Chapter 62: New Mission

But after meeting with his squad, Zold wasn’t granted respite quite yet.

When he went downstairs, Shiho was waiting for him at the reception counter, sent by Nagito to tell him that he was called to the office.

Opening the door, Zold stepped inside, seeing Nagito with his back turned while sitting.

Nagito was in deep thought, but after hearing the door open, he immediately turned around.

"Zold."

He nodded slightly, greeting him.

Zold took a seat on the couch, glancing at Nagito calmly.

"Get to it." He said, wasting no time.

Nagito nodded slightly, already used to his aversion to small talk.

"I have a mission for your squad." He paused, waiting for Zold’s reaction.

But after a brief silence, he continued calmly, but this time much more slowly.

"I want your squad to clear a Ghost Town, specifically, Tsumogui. The other three aren’t that dangerous, but Tsumogui serves as a passage to Naraku."

"You should know the importance of Naraku to Nihono."

Naraku was the most dangerous area in Nihono, but it was also the most important.

Zold didn’t answer right away, deep in thought.

Nagito waited in silence, staring at him calmly.

Then, Zold raised his head and suddenly questioned.

"Why can’t you do it yourself? It shouldn’t be a problem for you."

Nagito pursed his lips, shaking his head.

He answered honestly: "I can’t. Tsumogui is ruled by a Tier II Demon-class monster with an illusion proto-domain. Unless I’m in the middle of the Vital Spark stage, I wouldn’t be able to kill it without being affected by its domain."

"... I can’t be gone for too long." He added, spreading his hands.

Zold fell silent, understanding Nagito’s dilemma.

A Tier II Demon-class monster was equivalent to an early-stage Vital Spark Awakener.

When a monster ascended to Tier II Demon-class, instead of gaining the unique perspective of a human Vital Stage awakener, they gained a "proto-domain" skill.

Domain skills were essentially upgraded versions of skills, containing multiple effects, and extendable to a wide area.

But if that was all, then it still wouldn’t be a problem for the two of them.

After all, it was still just a proto-domain.

Proto-domains were incomplete, hence far weaker than real domain skills. The difference between the two was separated by one tier.

Only Tier III Demon-class monsters could possess a true domain skill, and even for Zold and Nagito, they were very troublesome opponents.

Yet, even if it was merely a proto-domain, Nagito’s main worry was that it was an "illusion" proto-domain.

Illusion domain skills were the most troublesome form of domain skills, especially those that came from control-type monsters.

Zold understood why Nagito didn’t want to set foot in Tsumogui.

Considering their naturally long lives as regressors, Nagito feared that it might take him some time to clear, and he wasn’t in a position to disappear all of a sudden.

Zold was quiet for a moment, considering the matter deeply.

But after a brief pause, he asked:

"Which monster is it?"

Nagito paused, then shrugged.

"... I don’t know." He chuckled, as if he said something funny.

Zold rubbed his temple, seeing his unashamed expression.

"Do you want to kill my squad members?" He asked, sighing.

Nagito smiled awkwardly. He paused, seemingly deep in thought.

Zold waited calmly.

But after a brief pause, Nagito sighed, as if he was surrendering.

"... If you can do this, I can promise that I’ll help you get your second Origin."

Hearing that, Zold fell silent.

His purpose in going to Nihono was actually to get his first Origin, which could only be obtained here.

His second Origin was in the Nileth.

Origins were important to ascend further in the Vital Spark stage. They served as the foundation for the next realm, the Blazing Life stage.

Seeing his hesitation, Nagito said seriously.

"Please."

Even with Zold’s indifferent nature, he couldn’t help but be moved.

He glanced at Nagito, seeing that the man wasn’t joking in the slightest.

"... Why?" He asked seriously, unable to guess the reason. "It can’t just be for Naraku?"

"No, there’s another reason." Nagito paused, then continued. "Tsugomui was one of Nihono’s worst ghost towns back in our previous life. It wasn’t contained until seven months later, but by that time, it was already too late."

Zold furrowed his brows but didn’t say anything.

After some consideration, he added to the conditions.

"Help me get my second and third Origins. "

Nagito had a difficult expression on his face. "It’s just a ghos—"

"You want me to bring the other members too, right?" Zold gazed at him. "I don’t know what your intention is, but you want these members to grow stronger, right? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have assigned it as a mission for the squad."

Nagito nodded, not hiding it.

"They’re vital for the nation’s survival in the future."

Zold nodded slightly, a faint smile emerging on his face. "See? Helping me get a second and third origin isn’t so unreasonable now, is it?"

Nagito fell silent, then sighed.

"Truly the One Without Equal in haggling."

Zold glanced at him.

"Shut up."

"Fine, fine..." Nagito clicked his tongue, shaking his head. "But make sure they survive, can you do that?"

Zold replied calmly.

"As long as I’m their captain, they’ll never die."

---

The next day.

Zold gathered the 13th Demon Hunter squad once more.

Everyone in the room had solemn expressions.

"You should know why I called you this time."

"Yesterday, I told you that our next mission will be even more dangerous than before..."

"We’ve been assigned a new mission."

"It’s clearing a Ghost Town."

Everyone’s expressions immediately changed.

The new manual was just uploaded last night, and it contained a lot of new, important changes in the Second Era Ending Calamity.

The one that made their scalps tingle were the emergence of Ghost Towns.

But as if not noticing their horror, Zold continued.

"The Ghost Town we’ve been assigned to clear is Tsumogui, located in Kasuragi Province. It’s dangerous, but the pay is hefty, at least... equal to retirement money. After this mission, it’s even fine for you to quit."

"No one can back out of this mission, so prepare."

Everyone had hesitant expressions, faces clouded with confusion and reluctance.

At that moment, Namita raised his hand.

"Won’t we die?" He asked calmly.

Zold shifted his gaze, then answered.

"Tsumogui is ruled by a Tier II Demon-class monster with illusion abilities. You should already be familiar with control-type monsters as demon hunters. While they’re more dangerous, they’re also much weaker than normal monsters."

"The real question is, if you’re in there, would you be able to stop yourself from killing?"

Hearing that, everyone was confused, but Zold had already walked away.

"No more questions. Just prepare, and... make sure that you completely leave behind all your regrets before the time."
