Chapter 61: Chapter 61 The Envoy Returns Again_1
If Chen Dalong were to anticipate one type of mission above all others, it undoubtedly would be those assigned by the military.
Because with military tasks, aside from money, they also granted Military Merit Points.
With Military Merit Points, he could rise in military rank, or directly purchase weapons; either choice would greatly enhance the overall strength of the Mad Dragon Security Company.
Such rewards, compared to just receiving money, were much more valuable.
After all, firearms aren’t something you can buy simply because you have money; what’s more important is having the necessary access.
The reason for Chen Dalong’s excitement, besides the above, also stemmed from the task being a large-scale joint operation.
Generally speaking, large-scale joint operations are only announced when there is a need for a significant manpower influx. Usually, the entry requirements aren’t too steep, allowing more security companies to participate.
Chen Dalong immediately moved to a nearby computer terminal, where he could view detailed information about the tasks. After displaying his ID, he opened the first task to take a closer look.
As he scanned through, he quickly discovered that this was an extermination mission.
The City Guard Department would dispatch a battalion, in conjunction with various major security companies, to carry out a large-scale clearance around Yunyang Highway and its surrounding areas.
Yunyang Highway is a crucial traffic artery that connects Yang City with Yunshang City.
Despite the total length of the highway being only 130 kilometers, it crosses the Donglin Mountain Range, making the clearance operation exceptionally challenging.
Moreover, given that it was a pivotal moment in the “Eliminate the Four Pests” campaign, the City Guard Department simply could not spare much manpower.
That was likely the reason behind announcing such a large-scale joint task.
The source of this c𝐨ntent is freeweɓnovēl.coɱ.
As he pondered this, his gaze shifted downward to continue reading.
Participation requirements: The action team must consist of at least 100 people and possess more than 10 firearms.
Such requirements were honestly not very high—it was basically the standard outfit for conducting field operations. If a team couldn’t meet these, they generally couldn’t take on even escort missions.
Yet, even these basic requirements made Chen Dalong frown.
For other companies, the hardest thing to come by—the firearms—he had enough, but the manpower…
“Sigh, if it really comes to it, I’ll just have to spend more money hiring some temporary staff,” Chen Dalong muttered to himself.
He used to be involved with the underworld, so he was somewhat familiar with the nearby gangs and groups; getting them to come over shouldn’t pose much of an issue.
However, getting ripped off was a certainty.
As Chen Dalong continued to read on, his eyes suddenly lit up. “Now, that’s a generous reward!”
All security companies participating in this operation would receive a basic reward of 1 million Huaxia currency plus 50 Military Merit Points.
That was just the basic reward, guaranteed just for participation, and more importantly, this reward was to be distributed in advance.
Chen Dalong soon realized that this was intended for those security companies that were just short of meeting the conditions.
After all, with those extra Military Merit Points paid out in advance, some security companies might meet the requirements to purchase honorary military ranks.
If not, they could at least buy 5 shotguns.
In effect, these rewards, once dispatched, were essentially lowering the threshold by half.
And this was still just the basic reward. What truly convinced Chen Dalong of the substantial bounty, however, was outlined in the next line.
“All Mutated Animals killed will yield double Military Merit Points based on their danger level.”
It should be noted that under normal circumstances, only hunting Mutated Beings listed on the danger list would yield Military Merit Points.
But now, this threshold was widened to include all Mutated Beings, with the crucial point being that all Military Merits were calculated at double value.
Furthermore, their destination this time was the Donglin Mountain Range, known for its dense population of Mutated Beings, making it an excellent place for farming Military Merits.
Of course, the prerequisite is having sufficient strength; otherwise, it would be tantamount to delivering oneself as fodder.
Chen Dalong’s heart burned with eagerness, but he did not immediately take on the mission.
Because Lord Parrot had previously assigned him an escort task, and now it had changed to a purge mission, he was unclear whether killing Mutated Beings in the Donglin Mountain Range would breach any taboos.
…
After noting the details of the task, he left the Security Association and returned to his residence.
Being a local of Yang City, he owned a self-built house in the old district that occupied a sizeable plot of land.
After returning home, he began to wait.
Lord Parrot had told him earlier that the Raven Envoy was too conspicuous during the day and only appeared at night, so he had no choice but to wait.
And wait he did, for a full four hours.
After he had finished his dinner and the sky had turned completely dark, he finally saw the bird he had been waiting for.
A Mutated Black Crow, half a meter tall, landed in front of his window.
It was evident that this was a subordinate of the Raven Envoy.
He immediately approached the window, opened it to allow the black crow to fly in, and said respectfully, “Raven Envoy, I have a report to make about tomorrow’s mission…”
Chen Dalong recounted the mission he saw at the Security Association and his thoughts on it.
However, the more he spoke, the more he felt something was amiss; the black crow before him was looking around, seemingly not listening to him at all.
Suddenly, the crow shifted its gaze, then flapped its wings and flew straight into the kitchen.
When Chen Dalong followed, he found it pecking at the fruit in the fruit basket.
“Raven Envoy!” Chen Dalong tried calling out, but there was no response.
At this point, Chen Dalong gradually realized—these Mutated Black Crows.
They couldn’t understand human speech!!!
But when he thought about it, this made sense. The intelligence of Mutated Beings was only slightly higher than that of their normal counterparts. Even if they could understand human language, normal communication would be difficult.
Only the messengers of the Dragon Lord could communicate properly.
But now… he felt a headache coming on.
“That’s not right! The Raven Envoy must be aware that its subordinates can’t communicate with me; why then did it send one over?”
Chen Dalong approached, looking it over from head to toe, and finally noticed a small bamboo tube attached to the crow’s leg.
He removed the small bamboo tube and, to his astonishment, found a small note inside. This scene, often seen in TV dramas, left him feeling somewhat dazed.
“Is this a case of using a crow to carry messages?” Chen Dalong murmured to himself as he unfolded the note and started reading.
The content was simple, just one brief line of text: Write down the contents of your report on paper!
Without a word, Chen Dalong immediately went to his study and began to write furiously.
Soon after, he stuffed the note back into the bamboo tube.
The black crow had eaten most of the fruit by now and, seeing Chen Dalong insert the note back into the tube, seemed reluctant to stop but did so.
Then, it flew back out through the window that had been left open, merging with the night and vanishing in the blink of an eye.
Within moments, the black crow returned. Chen Dalong quickly opened the bamboo tube and pulled out the note inside.
Scrawled on it were three lopsided characters: Follow me!
