Chapter 76: To the Holy land [1]

Brandon felt a slight shift in pressure as the private jet began to lower its altitude, gliding seamlessly through the air.

Looking outside the window, Brandon saw the ivory-white city structures, towering spires, and lush golden fields bathed in the glow of the afternoon sun.

The Holy Land.

The very heart of the Church of Rheanne.

Even from up here, he could see the grand roads leading toward the capital... a city built upon divine doctrine, where faith and power intertwined in absolute harmony.

At the city’s center, stood the Grand Cathedral of Rheanne.

A massive structure with its spires almost reaching the skies, while holy banners embroidered in gold fluttered gently in the wind.

He narrowed his eyes slightly as the aircraft began its final descent onto the private runway reserved for esteemed guests of the Holy Church.

Several robed figures, the church officials dressed in ceremonial attire stood along the edge of the runway.

Behind them, a convoy of sleek, black vehicles was already lined up, prepared for their arrival.

Unlike the Holy Church’s traditional aesthetic, these vehicles were modern, militarized, and armored, their exteriors reinforced with ether-infused plating.

The Church of Rheanne may have been a religious organization, but it was also a force of absolute power.

As the aircraft’s doors opened, the assistant from earlier, the woman with the glasses was already waiting at the base of the stairs.

Charlotte walked down first and the moment her boots touched the ground, the church officials instinctively bowed.

Brandon followed, stepping down beside her, and he felt every pair of eyes land on him.

The robed figures did not bow to him like they did for Charlotte.

Instead, they simply stared.

The assistant adjusted her glasses before speaking.

"Lady Charlotte. Lord Kael." She gave a slight nod.

"Your transport awaits. Please, follow me."

Brandon and Charlotte were led toward the sleek black vehicle parked at the forefront of the convoy.

The assistant personally opened the door for them.

Charlotte entered first, settling comfortably into the luxurious leather seats in the back.

Brandon followed, stepping in beside her.

The assistant then closed the door before making her way to the front passenger seat.

The driver, a well-dressed woman, gave a brief nod before starting the car.

The convoy began to move.

As the car moved through the streets, Brandon looked at the surroundings through the windows.

The streets were pristine, lined with glowing runes that provided soft illumination even in broad daylight.

Instead of modern streetlights, floating orbs of light hovered in the air, shifting colors in response to the time of day.

Pedestrians walked around and most of them were dressed in ceremonial robes that denoted their rank within the church.

Brandon noticed how women dominated the cityscape.

Every guard, every high-ranking official, every authoritative figure he saw... they were all women.

Inside the car, Charlotte remained silent.

Her gaze was focused on the window, seemingly lost in thought.

Brandon didn’t disturb her.

As the convoy neared the cathedral’s entrance, the sheer scale of the structure became overwhelming.

The Grand Cathedral of Rheanne was an architectural impossibility with its spires reaching the skies.

Massive stained-glass windows depicted scenes of legendary female warriors, priestesses, and saints.

At the very center of the gate there is a massive engraving of the Goddess Rheanne herself.

As the convoy came to a stop, a group of high-ranking clergywomen in ceremonial armor stood waiting.

The assistant quickly stepped out of the car and opened the door for Brandon and Charlotte.

Both of them gently stepped out of the car and a woman stepped forward and spoke "Welcome to the Cathedral of Goddess Rheanne."

Charlotte walked past her and Brandon quickly followed as they continued their way to the Cathedral.

The assistant hurriedly caught up with them but Charlotte raised her hand "You stay here."

Hearing the order, she bowed her head "Yes, Lady Charlotte."

She then glanced at Brandon for a second and continued walking.

...

As Brandon entered the Cathedral, he was amazed by the sheer scale of the architecture.

Suddenly, his eyes narrowed ’Huh? What is this feeling?’

A feeling as if he is standing in front of something greater.

He felt a sudden flutter in his heart as if being oppressed slightly. ’Hm? The Goddess is real? Why do I feel different.. entering this place?’

’Or the church using some sort of artifact or machine to affect mental strength and that’s make me feel like this way?’

His gaze squinted in thought and he looked at Charlotte "Are you feeling anything?"

Charlotte was surprised as this is the first time he spoke to her since they started the trip.

She stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him "What feeling?"

With a soft sigh, he muttered "Like... feeling inferior, as if I am standing before a powerful entity."

Hm? Powerful Entity? Charlotte tilted her head slightly "There is no powerful entity other than me here."

-_- Brandon sighed in his heart ’Then I guess, it must be some kind of artifact... affecting mental strength.’

’Maybe it doesn’t work on strong people like Charlotte but works on weak people like me.’

’Seems like they want to make everyone feel overwhelming when they enter the church.’

With a shake of his head, he muttered "Never mind."

With that, they continued their walk.

Priestesses in flowing white robes moved through the hall with their heads bowed as they carried out their duties.

Guardians clad in gold and white battle armor stood at key points, their hands resting on the hilts of blades.

Suddenly one of the priestesses looked at him and hurriedly walked to him, her face scrunched in disgust.

"A man... walking into this holy place?"

"Disgusting..."

Brandon just stayed silent ’That was quick...’

He expected some form of hostility, but this level of open hatred was something else.

Other priestesses, guardians, and clergy members turned their heads to look at the confrontation.

"This is a place of worship. A holy sanctuary dedicated to the Goddess Rheanne. A man’s presence here is..."

Charlotte raised her voice slightly "Got any problems?"

Her gaze narrowed slightly as faint energy rippled out from her "You will not speak to him that way."

The priestess visibly swallowed, but her clenched fists and trembling lips betrayed her barely contained anger.

Still, she did not dare to challenge Charlotte directly.

Instead, she redirected her rage and her gaze burned with anger as she turned back to Brandon.

"He is an abomination before the Goddess," she hissed.

"A disgrace to the natural order. He defiles this sacred ground with his very existence!"

Brandon felt an odd sense of déjà vu.

He had heard similar words before... from those who believed only women were meant to wield ether.

Charlotte raised her leg and kicked the priestess’s knee lightly.

"Ah!" The priestess suddenly tumbled forward as she lost her balance and knelt on the floor.

Charlotte raised her leg and pressed her boot down against the back of the woman’s head, forcing her face into the cold marble floor of the cathedral.

The impact echoed through the chamber, sending a shudder through the watching priestesses and clergy members.

Adjusting her glove, Charlotta twisted her foot as the priestess struggled, gasping for breath.

"Apologize..."

Seeing this, the guards there hurriedly rushed to them but looking at Charlotte, they just stood there without taking any action.

The priestess beneath her foot clawed at the floor and her breathing ragged as she tried to push herself up.

But Charlotte pressed down harder, her boot grinding against the woman’s skull.

The priestess’s lips parted and her voice was weak and muffled against the cold stone.

"I... I will never—"

CRACK.

Charlotte shifted her weight slightly, and a sharp, wet gasp escaped her lips as a fresh wave of pain rippled through her skull.

"Guaarghh!"

Her nails scraped desperately against the floor and her body tensed as she tried to endure.

A cold glint passed through Charlotte’s eyes "Do you know what I do to people who disrespect my property?"

Huh?

Hearing this, Brandon was dumbfounded...

What did she say just now?

Property?

’When did I became her property?’

He looked around at the reaction of the people and some were obviously displeased looking at him.

The Priestess nails dug into the marble "I.. I am sorry..."

Charlotte pressed her foot even harder "Louder."

The Priestess’s body shook as tears spilled down her cheek "I am sorry..."

Charlotte retracted her leg and the Priestess instantly fell on the floor, gasping for air.

Then she looked at Brandon and gave a nod, "Let’s move...."

Brandon glimpsed at the woman for a moment before following Charlotte.
