Ghost Compendium-Chapter 440 - 383: The Nominal Existence of the Demon Extermination Association (Part 2)
They kept muttering, "Ghost, ghost, ghost... The country is so big, where do we start looking for a Fierce Ghost that might not even exist? It would be better to focus on solving the problem of being Forgotten first, and once we make the public aware of our existence again, then we can think about the real culprit..."
The two grumbling people bumped right into Kelly, Wu Liang, and their companions who were just about to knock on the door.
Seeing familiar faces, they knew that Kelly had returned with material from outside and hurriedly greeted her, asking, "Sister Kelly, how many people did you find this time? Most of the passersby at headquarters have nearly forgotten us, and if we have some new passersby to help with research, we can surely achieve—"
Before they could finish their excited words, they noticed an unfamiliar Eastern face standing behind Kelly.
This made the two frown.
Ever since the Demon Extermination Association was Forgotten by the public, even their original headquarters was forcibly reclaimed by the government. They didn’t even have the Power to explain, as who would believe a stranger saying a building was their office?
Since then, the only people they could trust were each other.
The only unfamiliar faces that could appear in this secret base’s temporary headquarters were the passersby brought back by Kelly and others.
These researchers needed these passersby, who could remember a little about the Demon Extermination Association, to unravel the mystery of being Forgotten.
But no matter what, passersby shouldn’t be brought to the doorstep of this office!
"Sister Kelly, this person is..."
"Don’t mind me, I’m just a traveler here to point out how foolish you all are, especially after entering the headquarters and realizing the Demon Extermination Association’s state was worse than I imagined. Perhaps all the smart people have been Forgotten, leaving only a bunch of idiots."
Wu Liang shrugged and spoke bluntly.
His words were so harsh that they could make one angry, at least the veins on the foreheads of the two researchers were already bulging.
But before they could retort, they were shocked by what Wu Liang said next.
"Oh, not all idiots, at least there’s one in this room with a brain, able to realize that the crisis comes from a Nation-Destroying Level Fierce Ghost."
Upon hearing this, the two researchers were completely dumbfounded.
Nation-Destroying Level Fierce Ghost, these words echoed endlessly in their ears.
Without paying attention to their subsequent reactions, Wu Liang directly pushed the door open and walked into the office.
Inside, there were only four things—a burly man, an office desk, a computer, and paper documents stacked almost to the ceiling.
The burly man was rummaging through the mountain of documents, cursing without looking back when he heard someone enter, "I said get out, don’t you understand..."
Suddenly, he seemed to realize something and immediately stopped his rummaging.
He stood up straight, turned around, looked at the person who came in, and raised an eyebrow to ask, "Who are you? Do we have Eastern faces in the Demon Extermination Association? Or have we started to forget our own people?"
"Not bad, at least you know how to question yourself," Wu Liang smiled and said.
Then he recounted how he introduced himself in front of Kelly and others earlier.
To prevent this burly man from disbelieving, Kelly herself also walked in to give her perspective.
But upon seeing this, the burly man just raised his hand to stop her.
After a moment of contemplation, he sighed and said, "I knew a job this heavy shouldn’t be handled by just me alone. Turns out, I had a superior all along, I’m indeed not cut out to be a leader."
Right after making this seemingly teasing remark, the burly man’s expression turned serious.
He earnestly asked Wu Liang, "According to Mr. Shadow’s observation, what problems do we still have in the Demon Extermination Association?"
Wu Liang was slightly surprised at how quickly the other person accepted his embodiment.
But he continued, "You are practically a hollow shell now, not just because the outside world is Forgetting, but it’s decreasing internally as well, for example — you are currently murdering your own comrades."
Upon hearing this, Kelly immediately showed a look of disbelief.
Wasn’t it supposed to be the Fierce Ghost behind all this? Why is it now the Demon Extermination Association killing its own comrades?
Unbeknownst to Kelly, as soon as Wu Liang finished speaking, the burly leader couldn’t help but tightly grasp Wu Liang’s hand.
He exclaimed emotionally, "Finally, someone understands me! I know where the issue you wanted to point out lies!"
"Those passersby who have been researched and then Forgotten about the Demon Extermination Association!"
Both men spoke in unison.
At this point, the situation was getting intriguing, Kelly couldn’t keep up with her superior and Wu Liang’s thought process at all.
What’s wrong with those passersby?
We didn’t harm them, and the research was conducted without harming their bodies and minds.
Once they Forget the Demon Extermination Association again, the headquarters would send them back to society.
What’s wrong with that?
Seeing the woman’s bewildered expression, Wu Liang explained, "As soon as I entered the Demon Extermination Association and saw researchers using instruments to probe passersby’s cerebral cortex, I knew something was off — a portion of these people aren’t passersby at all!"
"Not passersby? But I personally brought them back from the street!" Kelly said, a bit puzzled.
She didn’t believe she would make such a low-level mistake.
Before capturing anyone, Kelly always investigated their identity thoroughly and even now she could name every person she brought back.
But Wu Liang shook his head and said, "That’s where the terrifying part lies, you don’t even realize that you’re capturing comrades from the Demon Extermination Association, proving they have been nearly Forgotten."
Yes! A portion of those passersby are actually comrades of the Demon Extermination Association!
But both sides have experienced memory loss, so they believe they are innocents suddenly trapped in this unfamiliar place, while Kelly believes they are valuable passersby.
When they are released back into society by the Demon Extermination Association, it’s when they are truly Forgotten.
Kelly thought she was letting them go, but in reality, she completely overlooked that part of the people had already vanished from the world.
This Nation-Destroying Level Fierce Ghost’s ability is so silently insidious!
Wu Liang felt a surge of sadness for this country, they had the misfortune of encountering such a disaster.
He realized something was wrong when he passed by a few passersby who were ready to be released back into society and noticed that they were all Symbionts.
Driven by curiosity, he casually flipped through the [Ghost Compendium] to see what Fierce Ghosts they harbored.
To his surprise, the archives documented that these Fierce Ghosts ultimately formed symbiosis with the Awakened of the Demon Extermination Association.
This led to the current deduction — the Demon Extermination Association’s numbers are quietly diminishing!
And that burly man seemed already aware of this aspect and was probing when he asked for Wu Liang’s insight.
Now, it looks like he should have earned the other party’s trust.
The initial flattery was just a pleasantry, now they truly see him as a helper sent from Huaxia.
The burly man earnestly said, "Friend from Huaxia, let me introduce myself, I’m William, my Awakened Ability allows me to think about events within a closed room at ten times the speed."
This action directly frightened Kelly and the two dissatisfied researchers who pushed the door open.
This could be considered a very confidential thing for the Demon Extermination Association, and where is it rational to disclose one’s Awakened Ability upon first meeting?
But who would have thought William flashed a smile as if it was natural, "One must learn to accept one’s inadequacy... We can’t handle this event anymore, just as that person said earlier—the Demon Extermination Association is already a hollow shell."
Then he looked at Wu Liang with expectant eyes.
He could sense that this young man with the Eastern face was either unaffected by this Forgetting due to some special ability or he was strong enough to resist the Nation-Destroying Level Fierce Ghost’s powers.
Either way, it must be more effective than letting the Demon Extermination Association muddle through this issue.
Wu Liang indeed rather appreciated this William who possessed such self-awareness.
Because very few people realize their inadequacies, or after realizing them can truly accept them from the bottom of their hearts.
The term inadequacy here held no derogatory meaning, it was merely a judgment about the situation.
"This matter, actually, is quite simple."
"Furthermore, it requires you guys to break through yourselves."
"It just depends on how thick-skinned you all are..."
