Global Game: Developing a Knight Clan-Chapter 118 - 116: Changes in Dawn City, the Underground City Appears
Dawn City!
Just outside the Temple Square, standing at its edge, one could take in the entirety of Dawn City.
To the right was the residential area for Dawn City’s slaves, also known as the Right City.
The Left City housed the Commoners and the commercial district, grander and more bustling in scale than the Right City.
York stood at the edge of the massive Temple Square, which spanned over three square kilometers. At this moment, his sense of accomplishment and ownership was at its peak.
Meanwhile, both sides of the Divine Hall were lined with soldiers on duty.
These soldiers were responsible for both protecting the Teleportation Array and maintaining Order for the people and Demon Beasts coming and going through it.
Over the past year, most of Dawn City’s soldiers had completed one-on-one Blood Covenants.
In other words, most of these soldiers had their own Tierless Demon Beast.
Some had wolves, others had leopards—all sorts of creatures.
Therefore, it wasn’t just Human Race soldiers maintaining Order here, but Demon Beasts as well.
The one in charge of managing the Demon Beasts was the Shadow Wind Dragon Eagle.
And on the other side of the Teleportation Array, in the Underground Space on the Oakland Continent, the Unihorned Demon Bear stood guard.
Standing on the square, humans seemed incredibly small.
Just then, a dense horde of Demon Beasts suddenly surged out of the giant Teleportation Array—which had been expanded to a width of 250 meters after Lince reached Tier Seven.
This was a pack of wolf-like Demon Beasts escorting Magic Crystals!
It was another regular shipment of resources from the Mountain Range Earth Dragon.
York was already used to seeing these Demon Beasts delivering resources.
Without York even needing to act, the Demon Beasts under the Shadow Wind Dragon Eagle’s command guided the newcomers to pile the Magic Crystals onto the square.
Then, Human Commoners working as laborers would carry the Magic Crystals into the great Divine Hall built into the mountainside.
The entire process was, of course, guided and supervised by soldiers.
"It looks like that old tortoise Amos sent fewer Magic Crystals this time than last."
"If you ask me, the old coot isn’t even trying."
The Shadow Wind Dragon Eagle landed, its feet touching the ground. Standing over ten meters tall, it unconsciously complained to York via Spiritual Transmission.
"’Old tortoise?’ You’ve got some nerve! He’s a Tier Nine Peak existence and a Wise Person who has lived for over ten thousand years."
"Besides, he was one of Your Majesty’s earliest supporters. Dragon Eagle, you’d better only say things like that to me. If Phemos finds out, I bet it’ll order a few of its High Tier Magical Beasts to beat you up."
A strange expression came over York’s face as he listened. ’It feels like this eagle has gotten really full of itself since receiving the Divine Dragon Bloodline. Back when it didn’t know Your Majesty’s identity, it was so cautious. It never would have dared to say such bold things.’
"Phemos?"
The Dragon Eagle flinched, looking left and right before peering down at York on the ground.
"That big, clumsy bear will never know."
"York, you won’t tell it, will you? We’re like real brothers."
York was speechless. He looked at the Dragon Eagle and shook his head helplessly.
"You really need to fix that loose tongue of yours."
"Even His Majesty would never call Lord Amos an ’old tortoise.’ You should show some respect."
"I’m afraid His Majesty will punish you before Phemos even gets a chance to cause you trouble."
The Dragon Eagle grumbled to itself upon hearing York’s words.
"I only talk like this in front of you, York!"
"Have you ever seen me act like this in front of anyone else?"
"York, you can’t go snitching on me!"
"Besides, Amos really is sending fewer and fewer Magic Crystals each time. Am I wrong?"
The Dragon Eagle and York both possessed the Gale Cyan Dragon Bloodline, and they had known each other for nearly two years.
After all, whenever Lince summoned him, it was always the Dragon Eagle that carried York.
So, their relationship was indeed closer than his was with the other Demon Beasts.
However, York shook his head at the Dragon Eagle’s words.
"Actually, you can’t blame Earth Dragon Amos for this."
"The war between the Beast Tide and the Kingdom has reached its final stage, so the consumption of Magic Crystals must be huge."
"This is to be expected. I just don’t know what the final outcome of the negotiations between the Human Countries and the Demon Beast Mountain Range will be."
"And then there’s the trouble of figuring out how the Swamp Territory will explain things to the outside world, and how we’ll evade any potential reconnaissance from High Tier Magical Beasts."
"Even if the Church helps with the process, the Truth Church’s influence is limited to within the Kingdom."
"If someone from the Empire shows up, His Majesty might have to step in to resolve it in the end."
"Relying on His Majesty time and time again... I feel like such a failure. I’m just dragging His Majesty down."
"Without His Majesty’s Divine Favor, I even wonder... what would I even be?"
York’s expression turned inexplicably melancholic.
’Perhaps at every stage of life, people can’t help but feel sentimental, right?’
The Dragon Eagle, however, shot York a disdainful glance.
"This is why you humans are so melodramatic!"
"Just being alive is a great thing. Why do you think so much?"
"Since His Majesty chose us, that’s our good fortune. Even if one day His Majesty has no more use for us, there’s nothing to complain about."
"Isn’t that what living is all about?"
"My five hundred years of life have taught me that a Demon Beast’s purpose is to eat its fill and live! Then live, and continue to eat its fill!"
"I think you’re just too well-fed! Why don’t you take a look at how those human slaves live? Or even those Tierless Demon Beasts that could die at any moment?"
...
York was at a loss for words.
But as crude as the words were, the reasoning was sound.
’Yes, everything I have now, didn’t it all come from Divine Favor? Without it, I would have died long ago! There’s no point in speaking of hypotheticals.’
Thinking of this, York suddenly let out a self-deprecating smile.
But just then, York’s expression suddenly went slack!
The next moment, under the Dragon Eagle’s quizzical gaze, York said abruptly:
"Quick! Dragon Eagle, take me to the mountain peak outside the Left City."
"His Majesty has bestowed another miraculous object!"
"And this time, it’s something incredible!"
York’s face was alight with excitement.
When the Shadow Wind Dragon Eagle heard that York, the Holy Son, had received another Oracle, it didn’t dare to delay.
It immediately let York jump onto its back, and then it flew out of the Divine Hall.
But at the same time, the Dragon Eagle was puzzled. ’Isn’t His Majesty resting in the deepest part of the Divine Hall? Is he bestowing a Miracle without even showing himself? Just sending a message to York?’
The Dragon Eagle couldn’t quite figure it out, but it didn’t ask any questions.
And just as the Dragon Eagle carried York out of the Divine Hall, the entire mountain range where Dawn City was located began to shake.
A continuous RUMBLING sound echoed.
But the earthquake-like tremors weren’t very strong.
"What’s happening?"
"Are they building another large structure on the mountain?"
For Dawn City, major tremors from time to time were no longer anything new.
After all, the construction of Dawn City over the past year had caused quite a bit of commotion.
And as many people in Dawn City were discussing the tremors,
A stone structure suddenly began to materialize out of thin air on the mountain peak.
The structure seemed to emerge from underground.
It appeared against the rock face, simultaneously smoothing the surrounding cliff walls until they were perfectly flat.
Against the rock face, eight stone pillars, each over a hundred meters tall, also appeared.
The pillars looked as if they were carved into the rock face itself, and they were covered in many seemingly sacred engravings and pictures.
Below the pillars on the rock face was a massive terrace.
In the center of the terrace, a circular array pattern appeared, constantly emitting a kind of clear, bright light upwards.
Unlike the people in Dawn City below, unable to witness this spectacle, York, on the Dragon Eagle’s back, watched the scene unfold with a frenzied excitement.
’An Underground City... Professionals. The death rate might be high, but if we’re careful in the early stages, it shouldn’t be a huge problem!’
After learning everything about the lower-level Underground City from the Oracle, York had already started thinking rapidly.
’How can I make the best use of this Underground City?’
And he already had a preliminary idea.
’Since a normal person awakens a random profession just by killing a single Demon from the Underground City, then the first batch of soldiers or Commoners to enter will only be required to kill one Demon. Just enough to awaken their Professional panel. Then they can return immediately.’
Although this would waste some of the Underground City’s one hundred daily entry slots, it would allow them to fully leverage the Underground City’s advantages later on.
’Once waves of soldiers have awakened their professions and been sorted into combat, support, and even life-skill professions, then when the second wave goes in, we can minimize the death rate of the ’Adventurers.’ Of course, all ’Adventurers’ who want to enter the Underground City must undergo preliminary combat training. Weapons and equipment—nothing can be spared. I have to reduce Dawn City’s losses to the absolute minimum.’
Besides, this so-called Underground City was, after all, a miraculous creation that could only be born of this world.
’So, there’s no better way to find out what to watch out for than by asking the natives. And Dawn City happens to have such people right now. Unlike the ignorant slaves who were raised like livestock by the Giant Demons, the few hundred ’wild’ humans we took in earlier haven’t lost all their heritage. Some of the elders among them even know the specifics of how this world was over a hundred years ago. It’s impossible for them not to know about Underground Cities.’
Thinking of this, York immediately returned to the City Lord’s Mansion after surveying the Underground City on the peak.
At the same time, York immediately sent someone to summon those native humans to the City Lord’s Mansion.
York needed to learn as many details about Professionals as possible.
He also needed intelligence on the monsters in the Underground City.
Even if the information was scarce, it could be life-saving for those who would venture inside later.
York was incredibly curious. ’This is different from the Extraordinary System of the Oakland Continent.’
There was just one small regret.
’Humans who have already become Transcendents—and even Demon Beasts—cannot enter the Underground City. Otherwise, my own Knights could have used the Underground City to grow stronger quickly. What a pity.’
Still, the situation wasn’t bad. At least with the Underground City, York could already envision a day when he could cultivate a large number of Professionals.
Such a Miracle was too important for the newly established Dawn City!
However, York was also a little confused.
’How does His Majesty possess the power to create an Underground City, something only the gods of this world can make? But if I can’t figure it out, then I can’t figure it out! There are too many things I don’t understand; this is just one more. In any case, I just need to know that everything His Majesty does is right.’
