Chapter 299: Chapter 296: Rune Language

"Official voter?"

Bai Pu was taken aback.

A Mid-level Awakened typically only obtains a seed blessed by a deity, carrying a trace of the Divine Envoy’s will, to guide the Awakened at critical moments.

This is a Preparatory Voter.

The number of Preparatory Voters is many, but out of ten, not even one may successfully turn official.

Bai Pu looked at the voter named Rosen, whose face was hidden behind a gaping skull mask, obscuring his true appearance.

He wore pale bone armor, exuding an uncomfortable aura of death, causing the Thorn Recruits around him to subconsciously give way, opening up a large area.

"Which deity is he an official voter for?" Bai Pu asked softly.

"That’s hard to say." Yemang shrugged, "Here’s a free piece of advice, Mr. Gangxin... In the Spirit Realm, unless necessary, don’t inquire about the deity behind other voters or Preparatory Voters.

"Because deities have alliances and enemies. Without knowing the deity behind them, we can cooperate with voters of opposing deities, but knowing it and still cooperating is betrayal, and will be punished by the Divine Envoy."

Bai Pu nodded; as he was working alone, he didn’t mind much.

"He is a voter of the great Lord of Death." The neighboring Octopus-headed Mo Shate suddenly spoke, "The Lord of Death is also an ally deity to the Master of Suffering."

Mo Shate spoke with a sense of superiority, "However, Lord Rosen need not take action. Once we enter the Lost City, Bogar and I can handle you heretics!"

Beside him, the shark-toothed Bogar revealed his blatant provocation in his fish eyes.

Yemang chuckled lightly.

Metarica nearby glared at Bogar ungraciously.

Amidst the tense atmosphere, the voice of the Gilder rang out.

"Devout believers!

"Above the Divine Gifted Heavenly Pit, a Lost City floats. The prophecy indicates that 7 Holy Artifacts will appear in this Land of Divine Blessings! This is the highest number since the founding of the Thorn Church, even matching the church’s total inventory of Holy Artifacts! Look!"

With a grand wave of the Gilder’s sleeve, a rich Holy Wave Power Mimicry transformed into a splendid, floating city’s 3D phantom.

At the center of the floating city, at the top of a tower, seven bubble-enclosed light clusters appeared.

Through the light, the items inside could be faintly seen—necklaces, axes, jars... Evidently, these are the seven Holy Artifacts.

The crowd below was abuzz, clearly stunned by the number of Holy Artifacts.

Bai Pu, being an outsider, felt little, but the local Thorn Recruits were well-aware. Normally, only one Holy Artifact would appear at the Land of Divine Blessings.

The Gilder’s voice resounded, continuing:

"Holy Artifacts are not easily obtained, for they are sealed by powerful ancient seals.

"Believers, you must enter the Lost City, defeat the monsters inside, and collect a type of divine rune called ’Rune Characters!’ Then assemble them into ’Rune Language.’

"Obtain the Rune Language, and you’ll have the qualification to teleport to the Holy Artifact Hall and unseal the Holy Artifacts!

"Every new recruit who retrieves a Holy Artifact will be personally honored by Our Lady of Thorns! This is the highest glory!"

A Preparatory Voter immediately raised a hand: "Great Gilder, may I ask how the Rune Language is assembled? Is there any necessary order? We’ve never heard of such a thing."

The Gilder pondered briefly, then said solemnly, "The Rune Language is beyond your comprehension and learning! Here, I have a sequence and fixed arrangement of the Rune Language to distribute to you."

With a wave, the black-robed monks handed out sheepskin scrolls to each participating Thorn Recruit.

Simultaneously, the Gilder warned, "These sheepskin scrolls recording the Rune Language are marked with your respective numbers. When leaving the Lost City, present these numbers to prove your identity."

Some Preparatory Voters wondered why this was necessary.

The Gilder explained, "Because the range of the Divine Gifted Heavenly Pit is vast, the Lost City’s transmission entrances are numerous, making it difficult for the church’s power to completely seal it off. There’s a risk of someone sneaking in to spy on the Holy Artifacts, like those claiming to be the ’Thorn Cutters’ of the blasphemer organization.

"However, the Lost City only has one exit! I’ll personally lead a team to block at the exit."

Bai Pu had a question: this method isn’t secure. What if the Thorn Cutters snatch the sheepskin scrolls inside the Lost City?

This query vanished as soon as he received the sheepskin scroll.

Bai Pu’s scroll was labeled as number 17.

He followed the bishops’ and priests’ instructions, dripping a drop of blood on the number "17," causing it to radiate light, imprinting a golden "17" on his forehead.

Bai Pu felt as if his forehead had been seared by a branding iron. Yet this bit of pain was insignificant to the Thorn Recruits and voters present.

[You have obtained the Gilded Brand.]

A simple notification arose, yet Bai Pu felt an overwhelming sense of being watched, as if under a surveillance camera.

This was purely based on Bai Pu’s perception.

It seemed the Gilded Brand not only served to record the number but also to monitor.

"Apparently, the Thorn Church is well aware that not every outsider is trustworthy. Hence, they use this method to monitor everyone’s actions. Anyone who obtains a Holy Artifact cannot escape and will be intercepted by the Gilder at the exit."

Bai Pu opened the sheepskin scroll and saw 104 patterns of Rune Characters, each marked with a number.

On the far right of the scroll, seven Rune Language combinations were noted.

For instance, "Rune Characters 1 + 3 + 9 + 28" could form a piece of Rune Language.

Bai Pu attempted to memorize the patterns of the Rune Characters by sheer memory, yet he failed—barely a second after looking away from the Rune Characters, he forgot what he had just memorized.

"Is it really that mystical?"

Bai Pu remembered getting the Rune Text Clay Tablet, with its illegible text he had once dismissed as Ghost Talisman, having scanned over it quickly.

Reflecting now, given his memory, even a quick glance should have been enough to memorize the clay tablet’s contents! Yet recalling now, there’s utterly no trace.

"No wonder we can’t comprehend or learn this language... It must be the divine language," Bai Pu thought to himself.

Bai Pu carefully observed as the Thorn Recruits around him drip blood with ease, allowing the Gilded Brand to leave a number on their foreheads.

Blood Spider was number 30.

Mo Shate was number 4, and Yemang was number 2. Both had very early numbers.

As for Rosen, the official voter, his number was conspicuously... number 1!
