Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 270 - The test
After finishing reviewing the information, Suna removed the still functioning tablet and unplugged its power cable, preparing to take it with her.
But beneath the tablet, she noticed a silver card. It was completely free of dust, clearly having been pressed under the tablet from the very beginning. Beside it lay a note.
Suna picked up the card and obtained its information.
【Name: Grade A Authorisation ID Card (Unregistered)】
【Description: An authorization credential used aboard the Sanctuary. Such cards are normally bound to a player ID, but this one is an exception. It is an unregistered card that anyone can use, granting Grade A authorisation. Authorisation levels are: S, A, B, C, D.】
“So this is the authorisation card Xiao Ji mentioned?”
Suna examined the card carefully. It seemed to be made of metal, likely containing an embedded chip.
Less than three seconds after she picked it up, a transparent wall suddenly descended behind her, sealing her inside the small laboratory.
At the same time, a holographic projection appeared in front of the experimental desk. It was a red eyed woman, unmistakably Wei Qian.
This was clearly a video she had recorded earlier, meant to be triggered at this moment.
“I don’t know who you are, but since you’ve come here, you must pass my test.
You have a test paper in your hand. All the questions are multiple choice, some with multiple correct answers. There are fifty questions in total.
You have two hours to complete it. All the answers can be found in that tablet.
When you’re done, lay the paper out on the desk and I will check it.
If your score is below ninety, I’m sorry, but you’ll die here with me. I will vent the air in this room and activate laser cutting.”
“The countdown begins now. You have two hours!”
Wei Qian stood there like an examiner, motionless and expressionless, as a countdown timer appeared beside her. The atmosphere instantly became tense.
If Yang Yi were here, he would probably have smashed his way out.
To hell with taking an exam.
But Suna was completely different. Unhurried and calm, she instead grew interested in the holographic projection technology.
The projection was remarkably realistic. Even when touched, it showed no distortion or interference.
“Impressive technology,” Suna said.
She never hesitated to praise techniques she didn’t understand.
Only then did she turn her attention to the carefully prepared test paper and look at the first question.
【1. What poison did I die from?
A. Rat toxin
B. TetramineC. Arsenic trioxideD. Dichlorvos】
Suna narrowed her eyes, immediately grasping the deeper meaning behind the question, and chose to skip it.
The questions that followed were much simpler. All of them could be found in the tablet.
Many of them Suna could answer directly from memory.
Although she always considered herself more of a practitioner than a theorist, she had never lost at exams. And this was nothing more than an open book test.
The only real nuisance was Yang Yi constantly asking about what was going on inside.
Suna brushed him off each time, but if this dragged on, he would definitely force his way in.
She needed to finish quickly.
In less than thirty minutes, Suna had completed the test. Most questions were answered using her knowledge and recollection, largely related to biochemical subjects. Only a few required checking the tablet.
After finishing, she spread the test paper flat on the desk. A beam of light swept across it.
“Score… 100. Time used: 32 minutes and 17 seconds. You are exceptional.”
Wei Qian’s image suddenly raised her head, her gaze locking onto Suna.
“It seems you are a witch as well. That makes things much easier.
Most of my research results are stored in that robot. What’s on the tablet is only a portion.
You can connect the tablet to the robot. Not only will it charge, you’ll also be able to access the data inside.”
“Take that with you as well. The password is…”
The transparent protective wall behind Suna slowly rose, and the projection gradually faded away.
The reason Wei Qian had set up this test was likely to find a player who was also a witch to inherit her research, even though the odds were slim.
If someone couldn’t achieve a high score within a short time, there would probably have been a different speech waiting for them.
And if they couldn’t even answer the first question correctly… there likely would have been no speech at all.
Suna glanced around, rummaged through the drawers once more, and put everything she wanted to take into her bag of holding before leaving the room.
Just as she was about to go, Wei Qian’s voice sounded again from behind her.
“You need to be careful. There may be traitors among the players. Pay special attention to Beautiful Dream.”
The faint voice drifted from behind.
Suna turned around, but there was nothing there. She couldn’t tell whether it was a ghost speaking, or just an echo left behind by the recording.
She didn’t linger. She committed the warning to memory and headed towards the main hall of the laboratory.
As she neared the exit, she heard Yang Yi’s voice.
“So this robot of yours is pretty capable!
Come on, tell me what other numbers there are.
I’ll try a few flavours!”
At some point, Yang Yi had gotten quite friendly with Xiao Ji. He was standing in front of a refrigerator-like machine, having the robot call out item numbers.
“019 is honey pomelo tea. 020 is cola. 021 is lemon water. 022 is coffee…”
Standing beside Yang Yi, Xiao Ji’s indicator light flashed as it rattled off drink names one after another.
“These are all drinks. Is there any meat?”
“107 is stir fried beef with scallions. 108 is kung pao chicken. 109 is boiled sliced pork in chili oil. 110 is stir fried pork intestines…”
Xiao Ji skipped a large range of numbers and began listing dish names instead.
Yang Yi immediately entered a series of numbers and pressed confirm, then cracked his knuckles and waited.
A few dozen seconds later, a ding sounded. He opened the compartment at once. Inside were two home style dishes and two bottles of drinks.
Stir fried beef with scallions, kung pao chicken, honey pomelo tea, and coffee.
The moment he took them out, he couldn’t restrain himself and grabbed a piece of beef, popping it straight into his mouth.
“The flavour’s legit!”
Yang Yi couldn’t remember the last time he’d tasted beef.
Just then, Suna came out and saw the scene. Yang Yi immediately called out to her.
“You’re finally out! I just found a treasure. It’s called a food printer. You punch in a number and it produces the corresponding food. It’s insane!”
He slid the plates and drinks towards her, signaling for her to try some.
But she didn’t eat right away. Instead, she asked,
“What is it made from?”
“Organic matter,” Xiao Ji answered immediately.
“What kind of organic matter?”
“Mostly rats. Xiao Ji often picks up rats while cleaning.”
“Huh?”
Yang Yi’s face turned livid as he realised he had just eaten processed rat meat.
No wonder there had been a familiar off taste. He had thought the machine was malfunctioning.
The robot had clearly kept quiet on purpose.
“You did that on purpose!” Yang Yi snapped.
But Xiao Ji didn’t reply. It immediately rolled over to Suna and hid behind her, only then flashing its indicator light as it responded,
“Xiao Ji is just a robot. I only follow orders. You asked me to teach you how to use the food printer. I taught you how to use it. I did nothing wrong.”
“In what way do you look like a robot?” Yang Yi complained, seriously considering dismantling this piece of junk on the spot.
