Chapter 703: Win You Over

Kafka glanced around the kitchen, the morning light casting soft shadows across the counters, the room quiet except for the faint hum of the fridge.

His eyes swept the space, checking for any sign of Abigaille, but it was just him and Olivia, her body still close to his, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt.

"Hey, Mom." He said, his hand resting on the table, his gaze settling on her. "Where’s Mom? I haven’t seen her all morning. She go out or something?"

Olivia snapped out of her daze, her body straightening as she blinked, her hands pausing mid, fidget. She looked at Kafka, her heart still racing from their kiss, her mind flickering back to the heavy conversation she’d had with Abigaille earlier. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"Oh, um, Abi..." She said, her voice soft but steadying, her fingers brushing her hair back. "Yeah, after we talked this morning, she said she needed some time to clear her head. She said she was going to visit someone and left pretty early."

Her gaze dropped, her hands clasping together as she thought for a moment, her brow furrowing like she was choosing her next words carefully. Then she looked back at Kafka, her voice hesitant but probing.

"Actually, Kafi, while we were talking...I don’t know, it was weird. Abi said all those things about you, about the family, but it didn’t feel like she wanted to say them."

"...It was like she was forcing herself, you know? Not natural, not like her at all."

Kafka’s heart skipped, his body tensing slightly as he wondered if Olivia was onto their plan, if Abigaille’s "villain" act had been too obvious. He kept his face neutral, his fingers drumming lightly on the table, his mind racing to steer the conversation.

Olivia’s voice grew quieter, her hands fidgeting again as she continued, her eyes searching his.

"I mean, yesterday, Abi was all....intense, you know? All seductive and overwhelming, like some kind of vixen. I could barely keep up with her." Her cheeks flushed, her body leaning forward slightly as she remembered Abigaille’s bold actions, her brazen touch. "But today, when we talked, she was back to the Abi I’ve always known, sweet, cheerful, blushing like we were back in college."

"Even when she was talking about you, about how close you two are, she kept getting all embarrassed, like she couldn’t help it. It was so different from last night, and I just...I don’t get why she’d act like that."

Kafka’s mind clicked, sensing an opportunity to reinforce their plan without tipping his hand.

"Hey, Mom, don’t overthink it." He waved his hands, his voice light and dismissive, his grin easy to throw her off. "That’s just how Mom is, you know? Most of the time, she’s all sweet and bubbly, blushing over every little thing that’s her normal mode, always has been. You’ve known her forever, right? That’s the Mom from high school, tripping over her own words, giggling like a kid."

He leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone.

"But when someone gets too close to me, like, really close, she flips a switch. Turns into that possessive, domineering succubus you saw last night."

"And it’s because she loves me so damn much, Mom. She gets all protective, wants to keep me to herself...That’s when the claws come out."

"Oh, I see." Olivia’s eyes widened, her hands pausing as she nodded slowly, her body relaxing as his words sank in. "That makes sense, I guess. So she only gets like that when she’s...worked up? Like, when she’s jealous or something?"

Her heart warmed, trusting Kafka’s explanation completely, her mind piecing it together like a puzzle clicking into place. She then let out a small laugh, her body easing as she leaned closer, her voice tinged with relief.

"Okay, good. I’m glad it’s not all the time. Beause, wow, that Abi from last night? She was intense. It’d be tough to deal with her if she was like that every day."

"...And honestly, Kafi, it’d be really hard to, um, win you over if she’s always that domineering. Like, Impossible, you know—"

Her words slipped out before she could catch them, her cheeks flushing as she realized what she’d said, her hands flying to her mouth and Kafka’s smirk widened as he caught what she said, his body leaning closer, his voice a teasing drawl as he caught her slip.

"Win me over, huh?" He said, his fingers tapping her arm, his eyes glinting with mischief. "What’s that about, Mom? You saying there’s some kind of competition going on between you and Mom? Trying to ’win’ me?" He leaned even closer, his voice dropping to a playful whisper, his hand brushing her wrist. "Come on, you don’t just say something like that and expect me to let it slide. What’s the deal?"

"No, no, it’s nothing!" Olivia’s heart raced, her body jerking back as her cheeks burned, her hands waving frantically. "I didn’t mean anything by it, Kafi, I swear! I was just...blabbering, you know? Just talking nonsense, don’t read into it!"

Her body tensed, her heart pounding as she tried to backtrack, but Kafka’s grin only grew, his eyes locked on hers, unrelenting.

"Oh, come on, Mom." He said, his voice a playful taunt. "There’s gotta be something there. No way you’d drop a line like ’win me over’ without a reason."

"...What’s cooking in that head of yours? You and Mom got some secret contest going on for me? Tell me, I can handle it." His body leaned closer, his grin daring her to admit it.

Olivia’s hands shot to his face, pressing against his cheeks, her voice a blend of flustered panic and sternness, her body trembling with embarrassment.

"Kafi, stop it!" She said, her tone trying to be strict but faltering into a shy squeak, her fingers squishing his face. "You need to listen to your mother, okay? If I say it’s nothing, it’s nothing! No competition, no nothing, just me talking nonsense!"

"...So, don’t make me repeat myself, young man!"

Her eyes were wide, her cheeks flushed, her body leaning over him, but her strictness melted under her own fluster, her hands shaking as she held his face.

Seeing this show of retaliation, Kafka’s eyes softened, his grin turning fond as he looked up at her, his voice a low chuckle.

"God, you’re adorable, Mom." He said, his hands covering hers, his fingers warm and gentle. "Fine, fine, I’ll let it go. For now. But you’re not fooling me, Mom. There’s something brewing. and I’m gonna figure it out."

Seeing that he was letting her off the hook, Olivia let out a sigh of relief, her hands dropping from his face, her body pulling back slightly, her heart still racing.

"Alright, Mom, let’s move on." Deciding to shift gears, Kafka then leaned forward, resting his elbows on the kitchen table, his voice light and curious. "This is your first official day in town, right? Got any big plans? Gonna meet some folks, explore the village, see the sights? Or you just chilling here all day?" His eyes sparkled with interest, eager to hear her plans.

"Oh, Kafi, I’m actually super excited about today!" Olivia’s face lit up, her body bouncing slightly as she stepped closer, her voice bubbling with excitement. "I was thinking of wandering around town, maybe even heading out to the countryside to check out all the amazing plants around here."

"You know, one of the reasons I wanted to move here with Abi was because this place is bursting with gorgeous vegetation, rare flowers, unique trees, all that stuff."

Her hands waved animatedly, her eyes shining as she launched into her passion.

"Like, there’s this patch of silverbell trees I read about, with these delicate white blooms that only flower for a few weeks, and I heard there’s a grove of wild orchids out by the river, super rare, and oh, the witherwoods!...They’re supposed to have this pinkish hue here that you don’t see everywhere, and I just—"

She froze mid-sentence, her cheeks flushing as she realized she’d been rambling, her hands dropping to her sides.

"Oh gosh, I’m sorry, Kafi." She said, her voice softening, a shy laugh escaping her. "I-I didn’t mean to go on like that. I know it’s probably boring, all this plant talk...I-I just get carried away when I’m excited about something...It’s a bad habit, I guess. Just tell me to stop if I do it again, okay?" Her fingers fidgeted, her body swaying slightly, an obvious show of embarrassment and eagerness in her posture.

"You do this with Mom too, don’t you? Go off on these nerdy rants?" Kafka grabbed an apple from the table, taking a bite as he grinned, his voice warm and teasing. "How’s she handle it when you’re listing off tree names like a botanist on a mission?" He leaned back, the apple crunching in his hand, his eyes glinting with amusement as he watched her squirm.

Olivia’s blush deepened, her fingers twisting together, her voice shy but honest.

"Yeah, I do, all the time. I-It’s kind of my thing. Whenever I get into something I love, like plants or architecture or even old books, I just...keep going. I’m a bit of a nerd, I guess."

"Abi’s also used to it. She just nods and smiles, maybe laughs a little, but she never stops me. I think she likes it, or at least she’s nice enough to pretend she does." Her voice grew softer, her heart warming at the thought of Abigaille’s patience.

Kafka nodded, his grin widening as he took another bite of the apple, his voice playful. "Oh, it makes sense now. Mom’s just sitting there, nodding like a bobblehead, probably because you look so damn cute when you’re geeking out like that." He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers, his tone affectionate. "I mean, come on, Mom, you’re standing here, all excited about orchids and whatever-woods, blushing like a kid who just found a new toy...It’s adorable."

"Of course Mom lets you ramble, she’s probably too charmed to stop you...And you know what? I don’t mind either. Go off about whatever you want, I’m all ears. It’s too cute to miss." He winked, his body relaxed but his gaze warm and inviting.

"Kafi, stop it!" Olivia’s cheeks burned, her hands flying to her face, her voice a flustered squeak. "You can’t just keep on calling me cute like that, no matter what I say or do! I’m just talking about plants, it’s not...it’s not adorable or anything!"

Her body swayed, her fingers pressing against her cheeks, but a smile tugged at her lips, her heart swelling with happiness at his words.

"B-But okay, fine, if you really don’t mind, I’ll keep talking about stuff like that...It’s nice to know I can share it with you without boring you to death."

Her voice softened, her body easing closer, her eyes bright with gratitude for having such a caring son who was willing to listen to his mother’s rants and rambles.
