Global Disaster: I Will Slay Gods In This Second Chance!-Chapter 66: A Leech
After a while, Seiji and Namita walked out of the house.
The two of them were silent.
Seiji stared at the ground with a blank gaze.
Namita glanced at him, sighing inwardly.
He took out two sticks of cigarettes from his pocket. As they walked, he handed the cigarette to Seiji.
Seiji was startled, feeling something land on his shoulder.
He shifted his gaze and saw a cigarette on his left.
He glanced at Namita with a frown. But before he could speak, he was immediately silenced.
"Take it."
Namita insisted calmly, looking him in the eye.
Seiji fell silent.
But after a brief pause, he shakily took the cigarette.
"..."
He didn’t say anything, simply holding the cigarette between his fingers.
"You don’t mind that I saw all that, do you?"
Namita asked off-handedly, lighting up his cigarette.
But before Seijin could answer, he shrugged.
"Well, you took one of my cigarettes, so it’s quits. Rule of the adults."
"..."
Seiji paused, staring at Namita in a strange way.
Namita shrugged, also lighting up the cigarette on Seiji’s fingers.
Woosh!
Seiji stared at the slowly burning tip of his cigarette.
A wisp of smoke rose, drifting quietly with the mist.
"... Not like I can do anything about it."
He muttered.
Silently, he put the cigarette to his lips, taking a slow drag.
For a brief moment, his thoughts vanished, replaced by a sense of calmness.
The heavy smoke alternated between hot and cold, smooth and rough.
Heat brushed against his throat, making him hitch slightly.
But at the same time, his expression lightened considerably, like a cold shower after a terrible night at work.
His mind momentarily halted, the chaos stilling.
The unreleased emotions in his heart quietly slipped past his mouth, drifting away with the release of his breath.
Seiji slowly exhaled, glancing at the cigarette in his hand.
"Your first time?" Namita asked casually.
Seiji raised his head, then slightly shook his head. "No, I used to be a chain smoker as well."
"Used to be?" Namita mused. "Why quit?"
"I... don’t know," Seiji muttered. "It didn’t hit the right way anymore." 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Namita glanced at him. "How about this time?"
Seiji fell silent, leaving the question unanswered.
After that exchange, the two of them fell silent, walking deeper into the mist.
As they walked, Namita suddenly shifted his gaze, sensing something from a distance.
His mouth opened slightly, but then closed, seemingly uncertain.
Unaware of this, Seiji took another drag, letting out a heavy wave of smoke.
"What do you think of people who are too responsible for their own good?"
He suddenly asked, his gaze fixed on the front.
Namita wasn’t able to answer right away, slowly turning his gaze to the front.
Seiji patiently waited for his answer.
Namita thought for a brief moment, then replied slowly.
"Great people. I don’t think I could ever be one."
Seiji glanced at the cigarette in Namita’s hand. "I can tell."
"You’re acting like you don’t have one on your hand," Namita mused, his eyes seemingly unfocused.
"Never said I was responsible either," Seiji chuckled, then he paused. A brief silence hung in the air before he continued again: "But I do know someone like that."
"My brother... he’s the most responsible person I’ve ever known. Smart, popular, and talented."
Graduated from a top university and got a high-paying job. Helped his family, friends, and relatives. He was like a star."
As he spoke, his eyes shone with nostalgia.
Namita didn’t interrupt, letting him speak.
He tried his best to keep the uncertainty in his heart while listening to Seiji, using the man’s words as a distraction.
"But stars also fall, you know? That’s why there are shooting stars. I guess that was my shooting star."
Seiji said, his words dripping with mockery.
He paused, then continued.
"One day, he got into a car accident. He was left paralyzed by the crash. His face was disfigured. The next day, he got laid off from his job, and when he woke up, his doctor told him any hopes for recovery were practically non-existent."
"But perhaps the most terrible part isn’t even the crash, or him being left paralyzed, it was the reaction of those around him."
Seiji laughed lightly, blood leaking through the corner of his lips.
"And you know what everyone around him did that was so terrible?"
"They abandoned him. The moment he lost his value to them, they left him. His parents, his relatives, his friends... even his brother, me. We all shunned him as if he were the most disgusting thing in the world."
"He spent his life practically helping us, but the moment he became the problem, no one tried to help him."
"I couldn’t understand it at that time. Why did Mom and Dad suddenly hate him? Why did everyone leave him? Why was he there, resting on the bed, paralyzed and half-dead, when all he ever did in his life was become a responsible person? But to be honest, I was relieved, even happy. Everyone finally started to pay attention to me after that."
"But to him, it must’ve been so miserable that dying in that car crash would’ve been a better outcome. Everyone that he loved showed him how little he actually meant to them."
Seiji clenched his hand, causing it to turn white.
"His excellence caused envy, jealousy, and complacency. They only loved his devotion to them, but his excellence? It scared them."
He paused as his expression turned somber.
"... When I saw his hanging body at that time, I asked God."
"Why did he have to die?"
The smoke wafted in the air, mixing with thick gray mist.
"Then I got it."
Seiji clicked his tongue, shaking his head.
"Good people simply don’t live long. This world is filled with leeches that only care about the value a person provides. If you’re incapable of providing anything valuable, you’re not human."
"You’re a burden."
His tone was heavy, and every word that left his mouth dripped with uncontained mockery.
"And to me," Seiji continued quietly. "I’d rather be a leech than the person that leeches latch upon."
Namita was silent, his expression showing subtle cracks.
Seiji glanced at him, seeing his strange reaction.
But then Namita suddenly stopped, looking in another direction.
"It’s my turn."
His voice was indifferent, but even Seiji could tell it was unbearably heavy.
Seiji shifted his gaze, not understanding what he meant.
But when a young girl walked out of the mist, he immediately understood, his face changing terribly.
Seiji glanced at Namita in concern. He opened his mouth, but after seeing Namita’s expression, he closed it, clenching his teeth.
Then, he sighed, taking a step back.
"... Goodluck."
"..."
Namita didn’t answer, his gaze fixed on the young girl.
His eyes were indifferent, as if looking at an ant.
"Brother Namita, is that you?"
