind of sign!?" Ruan Chanchan was worried that maybe she and the water bodies were indeed against one another. Because the last time she was near a river, she ended up drowning in her attempt to save Yuan Ni, and this time, when she came to look for this river, she almost died once again.

She raised her head and looked at the thing in front of her.

What emerged from the water was not another python.

It was worse. Way worse.

Scales—smaller, darker, slick with algae—broke through the surface of the water, followed by a ridged spine and a head that looked like someone had taken a crocodile, stuffed it ten times its size, and then offended it deeply. The eyes of the thing glowed a dull, irritated gold.

Ruan Zeqiu, who was standing on the collapsing slope, went silent.

Yuan Ni blinked his eyes. "That," he said as calmly as he could. "Is the guardian of the river."

Ruan Zeqiu turned to look at Yuan Ni. "You sound very peaceful for someone who is facing the river guardian."

"I am screaming internally," Yuan Ni replied as he pointed at his legs that were shaking like a leaf in a storm. "I am just as scared as you. It’s just that I am afraid that if I scream, he would turn to look at us."

Behind them, the python hissed, but its voice was so low that it didn’t sound like it was threatening the big boss. In fact, it looked like it was dropping the white flag in front of the river guardian.

Ruan Chanchan raised her hand weakly as she realised that she might have offended someone; she shouldn’t have. "Hello? Hi. I know that this is awkward. But I am just here for sightseeing. If anything, he is the one who did this."

She pointed at the python, who raised his head with a surprised expression as if he couldn’t believe that this woman was throwing him under the boulder like this. He blinked his eyes and pointed at himself with his tail as if silently asking Ruan Chanchan if she was really talking about him.

And when Ruan Chanchan nodded, the python’s jaw fell open in shock.

The guardian opened its mouth and roared. His roar shook the valley, causing everyone to stumble backwards.

Ruan Chanchan slapped both hands over her ears. "Okay! Rude! No need to yell; I am right here. There is no need to raise your voice."

The python coiled back.

The river guardian locked its eyes with the python.

Even though the python didn’t roar back, the air around them suddenly went tense.

Ruan Zeqiu inhaled sharply. She turned to look at Yuan Ni and called him, "Yuan Ni... can you do something now?"

"There is nothing that I can do."

"What do you mean you cannot do anything?"

"They are arguing!" Yuan Ni called back in a low voice. "My grandmother taught me that I should never interfere when a guardian is angry."

At that very moment, the guardian roared again.

He paused, his voice getting even lower. "And this one is really angry."
