Chapter 67: Forcing him

The next day, the local newspapers in Velharthe and all over the Empire were filled with news.

News covering the race grabbed the front pages of the newscasts, even more so because the previous record in this long-running race had been broken.

While other news stories dealt with the explosion heard the night before the race in the City of Velfast. The Kingdom seemed to be investigating, but the preliminary news remained to be confirmed: some magicians were battling.

Although many were suspicious about that claim, the destruction of the area and the lack of traces led them to believe that it had been so.

Among shocking news, there was one that did not go unnoticed among the curious and among journalists who made a lot of fuss about it.

The news of the Man in the Yellow Straw Hat being the number 1 among bettors in different bookmakers.

Being so wealthy, but without giving his name, many tried to speculate on his identity, but getting to a particular person was difficult. The Empire has many rich and powerful people.

Although they are not an overly powerful or wealthy Empire, they have many prominent people among their ranks.

But the news went around the entire Empire.

Those who won bets were jubilant, and those who lost were sad. But the mood could not have been as bad as it was for the members of the Ancient Moon House.

They were in a terrible state of mind, where their leader, Theos, had to be forced to borrow money from his sworn enemy.

The Northern houses paid no attention to him, and the Great Houses did not even respond to him. The Priestleys cared little; they could only go to the House of Shadows to apply.

They understood what this meant.

They would be indebted for a long time to their direct rival.

And they were going to take advantage of it.

"Although we have some financial problems because we lost a horse and thus the stakes that went with it, we should be able to lend to them. But the interest will be high." Jackvin said, smiling reassuringly, as he spoke to Theos and his people.

Theos frowned. "As long as you can help us, the interests can be negotiated properly."

"Haha, fine. But they’re not open to negotiations for certain amounts. How much is the loan they need? As old colleagues and gambling rivals, we’ll do our best to help you with the full loan amount."

Theos then pulled out a document and put it on the table between them. "It’s not too much. We need 2 billion. Our proposal, which we made reasonable for you, is 15.3% semi-annual interest. We will pay the 2 billion in 3 semi-annual installments."

It sounded like a good proposal and, in fact, it was.

They would pay off the debt in just 1.5 years, with interest totaling more than 900 million.

To win it on a single loan was amazing.

They had really done well this time.

But it also showed their desperation, although they didn’t show it.

Jackvin grabbed the document and flipped through it quickly.

"This deal looks amazing for us, " he said, and then he showed it to the two leaders behind him. "What do you guys think?" he asked.

Dicson and Iseni looked at each other, then nodded. One grabbed a pen and underlined something, changing some of the content to something else.

"We don’t want to abuse you, so if you agree to this small change, then we can negotiate the amount to lend." They both said.

Jackvin said nothing about it and passed the document to Theos again. He agreed with both of them.

Theos didn’t understand what they were referring to, so he read the contents, saw what they had changed, and frowned.

"Isn’t this excessive?" He asked.

"Excessive? Jackvin looked at the document and then smiled. "I think it’s fine. 30.6% interest semi-annually. That’s quite reasonable."

Theos didn’t find this funny.

Increasing the semi-annual interest to double, when the interest they were already paying was half of the total borrowed, was obviously excessive.

Theos knew this. They wanted to take advantage of this.

’Maybe I can flip it somehow...’ He thought and grabbed the document. He returned the previous 15.3%, but wrote a few more things.

"How about this? We’ll give you this percentage of those one-off companies to supplant that excess interest." He spoke.

Jackvin checked before responding. "I don’t like it. Let’s go with 30.6%. We can then negotiate the rest, " he said, but then paused. "Unless you will give me a percentage of those two companies."

Before Theos could speak, Iseni decided to jump into the conversation.

"Mr. Theos, we respect you and want to help you in this. As old rivals, we know the difficult situation you are in. This 30.6% is because we would also have certain problems if we lent you that amount, even if it is for 1.5 years, " he said. "I think it’s fair." He added.

Theos stared at him. ’Damn you.’

He realized they knew perfectly well how desperate they were on Ancient Moon.

This was still putting them in a desperate situation. At 30.6% semi-annual interest and having to pay it in 3 installments, they practically had to pay 4 billion Jens.

It was excessive, considering that the Ancient Moon House does not cost much more than that.

While it is true that these types of illegal houses produce much more money than they cost, the amount is still excessive for them.

But...

They had no choice.

They were in a tricky situation, and if this dragged on, they could get into trouble with many gamblers. And they were powerful gamblers, not just any people.

Whereas they no longer had a choice. Everyone but the House of Shadows was ignoring it.

This was their last bullet, and they needed to hit it.

So Theos had to clench his fists under the table and bite his teeth.

"...Okay." He said, his mouth seemed to twitch a little as he looked up. "We’ll take the deal. 2 billion loan with a semi-annual interest rate of 30.6%." He spoke.

Jackvin smiled.

"It seems Mr. Theos is always someone worthy to negotiate with." He spoke. "Now it’s time to negotiate the amount to be loaned."

"Negotiate?" Theos looked confused.

What was there to negotiate, if they had clearly agreed that it was 2 billion?

But Jackvin nodded.

"Two billion is a very high amount, after all." He replied and looked at Iseni. "In the banks we currently have 1.5 billion available, correct? That amount we could lend you."

Iseni nodded. "That is correct, Mr. Jackvin. We could still get you an additional 200, but it would be terrible for us for a few months."

"Ah? What are you talking about?" Theos asked, elated and annoyed.

"Obviously what we can lend you." Jackvin replied. "Two billion is still too much. We don’t have that much."

"Ah?" Theos almost stood up and smacked them upside the head.

Do they think they’re idiots? That they ran out of people or spies? Crap. They were absolutely sure that the guys in front of them had just charged a large amount of money for murdering Louis.

How could they possibly say they were out of money now?

Theos trembled slightly. ’So, in the end, it’s all to back us into a corner.’ He thought.

For a moment, his countenance darkened.

They needed the two billion by this very week. If they couldn’t get that amount out in this short period of time, they would be in trouble.

That was why they were so desperate.

But if they could only get 1.5 billion of that, then what was the point of paying 30.6% interest?

Now, the thing is that without that 1.5 billion, they would be worse off. With that, they could at least settle and try to rush certain sales shipments to get the remaining 500 million, but without those...

They had no way out.

"Do you really want to take it to that extreme?" Theos asked, glaring at Jackvin and Iseni. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

They both simply smiled.

"What do you mean, Mr. Theos?"

’Shit.’ As much as he wanted to curse them, he had to swallow his words, bite down on his pride, and nod.

"Right." He said, his teeth quivering and clacking together. "Then make it 1.5 billion."

"With the same interest." Jackvin stressed, forcing Theos to grovel for a nod practically.

Jackvin and the House of Shadows had shown their superiority against the House of the Ancient Moon, so he smiled.

It had been a long time since they had seen it, and it all came about because they had completed an important mission.

Jackvin thought he could still pull something else out and pressure the Ancient Moon House even more, but decided against it. This already guaranteed them many things, starting with the fact that the Ancient Moon House would now be tied to the House of Shadows.

That would already give them the upper hand.

Now the currents were irreversible.

The House of Shadows would completely take control of the South Zone of the Industrial District and could even aim higher in the entire District or even the City.

Jackvin smiled. Iseni felt triumphant.

KNOCK*

KNOCK*

The sound brought them all out of their fantasies and nightmares.

Jackvin looked at Iseni and then at Dicson, thinking they had called someone. After receiving their refusal, he told the guards to open up; they had been watching the exchange.

Just then a man in a yellow straw hat walked in.

"I can give you that 2 billion you need without interest."
